  • In order to evaluate the bearing capacity behaviour of a monopod suction bucket foundation for an offshore wind tower at the western sea of Korea, a centrifuge load test and numerical analyses were performed. The monopod bucket foundation was designed to be installed in a silty sand layer. The model soil was prepared to simulate a target site by using soil samples having similar properties and controlling relative density. In-flight miniature cone penetration test and bender element array were used to confirm that the model soil had represented the target site conditions. The load - rotation curve of the centrifuge load test was analysed. A series of numerical analyses were performed to validate the experimental conditions. Self-weight of the model, distance to the boundary and elastic modulus of the soil layer were varied to study their effects on the load - rotation curves.

  • Ninety-six specimens of nine puffer fishes landed at a fish market of Pusan, Korea were assayed for anatomical distribution of toxicity. The puffers, Lagocephalus gloveri ('geommilbog'), Fugu rubripes rubripes ('jajubog'), Fugu rubripes chinesis ('geomjajubog'), Lagocephalus wheeleri ('hinmilbog') and Arothron firmamentum ('byeolbog'), were shown to be nontoxic in muscle and skin. However, toxicities in skins of four specimens of Lagocephalus gloveri and a specimen of Arothron firmamentum were more than 10MU/g In the puffer, Fugu xanthopterus ('ggachibog'), the skin showed to be weakly toxic as far as nine specimens out of 27 ones are concerned, and the muscle was nontoxic in all specimens. Meanwhile, it was noted that the puffer, Fugu vermicularis radiatus was found to be a toxic species, differing from the toxicity known so far. Their highest toxicities were 3,880, 1,191, 1,115, 219, 289, 5,620 and 753MU/g for liver, intestine, skin, muscle, testis, ovary and bile, respectively.

  • Reliability analyses of Level I, II and III for bearing capacity, overturning and sliding of quaywall are carried out to investigate their safety levels depending upon its failure modes, and sensitivity analyses of each design variable are performed to find their effects on safety levels of quaywall. Reliability indices was 1.416 for both level II and III for case study I, and with 2.201 and 1.880, respectively, for the case study II at the critical loading conditions. Thus we were able to know that Level II (FORM) approach is good enough to use in practical design. Generally, it was found that probabilities of failure of quaywall were higher for sliding and bearing capacity failure modes and lower for overturning failure mode. From sensitivity analyses, the most influential design variables to reliability index of quaywall were coefficient of friction, residual water pressure and resistance moment for the sliding, overturning and bearing capacity failure modes, respectively. Especially, the sensitivity of reliability index due to inertial force and dynamic water pressures, which include a large COV when earthquake occurs, did not change greatly.

  • The volumetric pressure plate extractor (VPPE) was modified for the measurement of shear wave velocity ($V_s$) at various levels of matric suction as well as soil water characteristic curve (SWCC). A non-destructive technique with a pair of bender element (BE) was employed in order to measure the $V_s$ and the corresponding maximum shear modulus ($G_{max}$) of unsaturated soil specimens. Three types of soil were collected from different road construction sites in Korea. For all test soils, the variations in $G_{max}$ with the various levels of water content and matric suction were investigated using the developed apparatus. Compared with the preceding results from the suction-controlled torsional shear (TS) testing system and in-situ seismic tests, the feasibility fur evaluating modulus characteristics of unsaturated compacted soils with the developed VPPE-BE system was assessed. It was confirmed that the newly developed system would be potentially helpful in modeling seasonal variation of modulus.

  • This study aims to review a topology optimization based on finite element analysis (FEA) for conceptual design of platform in the 10MW class floating type wave-wind hybrid power generation system (WHPGS). Two topology optimization theories, density method (DM) and homogenization design method (HDM) were used to check which one is more effective for a simplified structural design problem prior to the topology optimization of platform of WHPGS. From the results of the simplified design problem, the HDM was applied to the topology optimization of platform of WHPGS. For the conceptual platform design of WHPGS, FEA model was created and then the structural analysis was performed considering offshore environmental loads at installation site. Hydrodynamics analysis was carried out to calculate pressure on platform and tension forces in mooring lines induced from the offshore environmental loads such as design wave and current. Loading conditions for the structural analysis included the analysis results from the hydrodynamic analysis and the weights of WHPGS. Boundary condition was realized using inertia relief method. The topology optimization of WHPGS platform was performed using the HDM, and then the conceptual arrangement of main structural members was suggested. From the results, it was confirmed that the topology optimization might be a useful tool to design the conceptual arrangement of main structural members for a newly developed offshore structure such as the floating type WHPGS.

