In seasonal frozen areas which have a temperature difference in the winter and spring season like south korea, if stiffness reduction by repeated freezing and thawing occurs to slopes adjacent to private facilities or mountain slopes, safety factor is insufficient to design criteria and landslide could be occurs due to rainfall or snowfall. It can lead to large damage of human life and property. In this study, in order to examine the safety changes of mountain slopes by repeated freezing and thawing, soil samples series of SP and SM by USCS distributed in surface soil of mountain slopes were collected for specimens. Through the direct shear test, the characterestics of frozen soil shear strength were analyzed and by utilizing numerical methods, chracteristics of strength reduction of weathered granite soil according to repeated action of freezing and thawing, changes in the stability of the slopes when applying freezing and thawing of the soil samples were examined. As a result, the maximum shear stress decreased approximately 10%, and slope stability analysis confirmed that required safety factor is less than compare with the non-frozen samples.
Characteristic behaviors of geo-structure during freezing and thawing process have to be understood based on fundamental knowledge on phase change in porous soil and interaction between soil and structure. Inversion analysis using published one-dimensional soil freezing tests was conducted to suggest a mechanical model to consider an effect of the ice saturation on Young's modulus. Silty soil was more sensitive to temperature than weathered granite soil and sand, and weathered granite soil was more affected by initial water saturation in stiffness decrease than silty soil. Numerical simulations on chilled gas pipeline showed that shielding effect from surrounding frozen zone around the pipe decreases impact from external load onto the pipe. And a pipe installed in sand backfill showed more heaving due to relatively low stiffness of sand during freezing than that of surrounding in-situ weather granite soil. However, it had more stable stress condition due to effective stress redistribution from external load.
Effects of presservation methods on viability and virulence of Xanthosmonas compestris pv. oryzae were investigated. The incidence of colony-type variants from freeze-dried and deep-frozen cultures was also determined. The suspending medium for freeze-dried cultures containing $10\%$ sucrose and $1\%$ gelatin showed the highest viability, and the virulence was well maintained in the suspending medium containing $2\%$ dextrin, $0.5\%$ ascorbic acid, 0.5% ammonium chloride, $0.5\%$ thiourea, and $0.85\%$ NaCl. Serially transferred cultures became attenuated. Rough colonies which had wrinkled surface occurred at a frequency of $1.9\%$ to $15.8\%$ during freeze-drying and freezing. The rough colonies consisted of nonseptated filamentous cells and rod-shaped cells. The virulence of rough colonies was weak as compared with the normal colony type.
It is well known that the native conformation of many proteins can be stabilized by carbohydrates or polyalcohols. However, the mechanism of the stabilization still remains unclear. In the present studies, to characterize the cryoprotective mechanism of corn starch enzyme hydrolysates on fish protin, solubility of hydrolysates, thermal behavior of hydrolysates and actomyosin solution, and enzyme kinetics in frozen system were investigated. The solubility of the hydrolysates increased with the increase in D.E. value. The $T_g^{'}$ of the hydrolysates were linearly correlated with D.E. value and the T-g value of the hydrolysates (D.E. 5,10,15,20) were reported to be $-7.2^{\circ}C\;-8.8^{\circ}C\;-11.9^{\circ}C$, and $-14.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. The results of enzyme experiments showed that the higher the D.E. value, the higher was the rate of reaction in frozen storage ($-12^{\circ}C$). It is found to support the cryostabilization mechanism that the hydrolysats act to enmesh the protein in a glass state where all deteriorative processes are greatly slowed down.
This paper presents the results of a reduced-scale physical model investigation into the behavior of retaining walls subject to cycles of freezing and thawing due to seasonal temperature change. Reduced-scale model walls equipped with a temperature control chamber that can simulate freezing and thawing conditions were first constructed and a series of tests were conducted with due consideration of different initial water contents of backfill soil and soil types. The results indicate that cycles of freezing and thawing process increase wall deformation as well as earth pressure acting on the wall. Also revealed was that the effect of the freezing and thawing cycles becomes more pronounced for cases with a larger initial water content and for soils with a larger fine content. Practical implications of the findings from this study are discussed in great detail.
