디지털 혹은 돼지털?

  • 'Humamnism thru Digital' 디지털 세상이 목표로 하는 이상향의 모습이다. 그런데, 누구에게나 그런 건 아닌가보다. 얼마전 가벼운 웃음을 짓게 하며 인구에 회자된 하나의 TV광고를 떠올려보자. 광고는 저녁 무렵 퇴근 길에 남편이 시장에 들러 생선가게 앞에서 생선을 고르는 장면으로 시작한다. 이것 저것 고르다가 아내에게 핸드폰으로 전화해 생선을 보여주고 선택하게 한다. 옆에서 이를 지켜보던 생선가게 주인할머니가 의아스런 눈빛으로 손님을 바라보자, 손님이 설명해준다. '디지털 세상이잖아요' 그에 할머니, 갸우뚱하며 한마디 던지는데, "돼지털?" 이란다. 제대로 알아듣지 못한 것이다. 젊은 남편에게는 '디지털' 인 것이 할머니에겐 '돼지털'일 뿐이다. 모든 이에게 디지털은 아닌 것이다.

Nonlinear Filter-based Adaptive Shoot Elimination Method (비선형 필터 기반의 적응적 슈트제거 방법)

  • The current display systems including TVs are going digital and large-sized, and high visual quality of those systems becomes a very important selling point in the current display system market. Thus, various researches have been carried out for enhancing the visual quality of digital display systems. One of the important digital image(or video) enhancement techniques is sharpness enhancement, and it is generally based on a transient improvement technique that reduces the edge transition time. However, this technique often generates overshoot and undershoot, which cause undesirable pixel-level changes around the transient improved edge. In this paper, we propose a new nonlinear filter-based adaptive shoot elimination method for effectively suppressing the overshoot and undershoot that occur in the transient improvement, so that we can obtain visually sharper and clearer digital images(or videos). The proposed method uses two orthogonal directional min/max nonlinear filters with an adaptive shoot elimination scheme in order to effectively suppress the visually sensitive overshoot and undershoot. Experimental results show that the proposed method suppresses the overshoot and undershoot almost perfectly while maintaining the effect of the transient improvement. The applications of the proposed method include digital TVs, digital monitors, digital cameras/camcoders, portable media players(PMP), etc.

Compressed-sensing (CS)-based Image Deblurring Scheme with a Total Variation Regularization Penalty for Improving Image Characteristics in Digital Tomosynthesis (DTS) (디지털 단층합성 X-선 영상의 화질개선을 위한 TV-압축센싱 기반 영상복원기법 연구)

  • In this work, we considered a compressed-sensing (CS)-based image deblurring scheme with a total-variation (TV) regularization penalty for improving image characteristics in digital tomosynthesis (DTS). We implemented the proposed image deblurring algorithm and performed a systematic simulation to demonstrate its viability. We also performed an experiment by using a table-top setup which consists of an x-ray tube operated at $90kV_p$, 6 mAs and a CMOS-type flat-panel detector having a $198-{\mu}m$ pixel resolution. In the both simulation and experiment, 51 projection images were taken with a tomographic angle range of ${\theta}=60^{\circ}$ and an angle step of ${\Delta}{\theta}=1.2^{\circ}$ and then deblurred by using the proposed deblurring algorithm before performing the common filtered-backprojection (FBP)-based DTS reconstruction. According to our results, the image sharpness of the recovered x-ray images and the reconstructed DTS images were significantly improved and the cross-plane spatial resolution in DTS was also improved by a factor of about 1.4. Thus the proposed deblurring scheme appears to be effective for the blurring problems in both conventional radiography and DTS and is applicable to improve the present image characteristics.

A study of the Factors Influencing on the Convergent TV Viewing Experiences (디지털 컨버전스 환경에서 융합적 TV시청경험에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • This study is to find out what are the factors influencing upon the convergent TV viewing experiences. Socio-demographic variables are identified as the most influential ones. Viewing modes are more influential than the media utilization factors. Comparing the detailed dimensions of TV viewing experiences, time and content selectivity are more influenced by TV viewing modes, while sociability and interactivity are more affected by socio-demographic variables relatively. This study has academic significance in that it is an exploratory empirical study on factors influencing on the TV viewing experiences.

  • The emergence of cable TV, satellite broadcasting and IPTV provides viewers with a variety of TV programs. However, viewers' desire for watching their favorite TV program at convenient time has increased because of insufficient spare time. As an increase in smart phone market has accelerated an entry into "the age of smart network media" since 2009, mobile media suggests services connected to other digital devices. Recently, there has been growing interest in TV controling system of smart phone. Therefore, the present study aims to provide an concept of the smart phone application which recommends contents of TV program by analyzing personal watching pattern. To suggest detailed direction of the interaction and UI design, we analyzed previous research and examples of TV controlling applications and products. In addition, public opinion survey was carried out to rationalize this study and suggest suitable UI structure.

  • In this paper, we propose technical and structural solutions for various problems in two-way digital communication services in CATV networks by actual field tests. The two-way digital communication services include VOD, video conferencing, distance learning, interactive game and internet service. We investigate the quality of T -1 level 0.544 Mbps) upstream digital signal while varying the number of subscribers in three different cells in accordance with ITU-T G.821. Based on this investigation, several ways to cope with the problems identified are suggested.

  • The birth of a new mobile medium of communication In 2005, the DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting), was celebrated for the mobile and asynchronous personal medium. But now, the most film- & video-channels of this epoch-making medium of communication combine with the rebroadcasting of long play film for cinema oder TV series. The purpose of this study is thus to point out the disharmony between new mobile medium and the old, recycled contents and to propose as an alternative content the digital shortshort moving images.

  • The public concept of digital broadcasting is all about anytime, anywhere and anyone. It implies that the viewing rights of digital broadcasting have to be blessed with anyone, in anywhere and at anytime. Here anyone connotes the notion included visually and hearing impaired viewers as well as the non-disabled. Considering the current circumstance, which is a milestone of digital switchover by 2012, it seems destitute of the accessibility for the disabled. Hence this study is to manage the embodiment of broadcasting accessibility in digital interactive services originated from W3C for impaired viewers in order to cotton to the unlimited contents on digital television.

A Study on Character Storytelling for Children's TV Animation Based on Viewing Rate (시청률에 기반한 유아용 TV 애니메이션 캐릭터 스토리텔링 분석)

  • Since Korea started producing original animations targeting children, market of character for children has been led by TV animation with continuous broadcasting and OSMU. With a successful fondation in animation toy industry, its market is expanding to film industry, at the same time, brings positive effect for benefit of domestic animation. Therefore, this study researched viewing rate of children's TV animation and analyzed character storytelling to help foster and grow the direction of future animation characters. For the analysis, I selected 20 animations with high viewing rate and analyzed the storytelling of 95 characters based on their roles. The results of this study are as follows: in children's animation appeared various types of characters helping each other to make the viewer learn socializing. In addition, character's external setting varied depending on its role. Moreover, in the characters' internal setting, the most frequently appeared keyword was leadership, however, their personality keyword varied depending on the role.
