  • Identifying characteristics of heating and cooling systems requires estimation of thermal load of specific time interval, especially in cases that its system is operated intermittently, by using thermal storage, of in a partial load condition. Estimating the thermal load, however, needs to forecast hourly weather data variation. Hence, this paper attempts to examine characteristics of hourly ourdoor temperature variation as a preliminary research for the mathematical modeling of the hourly weather variation. Speculating characteristics of daily minimum and maximum temperature occurances, hourly outdoor temperature variation, and daily temperature differences in the increasing range ($07h{\sim}15h$) and decreasing range($15h{\sim}07h$), we were able to analyze changing patterns of daily temperature differences in each range in terms of daily solar amount, cloud ratio, and other weather data. Results from the multiple regression analysis enables us to conclude that daily differences in the increasing range are strongly affected last night temperature itself while the other range's differences are influenced by many weather data, which are solar amount, the variation of cloud, and the maximum temperature of the previous day.

  • Mallipo is a representative beach contaminated by Hebei Spirit oil spill accident in December 2007. This study aims to compare the differences of two seasons (winter and summer) for the spatio-temporal variation patterns of oiling status in the whole area and divided five regions of Mallipo beach. In the whole area, the decreasing rate of average TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) in winter was twice greater than summer during four years. According to the spatial variation pattern analysis of oiling status using weighted mean center and weighted standard distance, the oil concentration was clustered on southwestern region in winter, however, the TPH was dispersed in the whole area in summer. Temporal variation pattern of TPH in each of Mallipo's five regions showed that TPH had been consistently decreased in winter, but oil concentration had not been changed in summer since 2009 except the southwestern region. Therefore, in order to evaluate and predict the progress of oiling status, it is needed to analyze the spatio-temporal variation pattern of TPH using spatial analysis after separating data into seasons (e.g., winter and summer). In addition, time series analysis is useful in the regional scales through spatial partitioning rather than the whole beach area for the understanding of temporal variation pattern.

  • This study was conducted to determine the influences of winter and summer pruning on the yield and fruit quality in southern highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. hybrid) cv. 'Misty'. The 5-year-old southern highbush blueberry 'Misty' were used. The pruning treatments were as follows: 1) control (no pruning), 2) winter pruning (30% removed), and 3) winter pruning + summer pruning (Aug. 5). Fruits harvested for six times over the harvest season and measured yields, unmarketable fruit (defected and immature fruit), changes of each fruit weight and analyzed fruit characteristics, such as total sugar, total anthocyanin contents and total phenolic contents. The differential pruning treatments were not significant for fruit yields of southern highbush 'Misty'. No pruning treatment showed regular yields after the 2nd harvest, but the other pruning treatments were appeared that fruit yields were more concentrated on the 2nd~4th harvest time. Total sugar and total phenolic contents were observed the highest at the 4th time among the harvest period. No pruning treatment showed the highest unmarketable fruit yield at 57%, however, that of winter pruning and winter + summer pruning treatment occurred at 26%, 31%, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to find out the effects of meterological factors on oceanic conditions when cold and dry continental air mass passes through the western sea of Korea The change of ocean conditions during the winter season were more obvious in coastal area than open sea And sea surface temperature (SST) during February is lower by $3^{\circ}C$ than December but in coastal area SST dropped by $3^{\circ}C$. As for the salinity, there was not much difference between areas except southern area of Mokpo. In the coastal regions, air temperature(AT) and SST showed a positive correlation; as the air temperature goes up with the increase of SST and when the former goes down the latter decrease. SST of open sea seems to be changed by latent (Qe) and sensible heat (Qs), when the open sea lose its heat by Qe and Qs then SST goes down And when they get the heat then the SST goes up. 1here was a positive correlation between the AT of the coastal region and sea surface salinity (SSS), when the AT goes up then SSS increase and when the former goes down the latter decrease. Precipitation during the summer seasons (June$\sim$September) appeared to the more closely related with salinity of February of the following year than those of October and December.

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze the factors affecting the structural changes of agricultural land use in Gyeongsangnam-do and to prospect for its future use. Seven commodity groups are categorized to include all agricultural products: rice, summer food crops, summer vegetables and other cash crops, fruits, barley, winter field vegetables, and winter greenhouse vegetables. We developed a model for acreage distribution among the seven commodity groups, and estimated the economic relations between prices and acreage distribution. The results showed positive relations exist between cultivating acreage and own commodity prices in all commodity groups, whereas competitive relations exist between summer commodity groups or winter commodity groups such that rice price decreases led to increases of fruits cultivating acreage or vice versa and winter vegetable price increases led to increases of winter greenhouse vegetables cultivating acreage or vice versa. Further, acreage elasticities with respect to own commodity prices or farm wage rates are estimated over the last 30 years, and future agricultural land use in Gyeongsangnam-do is prospected based on three different scenarios. Total agricultural land use in Gyeongsangnam-do will be decreased over the next 10 years from 159,000 ha in year 2010 to 143,000~153,000 ha in year 2020. By commodity group, cultivating acreage of rice, summer food crops, and barley will be decreased while cultivating acreage of summer vegetables, fruits, winter field vegetables, and winter greenhouse vegetables will be stagnant.