In seasonal frozen areas with climatic features, which have a temperature difference in the winter and thawing season, changes of mechanical properties of the soil in the zone could be seen between the freezing and thawing surface. In particular, in soil with many fine particles, a softening of the roadbed usually occurs from frost and thawing actions. The lower bearing capacity is a rapidly progressive the softening of roadbed, and occurred a mud-pumping by repeated loading. In this study, the three kind of sandy soil with contents of fine particles were conducted by directly shear box test with the number of cyclic in freeze-thawing and the water content of soil. Subsequently, the relationship between the shear strength and freeze-thaw cycling time was obtained. The shear strength was decreased with the increase of the freeze-thaw cycling time. A shear stress deterioration of the soil with power function modal is proposal.
Freezing and thawing cycle is one of the major weathering-induced factors in the mechanical weathering of the rock mass. This natural process accelerates rock weathering process by breaking down the parent rock materials and makes soil or weathered rock formation in a rock slope surface zone. It can also cause reduction of the shear strength in slopes. It is important to calculate the deterioration depth caused by freezing-thawing for a slope stability analysis. In this study, deterioration depths of rock slope due to freezing-thawing were calculated using the 1-D heat conductivity equation. The temperature distribution analysis was also carried out using collected temperature distribution data for last five years of several major cities in Korea. The analysis was performed based on the distributed rock types in study areas. Thermal conductivities, specific heats and densities of the calculation rocks are tested in the laboratory. They are thermal properties of rocks as input parameters for calculating deterioration depths. Finally, the paper is showing the calculated deterioration depths of each rock type slopes in several major cities of Korea.
Today the application of antiwashout underwater concrete to the construction sites is increasing steadily, while its reliability is in issue. Particularly, antiwashout underwater concrete is known to have very weak durability on frost attack, and hence Japan society of civil engineers(JSCE) regulated that not to use of antiwashout underwater concrete where the freezing and thawing is suspected. This study aims the improvement of the freezing and thawing resistance for antiwashout underwater concrete. From the results of fundamental test, FA20 and SG50 showed good performance in fluidity and long term compressive strength than control concrete. Meanwhile, MK10 marked the highest compressive strength through the whole curing age but a defect on fluidity was discovered. The results from the repeated freezing and thawing test show that the large volumes of air entrapped by cellulose based antiwashout underwater admixture gave bad effects to frost durability and hence not much benefits were confirmed from the use of mineral admixtures. However there were some increasing effects on frost durability of MK10 and SG50 by securing $6{\pm}0.5\%$ of entraining air. In the meantime, there was a increasing tendency of frost durability by increasing blame's fineness of ground granulated blast furnace slag.

In this study, the effect of polypropylene fiber on the freeze-thaw damage of mortar was evaluated experimentally. The effects of the reinforcing of polypropylene fiber on the compressive and bending performance of mortar after 300 cycles of freeze-thaw test were evaluated by comparing the normal mortar and the mortar with polyvinyl alcohol fiber. In addition, the mass loss, relative dynamic elastic modulus, and cumulated pore volume of mortar were measured by each cycle of freeze-thaw test. As a result, it was confirmed that the fiber reinforced mortar, regardless of the fiber type, was effective not only in maintaining the performance of the compressive strength and the bending strength but also suppressing the mass loss after the freeze-thaw test of 300 cycles. Meanwhile, it was confirmed that not only polyvinyl alcohol fibers but also polypropylene fibers can effectively act to suppress the damage of the mortar by freeze-thaw. However, in order to improve the freeze-thaw resistance of mortar mixed with polypropylene fiber, it is necessary to increase the bonding performance with the cement matrix which can be expected from polyvinyl alcohol fiber.

Concrete structures can cause various problems as the number of common years increases when exposed to external extreme climate conditions. Among these problems, freezing and thawing occur due to the action of extreme climate factors such as heavy rain and heavy snow, which have become the most problematic in recent years. In this study, we present a rapid freezing and thawing test method of concrete in the air, referring to KS F 2456, as Seoul exhibits very dry weather during the period of freezing and thawing. Concrete test specimens and RC beams were fabricated to perform rapid freezing and thawing of 0, 100, 200, and 300 cycles, and the performance evaluation confirmed the degradation of each subject in material and member units. The design strength of 24 MPa, which performs rapid freezing and thawing in the air up to 300 cycles, decreases by 5.24 MPa (21%), and as rapid freezing and thawing in the air increases the stress burden on reinforced concrete bending members, reducing the energy absorption (dissipation) ability of structures due to earthquakes.
