  • Hybrid rocket shows interesting characteristics of complicated mixing layers developed by interactions between turbulent oxidizer flow and mass flow from surface due to fuel vaporization. In this study, compressible LES with a ring structure attached at the entrance of the combustor are performed. According to one recent report, adding a ring structure in the middle of the combustor helps increasing regression rate. From the numerical results, it is seen that vortex structures near the wall becomes stronger due to the interaction with surface mass injection, and the local heat flux increases due to the vortices. This phenomenon is obviously related to the generation of dimple structures which are seen in the number of experiments. Also, the ring structure at the entrance induces strong vortex flow which enhances heat transfer to the wall surface and mixing between fuel and oxidizer as well as reaction efficiency.

  • In the present study, the detailed flow structure and heat transfer characteristics in the newly-designed heat transfer surface geometry were investigated. The surface geometry proposed in the present study is a traditional dimple structure combining with a protrusion inside the dimple, which is named a protrusion-in-dimple in this study. The basic idea underlying the present surface geometry is to enhance the flow mixing and the corresponding heat transfer in the flow re-circulating region generated by a conventional dimple cavity. The present study was performed by the direct numerical simulation at a Reynolds number of 2800 based on mean velocity and channel height and Prandtl number of 0.71. Three different protrusion heights for protrusion-in-dimples were considered as the main design parameter of the present study. The calculated pressure drop and heat transfer capacity were assessed in terms of the Fanning friction factor and Colburn j factor. The overall performances estimated in terms of the volume and area goodness factor for protrusion-in-dimple cases were higher than the conventional dimple case.

  • With the world's fast expanding energy usage comes a slew of new issues. Because one-third of energy is lost in overcoming friction, tremendous effort is being directed into minimizing friction. Surface texturing is the latest surface treatment technology that uses grooves and dimples on the friction surface of the machine to significantly reduce friction and improve wear resistance. Despite the fact that many studies on this issue have been conducted, most of them focused on parallel surfaces, with relatively few cases of converging films, as in most sliding bearings. This study investigated the lubrication performance of surface-textured inclined slider bearings. We analyzed the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations using a commercial computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. The results show the pressure and velocity distributions and the lubrication performance according to the number and orientation of rectangular dimples. Partial texturing somewhat improves the lubrication performance of inclined slider bearings. The number of dimples with the maximum load-carrying capacity (LCC) and minimum friction is determined. When the major axis of the dimple is arranged in the sliding direction, the LCC and friction reduction are maximized. However, full texturing significantly reduces the LCC of the slider bearing and increases the flow rate. The results have the potential to improve the lubrication performance of various sliding bearings, but further research is required.

  • To investigate the effect of implant types and bone resorption on the fracture characteristics. 4 types of Osstem$^{(R)}$Implant were chosen and classified into external parallel, internal parallel, external taper, internal taper groups. Finite elements analysis was conducted with ANSYS Multi Physics software. Fatigue fracture test was performed by connecting the mold to the dynamic load fatigue testing machine with maximum load of 600N and minimum load of 60N. The entire fatigue test was performed with frequency of 14Hz and fractured specimens were observed with Hitachi S-3000 H scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. In the fatigue test of 2 mm exposed implants group, Tapered type and external connected type had higher fatigue life. 2. In the fatigue test of 4 mm exposed implants group, Parallel type and external connected types had higher fatigue life. 3. The fracture patterns of all 4 mm exposed implant system appeared transversely near the dead space of the fixture. With a exposing level of 2 mm, all internally connected implant systems were fractured transversely at the platform of fixture facing the abutment. but externally connected ones were fractured at the fillet of abutment body and hexa of fixture or near the dead space of the fixture. 4. Many fatigue striations were observed near the crack initiation and propagation sites. The cleavage with facet or dimple fractures appeared at the final fracture sites. 5. Effective stress of buccal site with compressive stress is higher than that of lingual site with tensile stress, and effective stress acting on the fixture is higher than that of the abutment screw. Also, maximum effective stress acting on the parallel type fixtures is higher. It is careful to use the internal type implant system in posterior area.
