The stress-strain relationship of soil is dependent on a number of factors such as soil type, density, stress level and stress path. Th accurate stress-stain relationship can be predict using a constitutive model incorporated all influencing factors. In this study, an isotropic compression-expansion test and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests with several stress paths were performed on Baekma river sand to investigate parameters characteristics of Lade's single work hardening model depending on the stress path.. Based on test results, the parameters of yield function (h, ${\alpha}$) are not much influenced by stress level and stress path, the these parameters do affect a little bit of stress-strain behavior. The parameters h and ${\alpha}$ are closely related to failure criterion ${\eta}_1$, they can be replaced by failure criterion parament. We also observed that predicted values from the Lade's single hardening constitutive model are well matched with the observed data.

This paper presents a numerical method for implementing a nonlinear constitutive material model developed by Lade, into a finite element computer program. The techniques used are based on the displacement method for the solution of axial symmetric and plane strain nonlinear boundary value problems. Laboratory behaviour of Baekma river sand(#40-60) is used to illustrate the determination of the parameters and verification of the model. Computer procedure is developed to determine the material parameters for the nonlinear model from the raw laboratory test data. The model is verified by comparing its predictions with observed data used for the determination of the parameters and then with observed data not used for the determination. Three categories of tests are carried out in the back-prediction exercise; (1) A hydrostatic test including loading and unloading response, (2) Conventional triaxial drained compression tests at three different confining pressure and (3) A model strip footing test not including in the evaluation of material parameters. Pertinent observations are discussed based on the comparison of predicted response and experimental data.
A study on the undrained behavior of isotropically consolidated clay-sand mixtures was carried out using the automated triaxial testing apparatus. Overconsolidated ratio, effective mean pressure and clay content( up to 20% bentonite) were the factors varied in the experimental investigation. Undrained behavior(strength and pore water pressure generation during shear in triaxial loading) depends upon overconsolidation ratio, confining pressure and clay content. Significant changes in undrained compression characteristics occurred at around 20% of clay contents in the sand. The test results were analyzed and their behaviors were interpreted within the framework of plasticity constitutive model for clay-sand mixtures. Possible physical bases for the proposed forms are discussed. Validation of the applied model using the laboratory results is also given.
FEM analyses which are based on modified Cam-clay theory have been generally used in such cases as analyses of stability and displacement fur embankment construction on soft clays. However, the Modified Cam Clay Model can generate some problems in anisotropic stress conditions of field because the critical state theory has been developed through many laboratory tests in isotropic conditions. Thus, the applicability on the prediction of undrained shear strength and pore water pressure which was based on the critical state theory was evaluated by triaxial tests and numerical analyses in isotropic and anisotropic conditions. Used samples often come out in domestic area, together with general low plastic clays which are showing dilatant behavior in shearing process. They were evaluated by laboratory tests and FEM based on MCCM. From the results of test and numerical analysis, the predictions of undrained strength in low plastic clays well coincided with each other in both isotropic and anisotropic conditions. However, the generation of porewater pressure was often overestimated during undrained shearing in anisotropic conditions. The results can generate the errors in the prediction of stress path of field sites during loading such as construction of embankment on soft clays because the field is subjected to anisotropic conditions during loading.
In the companion paper, a constitutive model was proposed in order to represent brittleness and dilatancy for cohesionless soils. An optimized design methodology was proposed on the basis of real-coded genetic algorithm in order to determine parameters fir the proposed model systematically. The material parameters were then determined by that algorithm. In order to verify the proposed model, triaxial tests were peformed under $K_0$ conditions for weathered soils. In addition, the results of istropic compressed triaxial tests for granular materials verified the proposed model. For those results the brittle stress-strain relationship and the dilatancy could be modeled reasonably by the proposed model. As a result it was found that the proposed model can appropriately represent the behavior on weathered soil and granular soil.
This paper dealt with the influence of experimental error generated inevitably during performing experiments on the granular soil behaviour analysis selecting Lade's Single Work-Hardening constitutive model. Several isotropic compression-expansion tests and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests with various confining pressures for Baekma river sands were performed and the values of parameters for the above model were determined using computer program developed for this study based on regression analysis. By finding the range of the upper and lower bound for deviator stress and volumetric strain versus axial strain dependant on the increase and decrease of the standard deviation from mean value of parameters, sensitivities of all the parameters were examined. Practical use of program to determine the parameters and capability to predict the behaviour of granular soil by Lade's Single Work -Hardening model verified.
The results from normally consolidated isotropic drained and undrained triaxial compression tests (NCIU and NCID) on sand with high silt content were presented in this paper. The experiments were performed on specimens of Nak-dong River sand with 63% silt content under effective confined pressures, 100 kPa to 400 kPa. From test results, Sandy silt became initially compressive but eventually appeared to provide dilatancy response throughout the entire stress-strain curve The behavior of sandy silt was more difficult to characterize than that of clay and sand due to lower plastic characteristic. Especially, the samples exhibited dilatancy development during shear after failure. The shear behavior and shear strength parameters of sandy silt can be determined as stress-strain behaviors are described by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The shear behaviors were observed increasing dilatancy volume change tendency with strain-softening tendency after failure. In this paper, the behavior of dilatancy depends on not only sand content but also fine content with low-cohesion during shear in the samples of sandy silt.
This study was performed a series of the isotropic compression-expansion tests and the drained triaxial tests with various the relative densities 40%, 60%, 80% and 95% for bottom ash. Using the tests results the characteristic of the parameters of Lade's single hardening constitutive model were investigated. The soil parameters Kur and n representing elastic behavior are not much affected by the change of the relative density. The other parameters such as failure criterion(m, ${\eta}_1$), hardening function(c, p) and plastic potential(${\psi}_2$, ${\mu}$) are in a positive linear relationship with the relative density. Since the soil parameters h and ${\alpha}$ representing yield function do not change much to the change of relative density and also closely related to failure criterion, they can be replaced by failure criterion ${\eta}_1$. We also observed that predicted values from the Lade's single hardening constitutive model were well consistent with the observed data.

The behavior of pure silt was investigated by using an automated triaxial testing device. The stress-strain behavior of silt due to the volume deformation tendency was compared with the behavior of clay prior to failure and behavior at failure under monotonic undrained compression and extension conditions. A pure silica flour was chosen to form samples. The isotropically normally-consolidated samples with 450 kPa of effective mean confining pressure and overconsolidated samples through unloading were tested. Based on the experimental results, it was qualitatively identified that the undrained strength of normally-consolidated silt increases due to its dilatant nature which is not seen in clay. Also the overconsolidated silt shows a significantly different behavior under the monotonic loadings due to the volume deformation tendency.
The drained and undrained behavior of pure silt was investigated experimentally. Special attention was given to the stress-strain behavior of silt prior to failure and behavior at failure under monotonic and cyclic loading. A pure silica flour was chosen to form samples with two different densities of D,=80%, eo=0.68 and D,=35%, eo=0.9. The isotropically consolidated samples were tested in the triaxial testing device under monotonic undrained, drained compression and extension conditions. Also samples were tested under cyclic undrained condition. Based on the experimental results. it was qualitively identified that the overall behavior of silt is similar to that of sand. When compared with clay, silt shows a significantly different behavior due to its dilatant nature under both the monotonic and cyclic shear loadings.
