  • This article aims to investigate the change of theories of reading and its historical meaning in the later Joseon period. Three scholar who left major theories of reading are mainly analyzed for the sake of it. Park, Se-chae(1631-1695) was a Neo-Confucianist who had the theory of reading named Dokseo-Gungliron(讀書窮理論). It was totally based on the scheme of Neo-Confucianist instruction and concentrated on mastering the moral principles with relishing the sentences of the Confucian Canons. Jeong, Yak-yong(1762-1836) was a Practical learning scholar and then criticized the moral-centric theory of reading of Neo-Confucianism. He valued much of the Confucian Canons but also focused on erudite reading so as to enlarge practical knowledge. Hong, Gil-ju(1786-1841) was a stylist and presented a severe criticism against Neo-Confucianist theory of reading as much. He thought that what we could realize with reading are the principles of the individual, not of the whole. The change of theories of reading in the later Joseon period as above reveals us the fact that the intellectual history of that period was in the process of dynamical change.

  • The aim of this study is to explore the purpose and method of reading by examining relevant research from various academic fields. According to the reading theory in the Cho-seon Dynasty, reading was classified as either a way of gaining fame, becoming a gentle man, or solving problems. However, this views have been largely replaced by the belief that reading serves two main purposes: self-discipline and practical usage in this study (Confucian perspectives have been excluded from this approach). The traditional reading method, known as sukookdok-jeongsa, influenced by Chu-tzu's reading, emphasized a fluent reading and a deep reading. A fluent reading (sukookdok) method involved a reading aloud, memorizing, and a repeated reading for the literal decoding. After decoding, a deep reading (jeongsa) involved a reading while taking notes, a reading with reference and a repeated reading for the optimal comprehension. A fluent reading in the traditional reading theory is succeeded by 'a reading for liberal arts' and a deep reading is succeeded by 'a reading for learning'. The sukookdok-jeongsa's various reading methods are useful enough to apply to reading education in the school library. But 'a reading for fun' did not appear in the traditional reading theory.

This paper analyzed the following contents. First, this study explored the background meaning that emphasized children's reading in the 1920s and 30s and discussions on the establishment of a children's library. In the process, this study examined the relationship between the national movement during the Japanese colonial period and children's education, and the meaning of reading at the time. Second, in this study, the development of children's library movement that was actively developed at the time and a methodology of reading education presented through the reading section were reviewed. It was this period that everyone was more interested in children's reading education than ever before. In addition, as the children's library movement was actively developed, a number of "Sonyeon Mungo" was established in various places. Meanwhile, in the reading section of the newspaper, a number of teaching methods for reading at school and at home were published, and examples were presented through advanced overseas reading education model. From the results of this analysis, it can be seen that the 1920s and 30s were the period when the children's reading movement was actively developed.

  • T'oegye placed great emphasis on the cultivation of quiet-sitting. His idea of quiet-sitting, like Zhu Xi's, had various therapeutic effects as well. This can be highlighted as a real-life practice and a diverse application of the "abiding by Gyong" that he stressed; it is also associated with the treatment of physical diseases, composure in the mind, the benefits of reading, meditation in solitude, and many other areas. And We can easily infer that T'oegye would have set some premises before referring to Hualin Simbang. First, he would have been wary of quiet-sitting being the goal of cultivation: Too much obsession with and emphasis on Toinsul would actually obstruct the practice of "abiding by Gyong" and mislead one's effort for the "preservation and nourishment of the mind" and "reflection and examination." T'oegye would have probably used the physical and breathing exercises in Hualyin Simbang mainly as a reference to treat his physical illnesses. Also, his Toinsul would have been employed independently and partially as a sort of supplementary practice-without being used in parallel with quiet-sitting as one of the methods to achieve reverent seriousness.
