Among after treatment devices which reduce exhaust gas of diesel engine, diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) with high reduction efficiency for gaseous matter and particulate matter is now being studied actively. In this study, an experiment was conducted to analyze the effects on factors of oxidaton characteristics and conversion efficiency of DOC. We tested to estimate change of engine performance whether a 11,000cc diesel engine equipps with DOC or not. We conducted test to estimate the reduction efficiency of exhaust gas in P-5 mode, in D-13 mode of heavy duty diesel regulation mode and in somoke opacity mode for two samples and also we conducted test to analyze the effects about both exhaust gas velocities 1,100rpm and 2,200rpm

In recent years, environmental damage to urban area becomes serious problem due to the exhaust emissions by increasing the number of vehicle . Especially, diesel particulate matters(DPM) are hazardous air pollutant s to human health and environment. The reduction technologies of exhaust emissions from diesel engines are improvement of engine combustion, fuel quality and development of diesel exhaust aftertreatment. In this study, a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) that is one of diesel exhaust aftertreatments was made for performance evaluation . It was tested for NA and turbocharged engine by D-13 mode that currently be used for regulation driving test mode in Korea Scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS) was used for the analysis of the particle size distribution with and w/o DOC. As the results , for NA and tubochartged engine, CO, THC, DPM was respectively reduced 85.7, 40.7,3.3% and 79.1, 53.1, 11.6% by DOC. Test results of particle size distribution was showed that particle number is 107 ~108per ㎤ , 2 $\times$105 ~5$\times$105$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ for weight concentration and 100~200nm for particle mean size in diesel engine and there is no effect to reduce the particle concentration by the DOC.
Particulate matters(PM) have bad effect on the health. We carried out measurements of diesel PM under $10{\mu}m$ diameter from a HSDI diesel engine with a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) by using the ELPI. This paper compares the two results of the smoke level and the PM level of masses and numbers. We also investigated the effect of the DOC. Under high speed and load, HSDI diesel engine exhausts much masses of particulate matters over 100nm diameter, and a number of PM from 7 to 100nm diameters at the same condition. DOC could reduce the total mass of the PM. However, the DOC could increase the number of ultra fine PM. Before light-off of the soot, the DOC absorb the PM and the DOC oxidize the PM after light-off temperature. The fine PM could be made during the oxidation. Therefore, the advanced DOC is needed to reduce the number of the fine PM.

In late 1997, the portion of registered light-duty diesel vehicle was 25.3% and its emission rate was 17.1% in Korea. Especially, diesel particulate matters(DPM) and NOx are hazardous air pollutants to human health and environment in urban area. The reduction technologies of exhaust emissions from diesel engines are improvement of engine combustion, fuel quality and development of diesel exhaust after treatment , In this study , a light-duty diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) that is one of the diesel exhaust after treatment was made for performance evaluation and the emission characteristics were tested on CVS-75 mode. And the analysis of the particle size distribution with scanning mobility particle 100, 67.6% and 66.7, 10.0% for Pt and Pt-V catalyst .And for Pt catalyst, the PM increased 7.8% because of increasing sulfate but Pt-V catalyst reduced the PM to 23.0% . Test results of particle size distribution showed that peak values of number and mass densities are respectively 100∼200nm their distribution trend independent of vehicle speed.

We carry out an experimental investigation to analyze the basic performance of NO(nitric oxide) storage in a lean phase and also analyze the NO reduction achieved by the spraying of reducing agents in the rich phase of the exhaust gas in an LNT(Lean NOx Trap). This is an after-treatment system used to reduce the NOx emissions from a diesel engine. If the stored NO is reduced, we measure the outlet concentration downstream of the LNT. The test LNT material used in the experiments is commercial LNT. After being canned into stainless-steel(SUS304), it was built in a micro bench-flow reactor. Compositions of feed gases, three heated and three no heated gases were sprayed upstream of the LNT to analyze the characteristics. We use various temperatures and space velocities as response variables.

To eliminate $NO_x$ in diesel emission. selective catalyst reduction (SCR) was used in real diesel engine. Among the SCR methods, metal oxide and perovskite catalysts were introduced in this paper. The removal efficiencies with various major, promoter catalysts on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ at different reaction temperature were investigated, and $LaCuMnO_x$ catalyst which has high removal efficiency at the temperature of real diesel exhaust gas was selected. $NO_x$ reduction was carried out over these catalysts in the flow-through type reactor using by-pass ($SV=3,300h^{-1}$). Under the given condition to this study, perovskite catalysts showed considerably high removal efficiency and $LaCuMnO_x$ was the best one among these catalysts in the temperature range of $150{\sim}450^{\circ}C$.

In this study, a thermoelectric module (TEM) and a diesel engine were modeled using 1-D commercial software AMESim, and the performance of the TEM was evaluated when the engine was operated under the NEDC driving cycle. The goal of TEM modeling was to investigate not only the waste heat recovery (WHR) rate and energy converting efficiency, but also the heat transfer rate by taking the materials characteristics into account. In addition, a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) was designed, and it was found that the waste heat recovery with TEM affects the activation of DOC and alters engine exhaust composition. The simulation indicated that the WHR using TEM is beneficial for decreasing the fuel consumption of vehicles, but the reduction in the exhaust temperature affects the activation of DOC, resulting in an approximately 14% increase in CO and HC emissions. Therefore, the effect of waste heat recovery on the automotive emission characteristics must be considered in the development of automotive engine WHR systems.

The objective of this work presented here was experimental study of steadystate and cold start exhaust nano-sized particle characteristics from common rail diesel engine. The effect of the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) on the particle number reduction was insignificant, however, particle number concentration levels were reduced by 3 orders of magnitude into the downstream of diesel particulate filter (DPF). In high speed and load conditions, natural regeneration of trapped particle occurred inside DPF and it was referable to increase particle number concentration. As fuel injection timing was shifted BTDC $6^{\circ}CA$ to ATDC $4^{\circ}CA$, particle number concentration level was slightly reduced, however particle number and size was increased at ATDC $9^{\circ}CA$. Nucleation type particle reduced and accumulation type particle was increased on EGR condition.
