  • Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the load carrying capacity of a target bridge structure based on the simple slab bridge of concrete over 20 years of public service. Method: By performing static loading test and dynamic loading test, the displacement, strain, impact factor, and natural frequency values were measured and evaluated through analysis method. Result: The main results of this study are as follows. First, the maximum displacement and maximum strain of S1 were assessed at 2.917 mm and 44.720 𝜇ε( tensile) and -13.760 𝜇ε(compression), respectively, with S2 maximum displacement and maximum strain being 2.100 mm and 4.870 𝜇ε(tensile), respectively. Second, the maximum measured impact factor was 0.191 in section S1 A-A, and the maximum measured impact factor was 0.155 in section S2 C-C. Third, the natural frequency was assessed at 6.086 Hz, and the measurement was found to be within the range of 6.152 Hz to 6.738 Hz. Conclusion: The tested bridge may be evaluated to show good behavior and characteristics for the design load.

  • In this study, dynamic deformation characteristics of sands under dry, saturated drained and undrained conditions were investigated at small to intermediate strains using the modified Stokoe-type torsional shear tests. The equipment was modified to saturate the specimen and to maintain the B-value above 0.99 during the test. On two types of sands, Geumgang sand from Korea and Toyoura sand from Japan, tests were carried out at various drainage conditions, void ratios, and effective confining pressures. Based on the test results, dynamic deformation characteristics, shear modulus (G) and damping ratio (D), and/or pore-water pressure were measured with strain amplitude and number of loading cycles. Variations of G and D at small ($\gamma_c<{10}^{-3}\%$) to medium (${10}^{-3}\%<\gamma_c<{10}^{-1}\%$) strains were measured under various drainage conditions, and test results were intensively compared considering drainage conditions.

  • This study investigates an existing steel plate girder railroad bridge after superstructure rehabilitation to monitor static and dynamic responses using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. This paper also presents an experimental technique to estimate the vertical deflection of the bridge using FBG sensors. Seven FBG sensors are multiplexed in a single optical fiber and installed in parallel pairs along the length of the bridge, with one set at the top flange and the other at the bottom flange. In addition to FBG sensors, a conventional electric strain gauge and anLVDT are installed at the mid-span of the bridge for comparison. A test train consisting of one locomotive is placed at the center of the bridge to produce the maximum static effect. The train is also made to pass over the bridge at different speeds ranging from 10 km/h to 90 km/h to monitor the dynamic response of the bridge. This study demonstrates that the measured strains using the FBG sensor compared well with the readings from the electric strain gauge. The results show that the proposed instrumentation technique is capable of estimating the vertical deflection of the bridge for various loading conditions, which is crucial in structural health monitoring. Several dynamic characteristics of the bridge were also identified.

  • In this work, a 6 degree of freedom lumped mass model is constructed for an OHC-type cam valve train analysis, and the model is verified experimentally. Using the verified model, an optimum cam profile is designed to minimize the maximum contact force between cam and follower under the constraints such as cam lift and cam event angle. The designed cam was carefully machined and tested experimentally. As operating the designed cam shaft on the test rig, the valve motion was precisely measured with laser displacement meter and the contact force was indirectly monitored by measuring strain at a certain point of the finger follower. Judging from the model simulation and experiment results, the maximum contact force can be reduced as much as more than 16.7 percent under maintaining the original valve flow area by adopting the optimum cam profile.

  • In this study, the applicability of PVDF films for measurements of dynamic strain in a structure was investigated. A relationship between the strain and the voltage response of a PVDF film was analytically derived. Free vibration test on a steel cantilever beam was performed and vibration response of the beam was measured both by a convential foil strain gauge and a PVDF film. Strain-voltage relationship obtained from the experiment was compared with the analytic relationship. Good agreement between the analytic and experimental relationships was observed. It was found that a tailored PVDF film can measure the dynamic strain of a structure as accurate as a conventional foil strain gauge.

  • Dynamic fracture mechanism of rock is important to improve rapid excavation method and develop precise damage assesment of rock mass in the vicinity of an excavation. In order to investigate dynamic fracture characteristics and dynamic damage mechanism of brittle materials, this study employed pulse shape-controlled Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system. The P- and S-wave velocities of the tested samples were measured before and after tests to examine damage of the samples. The decay ratios of the Ultrasonic wave velocities increased with impart velocities and the samples which have lower strength showed higher permanent strain significantly.

  • Agricultural tractors are utilized on rough road such as rice paddy field. Therefore, static and dynamic load should be considered when simulating structural analysis with finite element analysis (FEA). But it consumes a lot of time and effort to measure dynamic load because of difficulty and complexity in modeling various field working load conditions and kinematics of machinery. In this paper, to reduce the efforts, 4-post road simulator is developed for agricultural tractor like modeling commercial vehicle. In proving ground test in our facility, I measured acceleration of front/rare axle and strain of body frame to validate input loads. The acceleration is used for defining input loads. And strain is validated with dynamics analysis including mode superposition method. As a result, I was able to calculate 4-post input road profiles, which represent similar proving ground profile with good reliability.

  • Various studies have been conducted on the structural health monitoring using optical fiber. Optical fibers can be used to measure multiple and distributed strain. Among the optical fiber sensors, FBG sensor has advantages of dynamic response measurement and high precision, but the number of measurement points is limited. Distributed fiber sensors, represented by distributed Brillouin sensors, usually have more than 1000 measurement points, but the low sampling rate makes dynamic measurements impossible. In this study, a hybrid nerve sensor system using only the advantages of the FBG sensor and the distributed Brillouin sensor has been proposed. Laboratory experiments were performed to verify the proposed system, and the accuracy and reproducibility were verified by comparing with commercial sensors. Applying the proposed system, dynamic response ambient measurements are used to evaluate the global state of the structure. When an abnormal condition is detected, the local condition of the structure is evaluated by static response measurement using the distributed measurement system. The proposed system can be used for efficient structural health monitoring.

  • This paper proposes a double cantilever sandwich-beam method fur evaluating the frequency dependence of dynamic characteristics of rubbers. The flexural vibration of a double cantilever sandwich-beam specimen with an inserted rubber layer was studied using a finite element simulation in combination with the sine-sweep test. Quadratic relationships of dynamic elastic modulus and material loss factor of rubbers with frequency were suggested employing the least square error method.

  • The most widely used method for determining the blast effects of explosives is the Trauzl lead block test. This test is used to measure the explosive power (strength) of a substance by determining volume increase, which is produced by the detonation of a test explosive charged in the cavity of a lead block with defined quantity and size. In this paper, Trazul lead block test and AUTODYN numerical analysis were conducted to evaluate the coupling medium effect of blast hole. The effects of coupling materials can be expressed as the expansion of the cavity in a standard lead block through explosion of the explosives. The tests were conducted with emulsion explosives. The coupling mediums used as the filling material around a explosive charge were air, sand, water and gelatine. Results of test and numerical analysis showed that expansion of lead block were much more affected by water&gel than by sand and air. The water and gel showed similar results. As expected, the transmitted pressure and dynamic strain was higher in water and gelatine coupled blast hole than in air and sand.
