  • This paper presents the equivalent nodal load for the element stiffness which represents the influence of the stiffness change such as the addition of elements, the deletion of elements, and/or the partial change of element stiffness. The reanalysis of structure using the equivalent load improves the efficiency very much because the inverse of the structural stiffness matrix, which needs a large amount of computation to calculate, is reused in the reanalysis. In this paper, the concept of the equivalent load for the element stiffness is described and some numerical examples are provided to verify it.

  • In this study, a structural optimal design of 10 MW composite blade was performed using bend-twist coupled(BTC) design concept. Bend-twist coupling of blade means the coupling behavior between the bending and torsional deflections due to the composite lamina with fiber angle biased from the blade longitudinal axis. This can potentially improve the overall performance of composite blade and reduce the dynamic loading. Parametric studies on layup angle, thickness and area of off-axis carbon UD were conducted to find the optimum coupling effect with weight reduction. Comparing the results of fatigue load analysis between conventional model and BTC applied model, the damage equivalent load(DEL) of blade root area were decreased about 3% in BTC model. To verify the BTC effect experimentally, a 1:29 scaled model was fabricated and the torsion at the tip under deflection behavior of blade stiffener model was measured by static load test.

  • Several series of fracture tests were conducted to explore the fracture characteristics and to determine the fracture energy of concrete. A stable three-point bend test was employed to generate the load-deflection curves. The fracture energy may then be calculated from the area under the complete load-deflection curve. The initial notch-to-beam depth ratio (${\alpha}_0$/H) was varied from zero to 0.6. The prediction formula for the fracture energy of concrete is also derived and is found to depend on the tensile strength and aggregate size. The proposed fracture energy formula can be used for the fracture analysis of concrete structures. The present study also devises an equivalent crack length concept to predict the maximum failure loads of concrete beams. A simple formula for the equivalent crack length is proposed.

  • A nonlinear dynamic response structural optimization process is proposed for the television (TV) packing system that protects the damage from a drop situation using the equivalent static loads (ESLs). Topology optimization using ESLs is carried out for conceptual design, and shape optimization using stress ESLs for a virtual model is performed for detailed design. Stress ESLs are static loads that generate the same displacement as well as the stress fields of linear static analysis as those of nonlinear dynamic analysis. Thus, the response of nonlinear dynamic analysis can be utilized as a constraint in the linear static structural optimization. An actual example is solved to validate the process. The drop test of a television packaging system is analyzed by LS-DYNA, and NASTRAN is used for optimization.

  • The principle objective of this study is to evaluate the fatigue behavior of structural steel components of highway bridges subjected to service stresses. The main aspects of this investigation are; 1) a measurement and statistical analysis of service stress cycles observed in highway bridge. 2) fatigue tests under equivalent constant-amplitude(CA) loading and simulated variable-amplitude(VA) loading 3) a evaluation of the fatigue behavior under VA-loading by eqivalent root mean cube (RMC) stress range. Theoretically, the RMC model is adequate in evaluation of fatigue behavior under VA-loading, because the regression coefficient (m) of crack growth rate is 3 approximately. The result of fatigue test shows that the RMC model is fitter than the current RMS model in fatigue evaluation under VA-loading. The interaction effects and sequence effects under VA-loading affect little fatigue life of structural components. As the transition rate of stress ranges is higher, the crack growth rate is higher.

  • A failure criterion must be considered in each failure mode and loading condition to provide easy determining strength parameters, flexibility and rational simplicity. In this study, new failure criterion was developed by introducing equivalent strength under biaxial loading of tension and torsion. The experimental results showed that the equivalent biaxial strength has a power law relation with respect to a parameter, cos($tan^{-1}R_b$). Failure strength under biaxial loadings could be predicted as a function of tensile strength, torsional strength and biaxial ratio. The scattering of experimental data could be predicted using a Weibull distribution function and the concept of equivalent biaxial strength. Also, in this study, a fatigue theory was developed based on a plane stress model which enabled the S-N curve for combined stress states to be predicted from the S-N data for uniaxial loading. The prediction models can be predicted a biaxial strength and fatigue life of general laminated composite naterials under multi-axial loadings.

  • Due to the difficulty in considering dynamic load in the view point of a computer resource and computing time, it is common that external load is assumed as ideal static loads. However, structural analysis under static load cannot guarantee the safety of design of the structures under dynamic loadings. Recently, the systematic method to construct equivalent static load from the given dynamic load has been proposed. Previous study has calculated equivalent static load through the optimization procedure under displacement constraints. However, previously reported works to distribute equivalent static load were based on ad-hoc methods. Improper selection of equivalent static loading positions may results in unreliable prediction of structural design. The present study proposes the selection method of the proper locations of equivalent static loads to dynamically applied loads when we consider transient dynamic structural problems. Moreover, it is appropriate to take into account the stress constraint as well as displacement constraint condition for the safety design. But the previously reported studies of equivalent static load design methods considered only displacement constraint conditions but not stress constraint conditions. In the present study we consider not only displacement constraint but also stress constraint conditions. Through a few numerical examples, the efficiency and reliability of proposed scheme is verified by comparison of the equivalent stress between equivalent static loading and dynamic loading.

  • Based on the equivalent uniform stress concept presented by Seed and Idriss, sinusoidal cyclic loads which simplified the earthquake loads have been applied in evaluating the liquefaction resistance strength experimentally. However, the liquefaction resistance strength of soil based on the equivalent uniform stress concept can not exactly reflect the dynamic characteristics of the irregular earthquake motion. In this study, the criterion of the liquefaction resistance strength was determined by applying real earthquake loading to the cyclic triaxial test. From the test results, relationships between liquefaction behaviors of saturated sand and earthquake characteristics such as magnitude or time-duration were determined. Magnitude scaling factors to determine the soil liquefaction resistance strength in seismic design were also proposed.

  • This paper presents a hypoplastic model for three-dimensional analysis of concrete structures under monotonic, cyclic, proportional and non-proportional loading. The constitutive model is based on the concept of equivalent uniaxial strains that allows the assumed orthotropic model to be described via three equivalent uniaxial stress-strain curves. The characteristics of these curves are obtained from the ultimate strength surface in the principal stress space based on the Willam-Warnke curve. A cap model is added to consider loading along or near the hydrostatic axis. The equivalent uniaxial curve is based on the Popovics and Saenz models. The post-peak behavior is adjusted to account for the effects of confinement and to describe the change in response from brittle to ductile as the lateral confinement increases. Correlation studies with available experimental tests are presented to demonstrate the model performance. Tests with monotonic loading on specimens under constant lateral confinement are considered first, followed by biaxial and triaxial tests with cyclic loads. The triaxial test example considers non-proportional loading.

  • An effective method was proposed in this study which can improve the strengthening effect of continuous girder bridges by external tendons. The improvement of the proposed strengthening method in comparison with conventional methods was analyzed by applying equivalent load concept. In order to verify the strengthening effect, the enhancement of load-carrying capacity achieved by external prestressing was investigated through the test of continuous beams that were or were not strengthened by the external prestressing. The continuous beams were fabricated by making the deck slab continuous according to general construction practice of an actual concrete girder bridge. The test results showed that the deflections and strains of the strengthened beam were significantly reduced when comparing with those of the non-strengthened beam for the same level of external loads, and the stiffness of the member increased by strengthening. In particular, it was verified that the proposed method can effectively reduce the tensile stresses of the deck caused by negative moment at the intermediate supports of a continuous bridge.
