The shrinkage distribution of a dental composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray, Japan) used for dental restoration was observed using a digital image correlation method. In order to analyze the shrinkage distribution formed during and after light irradiation, digital images were taken with different photographing conditions for each period. Optimal photographing conditions during LED irradiation were obtained through a preliminary experiment in which the exposure time was applied from 0.15 ms to 0.55 ms in 0.05 ms intervals. The DIC analysis results showed that the strain was non-uniform. For the initial 20 s of light irradiation the composite resin shrank to the level of 50~60% of the final curing shrinkage. Such large shrinkage amount of the composite resin lump affected the tensile stress concentration near the adhesive region between the composite resin and the substrate.

Tension tests for copper thin films with thickness of $12{\mu}m$ were performed by using a digital image correlation method based on consecutive digital images. When calculating deformation using digital image correlation, a large deformation causes errors in the calculated result. In this study, the calculation procedure was improved to reduce the error, so that the full field deformation and the strain of the specimen could be accurately and directly measured on its surface. From the calculated result, it can be seen that the strain distribution is not uniform and its variation is severe, unlike the distribution in a common bulk specimen. This might result from the surface roughness introduced in the films during the fabrication process by electro-deposition.
In this study the applicability of a Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method was investigated by measuring the displacement and vibration of rock pillar due to underground mining blasting. When combined with a high speed photography technology, the DIC method provides an excellent photographic image processing ability that can be used to convert the evolving full-field surface properties of structures to 2D or 3D set of coordinate values. The measured coordinate sets are then used to calculate the displacement, strain, and velocity of the target structure. This technique is widely used in science and engineering, and continuously finds its new application areas. In this study, the DIC system and the conventional seismograph were compared for their ability to measure the displacement and vibration produced by blasting. In the field test both methods showed similar results. Thus, it is concluded that the DIC method is feasible to measure the ground displacements and vibrations from blasting.

In this study, a digital particle holographic system and its application to channel-flow measurements were investigated. A double-exposure hologram recording system that is capable of recording digital holograms in a short time interval was developed. A correlation coefficient method was used to determine the focal plane of particles. The Wiener filter was used to remove noises and improve image quality. Two-threshold and image segmentation methods were used for binary image transformation. The cross-correlation method was used for particle pairing. The developed system was employed to study channel flow fields, and the axial velocities of channel flow were measured. The measurement errors are acceptable, and this proves the feasibility of using the digital particle holographic system as a good tool for flow-field measurements.
The polymerization shrinkage behavior of dimethacrylate-based composite (Clearfil AP-X, Kuraray) and silorane-based composite (Filtek P90, 3M ESPE) used for dental composite restorations was measured using digital image correlation method. The stress distribution on the surface of specimen was calculated by finite element analysis with equivalent elastic modulus and was compared with the measured shrinkage distribution. Camera images were monitored by a CCD camera during and after the irradiation of light. As a result of the DIC analysis, a non-uniform shrinkage distribution was observed in both composite resins, and the resin core inside the ring specimen had free flowability, leading to in greater shrinkage strain than the resin/ring interfacial region. It was observed that as the distance from the center of the resin increased, the radial average shrinkage strain decreased. The radial average shrinkage strain during light irradiation occurred to be 33% for P90 and 57% for AP-X of the entire strain at the end of the test. The shrinkage behavior of P90 and AP-X was measured to be significantly different from each other during light irradiation. In the resin near the resin/ring interface, it was confirmed that the tensile strain rapidly formed to increase after light irradiation, causing a tensile stressed, interface weak.
In this paper, a progressive failure analysis method was developed using the Hashin failure criterion and crack band model. Using the failure criterion, the failure initiation was evaluated. If the failure initiation is occurred, the damage variables at each failure modes (fiber tension & compression, matrix tension & compression) was calculated according to linear softening degradation behavior and the variables are used to derive the damaged stiffness matrix. The damaged stiffness matrix is reflected to damaged material and the progressive failure analysis is continued until the damage variables to be 1 that complete failure of material. A series of processes were performed using FE commercial code ABAQUS with user defined material subroutine (UMAT). To evaluate the proposed progressive failure model, the experimental results of open hole composite laminate tests was compared with numerical result. Using digital image correlation system, the strain behavior also was compared. The proposed numerical results were coincided well with the experimental results.

In this study, it is evaluated for fracture toughness to analyze crack resistance properties of particulate reinforced composite propellant. Fracture toughness test using WST specimen is conducted by temperature conditions from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-60^{\circ}C$. Evaluation method for fracture toughness calculated using an equation suggested by ASTM E399 with linear elastic fracture mechanics. From these result, splitting loads and stress intensity factors of propellant increase according to decrease of test temperature. Also, the strain fields of specimen surface using digital image correlation increase as temperature decreased from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-40^{\circ}C$, but it sharply decreases at $-60^{\circ}C$ because of brittle behavior.

In this study, wedge splitting tests were performed to evaluate fracture behavior of particle reinforced composite materials. Crack resistance was evaluated by using CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) and crack tip opening angle (CTOA). The particle reinforced composites were tested under various temperature ($-60^{\circ}C{\sim}50^{\circ}C$) and load speed (5~500mm/min). Also, digital image correlation method (DIC) was used to analyze the strain field at crack tip. Test results showed that the fracture energy increased with decreasing temperature and crack resistance increased with increasing load velocity.

The effect of temperature on the fracture energy, crack propagation, and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) was determined for particulate reinforced composites using the wedge splitting test. The materials that were used consisted of a polymer binder, an oxidizing agent, and aluminum particles. The test rate of the wedge splitting specimen was 50 mm/min, the temperature conditions were $50^{\circ}C$, room temperature, $-40^{\circ}C$, and $-60^{\circ}C$. The fracture energy, calculated from splitting load-crack mouth opening displacement(CMOD) curves, increased with decreasing temperature from $50^{\circ}C$ to $-40^{\circ}C$. In addition, the strength of the particulate reinforced composites increased sharply at $-60^{\circ}C$, and the composites evidenced brittle fracture due to the glass transition temperature. The strain fields near the crack tip were analyzed using digital image correlation.