  • In this study, the drag forces on a submerged square cylinder were analyzed using a three dimensional hydrodynamic model. The numerical results were compared with the experimental results to check the reliability of the numerical simulations, and the characteristics of the drag forces with the relative depths were analyzed by analyzing the pressure acting on the cylinder surface, which are normally difficult to measure experimentally. The numerical results showed that the drag forces acting on a submerged square cylinder originate mainly from the pressure forces, and component of the shear forces decreased with increasing relative depth. The pressure coefficient distributions showed that in the case of a low relative depth, a relatively high pressure was formed in the front of a cylinder, and a relatively low pressure was formed in the rear, which gives a high drag coefficient. In a high relative depth, the pressure in the front decreased and pressure in the rear increased, which is a similar phenomenon to that normally observed in two dimensional square cylinder flow. The effect of the static pressure was analyzed and the surface elevation difference between the front and rear zone of a cylinder has a limited effect on the drag forces. Finally, the numerical results showed that the drag forces acting on a submerged square are dominated by the dynamic pressure formed by three dimensional flow and the distribution of local surface elevation.

  • The prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) are one of the most widely used techniques to accelerate the consolidation of soft clay deposits and dredged soil. Discharge capacity is one of the factors affecting the behavior of PVDs. In the field, a PVD is confined by clay or dredged soil, which is normally remolded during PVD installation. Under field conditions, soil particles may enter the PVD drainage channels, and the consolidation settlement of the improved subsoil may cause 131ding of the PVD. These factors will affect the discharge capacity of the PVDs. In this study an experimental study was carried out to estimate the discharge capacity of three different types of PVDs by utilizing the large-scale laboratory model testing and small-scale laboratory model testing equipments. The several factors such as confinement condition (confined by soft marine clay or dredged soil) and variations of the discharge capacity were studied with time under soil specimen confinement, The test results indicated that discharge capacity decreases with increasing load, time, and hydraulic gradient. With load application, the cross-sectional area of the drainage channel of PVD decreases because the filter of PVD is pressed into the core. The discharge capacity of the soft marine clay-confined PVDs is much lower than that of the dredged soil-confined PVDs.

  • Earthquakes over 5.0 on the Richter scale have recently occurred in Korea, which has led to interest in the seismic safety of structures. If a water storage facility is damaged by an earthquake, the water could leak, and the insufficient water would make fire suppression difficult. Therefore, a water storage facility should satisfy safety requirements for earthquakes. In this study, the seismic performance of a water tank was improved by installing a lead rubber bearing between the foundation and the tank. It designed the lead rubber bearing available to the existed concrete foundation. ANSYS was used for modeling to consider the interaction between the fluid and structure of the tank and the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressure using four seismic waves. In the case of hydrostatic pressure at 2.5 water level, full level, the same stress appeared irrespective of whether the seismic isolation was installed. When hydrostatic pressure and hydrodynamic pressures are applied at the same time, the seismic-isolated water tank showed less seismic force, and the damping ratio was lower than that of general seismic isolation. This occurred because the weight of the water tank is much smaller than the stiffness of the seismic isolation. The result is expected to be used for further research on seismic capacity evaluation for water tanks.

  • This study used Navier-Stokes Solver(LES-WASS-2D) for analyzing hydrodynamic characteristics with high order in order to analyze self-burial mechanism of pipeline with spoiler under steady flow. For the validity and effectiveness of numerical model used, it was compared and analyzed with the experiment to show flow characteristics around the pipeline with and without the spoiler. And the hydraulic(flow, vortex, and pressure) and force characteristics were numerically analyzed around the pipeline according to the incident velocity, and shape and arrangement of spoiler. Primarily, if the spoiler is attached to the pipeline, the projected area is increased resulting in higher flow velocity toward the back and strong vortex caused by wake stream in the back. Secondly, the spoiler causes vertically asymmetric flow and vorticity fields and thus asymmetric pressure field. It increases the asymmetry of force on the pipe and thus develops large downward fluid force. Both of them are the causes of selfburying of the pipeline with spoiler.
