  • The fracture processes under dynamic loading in tension were simulated using a proposed numerical approach and analyzed to determine dynamic tensile strength. The dynamic tensile strength and the scatter of the strength data decreased with increasing uniformity coefficients. The differences of static and dynamic tensile strength were due to the stress concentrations and redistribution mechanisms in the rock specimen. Although there were different mechanisms for the static and dynamic fracture processes, the static and dynamic tensile strengths were close to the mean microscopic tensile strength at high values of the uniformity coefficient. This paper shows that the rock inhomogeneity has an effect on dynamic tensile strength and is a factor that contributes to the different specimen strengths under dynamic and static loading conditions.

  • Information on the deformation behavior and fracture strength of rocks subjected to dynamic loadings is important to stability analyses of underground openings underground vibration due to rock blasts, earthquakes and rock bursts. In this study, Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) system was applied to estimate dynamic compressive and tensile fracture strengths of limestone and also examine deformation behavior of limestones under dynamic loadings. A micro-focus X-ray CT scanner was used to observe non-destructively inside the impacted limestone specimens. From the dynamic tests, it was revealed that the limestone have over 140MPa dynamic compressive strength and the strain-rate dependency of the strength. Dynamic Brazilian tensile strength of the limestone exceeds 21MPa and shows over 3 times static Brazilian tensile strength.

  • Investigation of in-situ ground in cold region is difficult due to low accessibility and environmental factors. In this study, correlation between dynamic cone resistance and shear strength is suggested to estimate the strength of frozen soils by using instrumented dynamic cone penetrometer. Tests were conducted in freezing chamber after preparing sand-silt mixture with 2.3% water content. Vertical stresses of 5 kPa and 10 kPa were applied during freezing, shearing, and penetration phase to compare the dynamic cone resistance and shear strength. The dynamic cone resistance, additionally, is calculated to minimize the effect of energy loss during hammer impact. Experimental results show that as the shear strength increases, the dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) decreases nonlinearly, while the dynamic cone resistance increases linearly. This study provides the useful correlation to evaluate strength properties of the frozen soils from the dynamic cone penetration and direct shear tests.

  • It has been an always issue for the blasting or the impact analysis to consider the strength characteristics of the rock materials associate with loading rate dependency. Due to the nature of transient loading, the dynamic rock test requires a careful technique to achieve the stress equilibrium state of the specimen. In this study, to investigate the relationship between the rock dynamic strength and the stress equilibrium state, a series of dynamic uniaxial compression tests for Pocheon granite were performed. As a result, the unbalanced stress state on the specimen can lead to the premature failure on the specimen and the less estimation of dynamic strength characteristic as well as the overestimation of strain rate. Consequently, a careful consideration of rock fracture process to achieve the dynamic force balance on the specimen should be required to make an reasonable evaluation of rock dynamic strength.

  • In this paper, the dynamic stiffness of scaled boundary finite element method(SBFEM) was analytically derived to represent the non-homogeneous space. The non-homogeneous parameters were introduced as an expotential value of power function which denoted the non-homogeneous properties of analysis domain. The dynamic stiffness of analysis domain was asymptotically expanded in frequency domain, and the coefficients of polynomial series were determined to satify the radiational condition. To verify the derived dynamic stiffness of domain, the numerical analysis of the typical problems which have the analytical solution were performed as various non-homogeneous parameters. As results, the derived dynamic stiffness adequatlly represent the features of the non-homogeneous space.

  • This study evaluates the dynamic tensile behavior of HPFRCC according to compressive strength levels of 100, 140 and 180 MPa. Firstly, the compressive stress-strain relationship of 100, 140 and 180 MPa class HPFRCC was analyzed. As a result, the compressive strengths were 112, 150 and 202 MPa, respectively, and the elastic modulus increased with increasing compressive strength. The static tensile strengths of HPFRCC of 100, 140 and 180 MPa were 10.7, 11.5 and 16.5 MPa, and tensile strength also increased with increasing compressive strength. On the other hand, static tensile strength and energy absorption capacity at 100 and 140 MPa class HPFRCC showed no significant difference according to the compressive strength level. It was influenced by the specification of specimen and the arrangement of steel fiber. As a result of evaluating the dynamic impact tensile strength of HPFRCC, tensile strength and dynamic impact factor of all HPFRCCs tended to increase with increasing strain rate from 10-1/s to 150/s. In the same strain rate range, the DIF of the tensile strength was measured higher as the compressive strength of HPFRCC was lower. It is considered that HPFRCC of 100 MPa is the best in terms of efficiency. Therefore, it is advantageous to use HPFRCC with high compressive strength when a high level of tensile performance is required, and it is preferable to use HPFRCC close to the target compressive strength for more efficient approach at a high strain rate such as explosion.

  • The Concrete Capacity Design(CCD) method has been used in the design of anchor since 2001 and Korean design code specify that concrete breakout capacity of CIP anchor under seismic load shall be taken as 75% of static capacity. In this study, an experimental study was performed to evaluate the concrete breakout capacity of unreinforced CIP anchors under dynamic shear force. For the purpose, three static and dynamic shear-loading tests were conducted using 20mm diameter anchors, respectively. The edge distance of 120mm was considered in the tests. In the dynamic tests, 15 cycles pulsating load with 1Hz speed was applied and the magnitude of loading step was increased until concrete breakout failure occurs. From the tests, the concrete breakout capacity under dynamic shear loading showed nearly same capacity by static loading.

  • This study presents static and dynamic strength of coal ashes collected from disposal site of power plant. Main compositions of coal ashes were bottom ashes. In order to evaluate static and dynamic characteristics of coal ash, NGI direct-simple shear tests, cyclic simple shear tests and direct shear tests were conducted. The strengths of coal ashes from those tests were compared to those of sands. Bottom ashes among coal ashes used for this study were classified as sand from the grain size distribution and show higher strength properties than the sands. For utilization of coal ashes in civil engineering project, mixing coal ashes with sandy soil using batch plant is inconvenient and the cost is higher than the spreading sand layer and coal layer alternately. In order to simulate both mixing type and layered type construction, sands and coal ashes were mixed with volume ratio 50:50 and prepared sand and coal ash layers alternately with the same volume ratio. From the tests mixed coal ashes-specimen shows slightly higher static and cyclic strength than the layered specimen at the same density. The higher strength seems due to the angular grain of bottom ashes. The cyclic stress ratio at liquefaction decreases rapidly as the number of cycle increases at mixed specimen than that of layered specimen.

  • When a thin walled member is subjected to compression in a condition such as collision, the energy is mainly absorbed by axial crumpling. In this case, dynamic crushing strength of the member is increased due to the effects of strain-rate compared with the static strength, even though the inertia effect is neglected. In this paper, the method of predicting the static crushing for tubular members is presented using the kinematic method of plasticity. Since, a predicted crushing load, taking account of the dynamic yield stress, usually overestimates the effects of strain-rate, the average plastic flow stress for the effects of strain-rate is used to obtain the dynamic crushing load for tubular members. The analytical results are compared with the experiments published in references, and a good correlation is observed.
