  • Diesel particulate trap is a core technology for the reduction of PM from diesel vehicles This study presents the features and the characteristics of DPF system when using pellet type filters. In comparison with wall-flow filter, the pellet filter has the advantages of cracking free during regeneration and shape flexibility. Experiments are conducted in a test bench simulated as diesel engine exhaust condition. Pressure drop and particle loading rate was compared by using two pellet filters having the porosity of 70% and 0%. Also its regeneration was tested.

에멀젼 연료를 이용한 디젤엔진의 분무 및 배기특성 연구 (Spray Charaeteristics and Exhaust Emission Tests far a Diesel Engine Using Emulsified Fuels)

  • Experiments have been conducted to investigate the effects of emulsified fuels on the spray characteristics and exhaust emissions in a diesel engine. Four different fuels were examined : diesel, emulsified fuels with water contents which were varied with 13, 15, and l7wt%. Characteristics of fuel spray were measured by an optical method, PLLIF(planar liquid laser induced fluorescence). Compared to diesel fuel, emulsified fuels which had relatively high kinematic viscosity showed smaller spray angle and longer spray tip penetration. The qualitative droplet distributions of emulsified fuels showed worse atomization process than that of diesel fuel. As the water contents were increased, PM and NOx could be reduced simultaneously. It was specially noted that the emulsified fuel with l7wt% water content was found to be the best in reducing rates, NOx 30% and PM 40%.

  • DPF technology has been considered as one of the most effective methods for reducing diesel particulate emission. PSA Peugeot Citroen introduced the DPF equipped diesel passenger car, Peugeot 607 HDI Sedan, in 2000 for the first time in the world, in which SiC filter, an oxidation catalyst, cerium based fuel born catalyst and post-injection technology were used for PM regeneration. In the present study, the characteristics of the Peugeot 607 DPF system were studied on chassis dynamometer and real road driving conditions. The change of emissions and fuel economy during 80,000km operation were also tested. Additionally, ash contents accumulated in the DPF filter was analyzed and particle size distributions was investigated after running of 80,000km.

  • With the significant growth of the number of vehicles environmental problems is raised. NOx SOx, and PM emissions in diesel powered vehicles are larger than that in gasoline because the development of pollutants reduction techniques has not been yet achieved. So it is need to develop after-tratment or to convert into alternative fuel to satisfy emission regula-tion. Among the after-treatment systems to reduce the diesel emissions studies with diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) are done greatly. In this study using DOC reduction efficiency with the change of temperature and catalyst loading was calculated through measurements of CO, HC, PM. and SOX.

  • The particulate matters emitted by diesel locomotives cause serious air pollution in stations and railroad. There have been various attempt to reduce the air pollution from diesel bus or trucks. However, the air pollution from the diesel locomotives has been out of control because there has not any adaptable technology. In this study, a diesel particulate filter was developed and applied to the diesel locomotives. A 3,000 horsepower large-scale locomotive and a 1,500 horsepower middle-scale locomotive were used for the test of the filter. The particulate matter emissions before and after the treatment was monitored by a scanning mobility particle sizer and a dust monitor. As a result, it was observed that the particulate matters could be successfully removed from the emission gases by using the filter.

  • The effects of EGR on emissions were investigated by using a six-cylinder, 8 litre, turbo-charged, heavy-duty diesel engine with a low pressure route EGR system. The experiments were performed at various engine loads while the EGR rates were set from 0% to 30%. Hot and cooled EGR are achieved without cooling and with cooling respectively. To verify the possibility of EGR technology for the applications, test were performed with steady state test cycle. It was found that the exhaust emissions with the EGR system resulted in a very large reduction in oxides of nitrogen at the expense of higher smoke and PM emissions. Increasing the EGR rate leads to deteriorating specific fuel consumption and power at lower speed and higher load. Also, the reduction rates of NOx emissions for hot and cooled EGR are similar.

  • Recently, The world is faced with the very serious problems related to the increasing use of the conventional petroleum fuels. The air pollutions in big cities have been occurred by the exhaust emissions from automobiles. Many researchers have been attracted various oxygen-enriched for the measure of these problems. In this study, Oxygen-enriched air supplied to a diesel engine has significant benefits in reducing the particulate matter emission but detects in increasing the NOx. This study concluded that the oxygen-enriched and cooled-EGR might be a good measure to reduce smoke, particulate emission and NOx in diesel engine.

  • The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is needed for one of various strategies to reduce NOx emission. But to get the proper EGR rate, the intake and exhaust system become complicated, also application of EGR system is difficult because of the penalty in fuel consumption and the increase in particulate matter. This study is focused on the development of EGR valve using the electrical method. The effects of EGR on the characteristics of NOx, CO, CO2 emissions and particulate mater have been investigated using small-displacement size 0.8-liters engine of diesel passenger car operating at several loads and speeds. After the analysis and comparison between conventional E-EGR valve and developed E-EGR valve performance by test bench, the estimation of vehicle application was executed through the EGR map and CVS-75 test result measured on the chassis dynamometer.

  • Presently, mobile diesel equipments contribute a lot to improve the economic feasibility of underground mining and tunneling operations. Even in Korea, a lot of diesel equipments are being applied to the undergroud workings already, but the technology of management and control of them is not sufficient yet. This study handled the production procedure, characteristics and evaluation technology on diesel particulate matte(DPM) which is known as a carcinogen. For easy measurement of DPM using laser dust monitor, conversion known as a carcinogen. For easy measurement of DPM using laser dust monitor, conversion factor(k) to gravimetric concentration has been acquired. It is appeared that the critical material among the diesel exhaust pollutants is becoming DPM instead of NOx from this year of 1996 according to the Government regulation.

  • The government have been tightening EM regulation gradually but the effect is not good because of rapid increase of vehicles. And medium & heavy duty diesel vehicles, even though the number is small, exhaust very large pollutants(about over 50%). Especially it is more severe about old trucks and buses. Accordingly, CNG vehicle and the retrofit of diesel to CNG must be an alternative in order to protect the atmospheric environment and improve the air quality in the metropolitan area. The main object of this study is to secure the retrofit technology of diesel to CNG vehicle and the management system of CNG engine. we passed the government emission certification test. In addition to this, the mass production for retrofit is also studied. Results of emission and durability test for certification are as follows; there was no problem during 30,000km vehicle durability test and good emission levels satisfying the regulation.
