Forecasting the Demand for the Substitution of Next Generations of Digital TV Using Choice-Based Diffusion Models (선택기반확산모형을 이용한 디지털 TV 수요예측)

  • The methodological framework proposed in this paper addresses the strength of the applied Bass model by Mahajan and Muller(1996) that it reflects the substitution of next generations among products. Also this paper is to estimate and analyze the forecast of demand for products that do not exist in the marketplace. We forecast the sales of digital TV using estimated market share and data obtained by the face to face Interview. In this research, we use two methods to analyze the demand for Digital TV that are the forecasting the Demand for the Substitution and binary logit analysis. The logit analysis is to estimate the decisive factor of purchasing digital TV. The decisive factors are composed of purchasing plan, region, gender, TV price, contents, coverage, income, age, and TV program. We apply the model to South Korea's market for digital TV. The results show that (1) Income, region and TV price play a prominent part which is the decisive factor of purchasing digital TV. (2) We forecaste the demand of digital TV that will be demanded about 18 millions TVs in 2015

A Content-based TV Program Recommender (TV프로그램을 위한 내용기반 추천 시스템)

  • The rapid increase of the number of channels makes it hard to find wanted programs from TV. In recent years, the number of channels come up to hundreds with the digital TV arrival. So, it will drive us to the new way of watching TV. In this paper, we introduce a recommendation system for TV programs to overcome this difficulty. We model user profiles and design each module of the system, considering TV environment. Our system gathers basic information from people manually and then updates user profiles automatically by tracking viewing and usage history. As a result, our system recommends daily TV programs based on the changing interest of users. In this paper, we address the problems and solutions by describing our system and the experiment.

Audio Format Comparative Study and Suggestion for Next Generation DTV (차세대 디지털 TV 방송을 위한 오디오 규격 비교 분석 및 제언)

  • With commencing trial 3D digital broadcasting, the studies on next generation digital broadcasting technology for coming UHDTV era is being actively progressing. In this paper, I propose surround audio formats for next-generation digital TV broadcasting, along with comparative study of major surround audio formats in use or under development. I did comparative study on current major competing surround formats such as Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA, along with NHK proposed 22.2 channel surround format for UHDTV system. Upon this comparative study and our housing situation consideration, I propose lossy compression 3D surround 7.1 channel surround format along with loosless 2.0 and 4.0 hi-fi format as next generation digital TV broadcasting standard. In lieu with this, I also propose transmitting binaural 2 channel audio data as sub-audio. It will give holographic sound experience when properly processed with individual HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) with headphone. The table for data rate of each proposed audio format is also presented.

Efficient Estimation Method of Reception Rate for Terrestrial Digital TV Broadcasting Service (효율적인 지상파 디지털 TV방송 수신율 산정방안)

  • In this paper, a reception rate of terrestrial digital TV broadcasting service is analyzed and a novel method which can estimate the broadcasting coverage rate more objectively and reliably than the existing method is proposed. Previous method measures the reception rate by means of electric field intensity measurement or subjective video quality assessment. Because of limited measuring points, it inherently has measurement error and cannot consider the viewer's receiving conditions in real-time. In order to consider the viewer's population and receiving environment, morphology which characterizes the viewer's receiving environment is extracted using household census data of National Statistical Office and the land cover map of Ministry of Environment. Using the extracted geographical morphology, the reception rate of terrestrial digital TV broadcasting service is calculated with Spectrum Management Intelligence System (SMIs). Proposed method can calculate the reception rate more objectively and reliably than the existing methods because it fully considers the viewer's receiving environments in real-time.

A Study on the Prediction of Electric Field Strength for Terrestrial TV Broadcasting by Digital Adoption (지상파 TV 방송의 디지털 전환에 따른 전계 강도 예측에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose a calculation methodology of the service distance to assure the satisfactory quality of service for analogue and digital TV receivers. Using the field strength formulation for TV receiver based upon Rec. ITU-R P.1546, computational results are presented and discussed for both systems, and some important factors are reviewed in terms of the equivalent level of service, which must be kept due to ATV to DTV conversion. The presented method provides the predicted values of field strength at receiver areas to check whether transmission quality can be satisfied or not, and it can be also used for obtaining the protection ratio or separated distance from co-channel or adjacent interference signal.

