  • Measurements with filaments and thermocouples and computations with Oppdif and FDS were carried out to investigate the impact of flame strain, agent addition, and buoyancy on the structure and extinction of nonpremixed counterflow flames. Measurements through 2.2 s drop tests in microgravity conditions and experiments in normal gravity conditions were compared with the results of computations. For the global strain rates 7 s$^{-1}$ through 100 s$^{-1}$ , the turning point behavior in the critical nitrogen concentration at O-g was confirmed. The effects of buoyancy, that is, changes in the flame curvature and thickness were also confirmed by the computations with FDS. There was agreement in the peak flame temperature and its position between the computations and the measurements in the near extinction methane/air diffusion flames in microgravity.

  • In this study, the effect of reformer gas(RG) on the performance development of the exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) was investigated numerically in $CH_4/air$ premixed flame. Typically EGR is used to reduce the flame temperature and NOx emission, whereas RG can be used to improve the flame stability, such as homing velocity. This competitive relationship is focused in this study. As a result, it can be identified that the adjustments of EGR and RG ratio can achieve the low NOx emission and the similar flame stability to pure $CH_4/air$ premixed flame simultaneously.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation on propagation of hydrocarbon (ethylene-air mixture) detonation in a deformable copper tube. In this study, we deal with interactions of multi-materials, gas and solid. In gas phase, the model consists of the reactive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and one step chemical reaction. Also we use Inviscid Euler equations in solid. In order to the interface tracking and the determination of boundary values, our model handle level-set and ghost fluid method. Through the numerical simulation results, we identify generations of expansion waves and interferences by the wall deformation. In addition, we predict the minimum copper tube thickness that ensures safety under an incident detonation.

  • In this study of lifted hydrogen jet with coaxial air, we have experimentally studied the characteristics of stabilization point in turbulent diffusion flames. The objectives are to present the phenomenon of a liftoff height decreasing as increasing fuel velocity and to analyse the flame structure and behavior including liftoff mechanisms. The fuel jet exit velocity was changed from 100 up to 300 m/s and a coaxial air velocity was fixed at 16 m/s with a coflow air less than 0.1 m/s. For the simultaneous measurement of velocity field and reaction zone, PIV and OH PLIF technique was used with two Nd:Yag lasers and CCD cameras. It has been suggested that the stabilization of lifted hydrogen diffusion flames was correlated with a turbulent intensity, $S_t{\sim}u^{\prime}$, and jet Reynolds number, $S_t{\sim}Re^{0.017}_{jet}$.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of forcing amplitude on the tone-excited non-premixed jet flame of the resonance frequency. Visualization techniques are employed using the laser optic systems, which are RMS tomography, PLIF and PIV system. There are three lift-off histories according to the fuel flow rates and forcing amplitudes; the regime I always has the flame base feature like turbulent flame when the flame lift-off, while the flame easily lift-off in the regime II even if a slight forcing amplitude applied. The other is a transient regime and occurs between the regime I and regime II, which has the flame base like the bunsen flame of partial premixed flame. In the regime I and II, the characteristics of the mixing and velocity profile according to the forcing phase were investigated by the acetone PLIF, PIV system. Particular understanding is focused on the distinction of lift-off history in the regime I and II.

  • This paper deals with the experimental results that apply to a new wire by an artificial flame-maker because it's difficult to directly analyze the characteristic of deterioration by a forest fire. Those results include surface characteristics for a conductor. In addition, there's been an experiment and analysis about the surface characteristics of the wire of ACSR 480$\textrm{mm}^2$ which was removed from Pohang area by a forest fire. Then, the database will be made to predict the state of deteriorated wires by a forest fire using those two data, and data necessary to diagnose the life state of an ACSR wire affected by a forest fire will be given.

  • A general combustion characteristics of forcing nonpremixed jet in laminar flow rates have been conducted experimentally to investigate the effect of forcing amplitude with the resonant frequency of fuel tube. There are two patterns of the flame lift-off feature according to the velocity increasing; one has the decreasing values of forcing amplitude on the lift-off occurrence when a fuel exit velocity is increasing, while the other has the increasing values. These mean that there are the different mechanisms in the lift-off stability of forced jet diffusion flame. Especially, the characteristics of attached jet flame regime are concentrically observed with flame lengths, shapes, flow response and velocity profiles at the nozzle exit as the central figure. The notable observations are that the flame enlogation, in-homing flame and the occurrence of a vortical motion turnabout have happened according to the increase of forcing amplitude. It is understood by the velocity measurements and visualization methods that these phenomena have been relevance to an entrainment of surrounding oxygen into the fuel nozzle as the negative part of the fluctuating velocity has begun at the inner part of the fuel nozzle.

  • Existence of triple flames in a lean-rich concentration field is studied both experimentally and theoretically using large activation energy asymptotic technique adopting counterflow system as a model problem. Experiment shows that in triplet system of a lean and a rich premixed flame separated by a diffusion flame, either lean or rich premixed flame merges with diffusion flame as stretch is increased, such that transition boundary between 3-flame and 2-flame exists. The region in which 3-flame can exist forms an island within rich-lean concentration fields for large stretch, where as it is extends to the line of (.OMEGA.$_{0}$/.OMEGA.$_{F}$)$_{R}$=0 or (.OMEGA.$_{F/}$.OMEGA.$_{0}$)$_{L}$=0 for small stretch. Theoretical results show the qualitative agreement with experiment and the existence of limiting stretch over which 3-flame can not exist.t.t.t.t.t.t.

  • The annular and coaxial swirl flows between which LPG is supplied was selected to study the swirling flames in double co-swirl flows. The objective of this study is to research into the effects of double co-swirl flow conditions on the stability limit, the reverse flow boundary, and the time mean temperature distributions of the swirling flames. The increase of swirl intensity of axial flow makes the stability limit decrease, but the annular swirl flow (SM>0.5) makes stability and swirl intensity of axial flow increase, And the existence of axial swirl flow makes flame intensive and small in size, and this may be applicable to the design of high power compact combustor.
