  • Digital shipbuilding is a technology to reduce the total cost and lead time inevitably made by reschedule and rework in a shipyard. Strategic planning should be undertaken in order to have an effect on the applicable field. We aim at planning a strategy of digital shipbuilding technology by analysis of production planning workflow in this paper. In the basis of BPR methodology, the as-is business process is analyzed to build an workflow model, and derive the bottleneck business process. We dig into the inside details of the process to illustrate an diagram of the core improvement opportunities, and perform process simulation not only to create the application scenarios but also to expect the main effects. The application strategy will make a basic sketch to save both the production cost and time for high quality products in the shipyards.

• Recently, world leading companies on manufacturing field are trying to adopt a PLM methodology, which is a new production paradigm, for a survival and strengthening the competitiveness. Some projects for a digital shipyard including a methodology of a digital simulation framework are going on by Seoul national university and Samsung heavy industry. A Database methodology for a scheduling data, an interfacing methodology for a simulation input and output, and a synchronized simulation related methodology are required for enhancing the value of the digital simulation for shipbuilding. In this paper, such a methodologies and a related case study for a fabrication factory and an assembly factory are presented.

  • Digital-ship is the next-generation ship with an one-man bridge system which consists of INS(Intelligent Navigation System), AIS(Automatic Identification System), and IMIT(Integrated Maritime Information Technology). INS implements the functions is related of the ship's navigation, and supports in the digital GIS environments optimal route planning, stranding and a collision avoidance among the ship, an economic navigation, and an integrated control of ship's engine. AIS prevents the ship's collision by means of transmitting periodically the own ship's information to the other ship or the shore control center. IMIT systems supports the integrated fiat-form in ships, the communication between a ship and a control center of the land using the INMARSAT, OrbComm, Ocean Observation Satellite, and etc. The satellite communication in ships can monitor the ship at an earth control renter. This paper deals with the method for system implementation of digital-ship and the detailed sub-system.

  • By the emerging information technologies, the environment and technology of manufacturing system is rapidly changing. Shipbuilding is not the exception, and lots of information technologies are utilized in design and production system. In this paper, we tried to implement the XML-based PDM(Product Data Management) system using wireless programming with J2ME MIDP. From this study the possibility to enhance the communication efficiency between the PDM system and production engineers was assured

  • World leading company and research centers have invested much cost and effort into a PLM and digital manufacturing field to obtain their own competitiveness. We have been trying to apply a digital manufacturing, especially simulation to ship production process as a part of PLM implementation for a shipyard. A shipbuilding production system and processes have a complexity and a peculiarity different from other kinds of production systems. So, new analysis and modeling methodology is required to implement digital shipyard. which is a digital manufacturing system for a shipbuilding company. This paper suggests an analysis and simulation modeling methodologies for an implementation of a digital shipyard. New methodologies such as a database-merged simulation, a distributed simulation, a modular simulation with a model library and a 3-tire simulation framework are developed.

  • The management of a panel block shop in a shipyard is a complex process that entails the largest amount of work and in which many decisions are involved. Shipbuilders have considered the process as a bottleneck since every panel for every ship and offshore hull structure must be processed through the shop. In order to maximize process productivity, simulation-based ship production execution system(SPEXS) is proposed for panel block operations utilising discrete-event simulation and simulated annealing. An application of panel block assembly shop, called SPEX-Panel supports production planners by general dispatching rules and metaheuristics to make better scheduling decisions on the shop floor. In addition, the system will help increase productivity in the yard with continuous improvement.
