The purpose of this study is to investigate a theoretical background of digital libraries and current projects on building digital libraries. It begins by describing the shift of paradigm and the concept of digital libraries. The paper continues by summarizing the principles and technology of building digital libraries. It also includes current projects of US, UK, Japan, and National Central Library, KAIST, LG Sangnam Library in Korea.

급변하는 도서관 내외의 정보 환경 변화에 따라 미래 도서관은 지식 수집과 정보 제공이라는 본연의 역할을 더욱 강화하는 방향으로 나아갈 것인지, 아니면 디지털 기술과 인터넷을 통한 정보 공유가 도서관 무용론으로 이어질 것인지 그 어느 때보다 커다란 도전에 직면해 있다 할 것이다. 기존의 도서관 장서가 전자책(e-book), 전자저널 등 디지털 매체로 대체되고 있으며, 디지털도서관 프로젝트에 의한 자료의 접근환경이 변화하는 상황에서 미래 도서관에서 장서의 변화를 조망하고 그 대응 전략을 살펴보고자 한다.

A digital library could be understood as not a part of information cycling, but whole process of information production, circulation and reproduction. This study suggests that a digital library should be a creator as which it is publishing, circulating, and re-producing the information resources. Therefore, the role of intrinsic DRM (Digital Resources Management) can be interpreted as a digital library. Open access model have been already adopted to many university libraries, many university libraries are publishing free access online research resources by themselves. Also, research collection based on cloud computing can be extended to networked research collection and share with other university libraries. These evidences show future library can be the digital library with online and open accessible publishing function.

제 3회 디지털도서관 컨퍼런스 및 전시회가 지난달 7일 전국 도서관 및 업게 관계자 450여명이 참석한 가운데 성황리에 막을 내렸다. 한국소프트웨어진흥원, 한국데이터베이스진흥센터, 전자신문 등이 주최한 이번 디지털도서관컨퍼런스 및 전시회는 '디지털도서관 구축과 운영'이라는 주제로 지난달 6일에서 7일까지 이틀간에 걸쳐 삼성동 코엑스 오디토리움과 대서양관에서 진행됐다. 특히 이번행사에는 전국 도서관 관장(책임자)들이 200명이나 참석해 빠르게 확산될 것으로 전망되는 디지털 도서관 구축사업에 대한 업계의 뜨거운 관심을 보여줬다. 디지털도서관컨퍼런스 및 전시회의 이모저모를 살펴봤다.

As the foundation of the National Digital Library(NDL) by the National Library of Korea is in progress, there has been an increasing interest in developing a policy for its successful operations. Although the research and support related to building domestic library policies have been limited so far, it is an important ongoing problem to develop and improve systematic and detailed policies for information services of digital libraries in order for them to continuously advance in a rapidly changing information environment along with various issues. Therefore, through a thorough review of the literature and overseas cases related to the development of digital library policies, this research aims to provide a new direction for establishing service policies of domestic digital libraries including the NDL by extracting its critical factors and issues.

The purpose of this study is to show important considerations when we develop digital library though reviewing and analyzing the digital libraries for the children and youth. The research targets are ICDL and LG Scienceland which are functioning as the digital libraries. The research methods are literary reviews for theory background and analysis of distinctive features from two webpages. As a result of the research. some suggestions for the navigation. labeling. searching. design and interface, content and new technologies that can be employed are made.

디지털도서관은 전통적인 도서관의 역할과 함께 새로운 형태의 전자자원과 웹자원을 열람할 수 있는 시설과 기기를 이용자에게 제공함으로써 IT환경에 익숙한 이용자들에게 검증된 어떤 형태의 정보자원도 제공하는 도서관이다. NDL은 국립중앙도서관의 부서이지만 별도의 공간에서 디지털정보자원만으로 도서관 서비스를 제공하여 명실상부한 디지털도서관의 원형을 구현하였다. 이에 따라 이 연구에서는 NDL의 구성원들의 디지털도서관의 운영고도화를 위한 설문을 바탕으로 디지털도서관 운영모델을 제안하였다. 디지털 도서관의 성공적인 운영을 위한 주요 요인은 조직의 전문성을 비롯하여, 제도적 정보자원의 확보, 정보활용교육에 기반한 홍보방안 수립 등이었다.
