  • This paper proposes a new DBA (dynamic bandwidth allocation) algorithm for a TWDM PON (time and wave-division multiplexing passive optical network) which is based on XGPON (10-Gigibit-Capable PON). Modifying a DBA algorithm of an XGPON, the proposed algorithm not only allocates the transmission slot but also assigns a wavelength to use for each ONU.

  • Long-Reach PON (LR-PON) is a broadband access network using passive optical network (PON) technology which the reach is extended to 100 km or higher. A major challenge in LR-PON is that the propagation delay between OLT and ONUs is increased by a very significant amount. To effectively and fairly distribute the upstream bandwidth dynamically in LR-PON, we propose a new periodic and multi-thread polling based dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm. We compare the proposed algorithm with traditional DBAs and show its advantage on average packet delay. Numerical results are analyzed under varying offered loads.

  • This paper proposes a new dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm for an XG-PON (10-Gbps-capable passive optical network) system. In the XG-PON system, an ONU (optical network unit) does not explicitly send it request to an OLT (optical line termination). The OLT monitors the upstream bandwidth usage of the ONU to estimate the request of the ONU. Then the OLT performs a dynamic bandwidth allocation process based on the estimated requests.

  • This paper proposes a new dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation algorithm for TWDM PON (time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network) which consists of an OLT (optical line termination) and multiple ONU (optical network unit). The proposed algorithm dynamically limits the number of the upstream wavelengths based on the request amount of ONUs to save power.

  • Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) are an emerging access network technology that provide a low-cost method of deploying optical access lines between a carrier's central office and customer sites. Dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) provides statistical multiplexing between the optical network units for efficient upstream channel utilization. To support dynamic bandwidth distribution, 1 propose an cyclic polling-based DBA algorithm for differentiated classes of service in EPONs. And, I show that an interleaved polling scheme severely decreases downstream channel capacity for user traffics when the upstream network load is low. To obtain realistic simulation results, I used synthetic traffic that exhibits the properties of self-similarity and long-range dependence I then analyzed the network performance under various loads, specifically focusing on packet delays for different classes of traffic.

  • IEEE ratified IEEE802.3ah as the standard of E-PON, while it leaved the specific method of upstream bandwidth allocation as a role of implementation vendors. Many experts have researched the method of enhancing upstream bandwidth throughput and released related papers. This paper presents another novel mechanism to enhance upstream throughput. This mechanism performs the management of upstream queues by giving the minimum bandwidth of different level to each queue. In order to process packets on each queue we adopted a modified weighted DRR technology. By doing so, the transmission throughput of upstream packets can be largely enhanced. The experimental simulation of this mechanism showed an enhancement of bandwidth utilization more than 10% in comparison to legacy method.

  • This paper evaluates performance of a dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation algorithm of TWDM PON (time and wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network) which consists of an OLT (optical line termination) and multiple ONU (optical network unit). The allocation algorithm reduces the number of upstream wavelengths to save power. Using self-similar traffic, we simulate TWDM PON systems and measure the average packet delay and the average number of upstream wavelengths.

  • Passive optical networks (PONs) are the emerging solution for access networks since PONs provide high bandwidth and the low operation cost. In recent, the new solution in access networks is TWDM PON which is a mixture of WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing) and TDM (time-division multiplexing). This paper proposes a new MAC (media access control) protocol for TWDM PON. In addition, this paper proposes and evaluates a new dynamic bandwidth allocation method for TWDM PON.
