  • The Reading Certification System is a form of reading education, a program in which homeroom teachers or librarians certify and reward students' reading and reading activities in order to raise motivation for reading. This study investigates and analyzes the management of the Reading Certification System in elementary school libraries in Gapyeong County, indicating problems and providing ways to resolve them by examining theories on school libraries' reading education and the Reading Certification System through a documentary survey and by conducting a survey of librarians and students on the categories of management, effectiveness, satisfaction levels, reading activities and reading motivation factors. An analysis of the survey results yielded the following suggestions for improvement: there should be a recommended books selection, a separate budget for a diverse reward system and more reading activities for students with low participation levels. I hope the results of this paper will be used as a reference when implementing the Reading Certification System in elementary schools, and that it will be an opportunity in changing perspective when applying the system.

  • The purpose of this research is to identify critical factors for facilitating school library reading programs and to develop guidelines for school library development. For this. relevant studies including several school library case studies were reviewed and analyzed. Also a survey was conducted for school library personnel. The survey findings showed that there was still lack of consensus on defining school library reading programs or school library use programs. Moreover, it is also found that in most cases school libraries neither have professional school librarians nor provide appropriate training to them. As a result it is recommended that for developing effective reading programs, school libraries need to fix the current problems and try to develop collection development plans for supporting reading programs, in cooperation with classroom teachers to develop library reading programs as a part of the curriculum. and ultimately with local public libraries.

  • The aim of this study is to explore the purpose and method of reading by examining relevant research from various academic fields. According to the reading theory in the Cho-seon Dynasty, reading was classified as either a way of gaining fame, becoming a gentle man, or solving problems. However, this views have been largely replaced by the belief that reading serves two main purposes: self-discipline and practical usage in this study (Confucian perspectives have been excluded from this approach). The traditional reading method, known as sukookdok-jeongsa, influenced by Chu-tzu's reading, emphasized a fluent reading and a deep reading. A fluent reading (sukookdok) method involved a reading aloud, memorizing, and a repeated reading for the literal decoding. After decoding, a deep reading (jeongsa) involved a reading while taking notes, a reading with reference and a repeated reading for the optimal comprehension. A fluent reading in the traditional reading theory is succeeded by 'a reading for liberal arts' and a deep reading is succeeded by 'a reading for learning'. The sukookdok-jeongsa's various reading methods are useful enough to apply to reading education in the school library. But 'a reading for fun' did not appear in the traditional reading theory.