  • This experiment was conducted to elucidate the proper suppling frequency of nutrient solution for grafted cactus Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii grown hydroponically without medium. Grafted cactus seedlings were planted onto the cultivation bed without medium, using labor-saving tray. The treatments like 1, 3, 5 and 7 times of nutrient solution supply per day and continuous soaking of plant root in the nutrient solution during the daytime were tested in summer and winter season. The growth of grafted cactus was worst in the treatment of one time supply of nutrient solution per day, and there were not significant difference in growth of grafted cactus among other treatments both in summer and winter season. 17.6% of grafted cactus seedlings failed to rooting in the treatment of one time supply of nutrient solution per day in winter season. The proper suppling frequency of nutrient solution, for the grafted cactus Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii grown hydroponically without medium, was three times supply of nutrient solution per day both in summer and winter seasons considering growth and rooting of plants.

  • This study was carried out to investigate effect of low temperature and $GA_3$ treatment on flowering and cut flower yield of Limonium spp. 'Ocean Blue' and 'Fantasia' in summer and winter cultivations. Plants were kept at $3^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks, and were treated with a foliar spray of $400mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ $GA_3$ at seven weeks after transplanting in both seasons. The effect of low temperature $3^{\circ}C$ for two weeks $GA_3$ application was tested only in winter. In summer cultivation, 'Ocean Blue' and 'Fantasia' of cut flower production by low temperature treatment were increased about 16% and 53%, respectively, while bolting and flowering advanced significantly in 'Ocean Blue' as compared to those in the control. In winter cultivation, growth and development increased, especially, in 'Fantasia'. With low temperature treatment to 'Fantasia' for 4 weeks, cut flower production was increased about 35%. In addition, bolting and flowering were hastened by about 20 and 10 days, respectively. Combined treatment of low temperature and $GA_3$ advanced bolting and flowering with little difference among the cultivars, while, in 'Fantasia' it shortened days to flowering and produced more and best quality flowers as compared to the other treatments and the control.

  • Nutrient balance is an environmental indicator for assessing the potential of sustainable agriculture. Improving the use of arable land is crucial for reducing the nutrient balance. This study monitored soil water content, seepage water, crop growth, and nutrient balance in weighing lysimeters during forage barley (Hordeum vulgare L., "Yeongyang") cultivation from October to April. The study was conducted from 2020 to 2022, and the treatments included forage barley cultivation (clay loam, CL-FC; sandy loam, SL-FC) and bare soils. During the regeneration period (March to April), the soil moisture contents of bare and forage barley-cultivated soils were approximately 30-40% and 18.1-21.8%, respectively. The daily evapotranspiration of forage barley was 6.09 mm. The nitrogen balances for SL-FC and CL-FC were -0.43 to -2.93 g m-2 and -0.79 to 0.75 g m-2, respectively, which can be attributed to the higher nutrient uptake of forage barley in SL-FC than in CL-FC. Consequently, the forage barley cultivation in SL-FC can potentially reduce nutrient leaching during the spring rainy season. Furthermore, nutrient balance can be reduced by cultivating forage crops during the winter season.

  • The Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW) is formed by cold and dry wind in the previous winter, and is known to spread southward along the central trough of the Yellow Sea in summer. Water characteristics of the YSCW and its movement in the northern East China Sea (ECS) are investigated by analyzing CTD (conductivity-Temperature-Depth) data collected from summertime hydrographic surveys between 2003 and 2009. By water mass analysis, we newly define the North Western Cold Water (NWCW) as a cold water mass observed in the study area. It is characterized by temperature below $13.2^{\circ}C$, salinity of 32.6~33.7 psu, and density (${\sigma}_t$) of 24.7~25.5. The NWCW appears to flow southward at about a speed less than 2 cm/s according to the geostrophic calculation. The newly defined NWCW shows an interannual variation in the range of temperature and occupied area, which is in close relation with the sea surface temperature (SST) over the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea in the previous winter season. The winter SST is determined by winter air temperature, which shows a high correlation with the winter-mean Arctic Oscillation (AO) index. The negative winter-mean AO causes the low winter SST over the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, resulting in the summertime expansion and lower temperature of the NWCW in the study area. This study shows a dynamic relation among the winter-mean AO index, SST, and NWCW, which helps to predict the movement of NWCW in the northern ECS in summer.