  • Emerging three-dimensional television (3DTV) as a new IT product shows a possibility that television is not for just watching broadcasting, but an attractive tool for applying it to our real life. Three dimensional television is generally more effective and attractive than two-dimensional television (2DTV). But it still needs continuous technological improvement to solve its inherent limitations until many customers decide to purchase 3DTVs without hesitation. Innovative products like 3DTV encounter a quality problem leading purchase decision by customers. Quality is regarded as one of the most important factors affecting customers to adopt and use the product. Furthermore, measuring quality effectively is considerable for the 3DTV research. In this paper, we suggest the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) method for evaluating 3DTVs in a view of quality. We describe quality criteria affecting the 3DTV selection through a literature survey and develope an analytical method for measuring quality. We classify the quality of 3DTV into four types and suggest a concept of the quality ratio as a measurement criteria instead of the quality gap. Though a numerical example, we show how priorities of 3DTV with versatile manufacturers is computed.

A Study on LED Motion Graphic Formative Image on TV Music Show (TV음악쇼 LED모션그래픽 조형이미지 구성 연구)

  • This study analysed motion graphic formative image composition of TV LED backdrop to be used as background display for performers such as singers appeared on TV music show. Motion graphic LED images are comprised of various plane figures, and backdrop's design function as background screen has a goal to convey synesthesia and sensibility of visual elements. And this analyse classified sensibility concept about color, motion direction and speed to be elements of transmitting sensibility. As the analyse of graphic form among transmitting sensibility elements, this classified form type into its' applied elements, and studied how these elements' motion pattern and arrangement could be placed and replaced at song's four step composition, intro, verse, bridge, chorus part, and also characterized differences of backdrop design for male and female performers. As a case study, it included terrestial broadcasting TV song ranking shows targeted at teenagers. Because they carried out various motion design utilizations. Finally, this reasoned out mainly designing form type, its' applied elements, motion pattern and its' arrangements type division according to the song developing four steps.

Storing TV-Anytime Metadata using Databases (데이터베이스를 이용한 TV-Anytime 메타데이타의 저장)

  • TV-Anytime은 차세대 디지털 방송을 위한 메타데이타 표준으로 XML 형식으로 기술된다. TV-Anytime 메타데이타는 그 특성상 단일 스키마를 따르며, 규모에 있어서 대용량이다. 그러므로 데이터베이스를 이용하여 메타데이타를 저장하고 관리할 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서는 대용량 TV-Anytime 메타데이타를, 데이터베이스를 이용하여 저장하고 관리하기 위한 저장 엔진을 제안한다. 단일 스키마에 기반을 두고 있다는 점을 고려하여 TV-Anytime 메타데이타의 구조에 적합한 데이터베이스 스키마를 설계하였다. 문서 재조합을 효율적으로 할 수 있도록 노드 번호를 위하여 Dewey 방법을 사용하였으며, 조인 연산을 줄이기 위하여 Path 테이블을 두었다. 저장 엔진은 TV-Anytime 관리 시스템에서 XQuery 엔진과 같은 XML 질의처리기와 연동될 수 있다.

Smart TV 기술 및 표준화 동향

  • 인터넷의 발달과 웹 어플리케이션의 활성화로 Internet Connected TV가 차지하는 비율이 점차 늘어나고, 스마트폰의 선풍적인 인기와 시장의 영향으로 디지털 TV에도 Smart TV의 바람이 불고 있다. Smart TV의 기술을 수신기 관점에서 살펴보았을 때, 방송과 웹이라는 두 가지 분야의 기술과 표준을 생각할 수 있다. 이에, 방송 분야에 대해서는 북미 ATSC 2.0, ATSC PT-3, 유럽 HbbTV 와 DVB-IPTV, 그리고 한국의 OHTV를 표준 관점에서 서비스 및 기술을 서로 비교하고, 다음으로 웹에 대한 기술과 표준화는 W3C의 HTML5, Web and TV 그리고 MPEG에서의 DASH를 살펴보기로 한다.
