  • In the recent years, there has been attempts to try to understand the urban waterfront in diverse aspects. This article aims to understand basically the port-city's waterfront by the cultural interpretation of it in the basis of the concept of Water Culture. Water has the attribute that put down the border between inside and outside. This attribute of water leads to the attributes of Sea, such as dynamism, collectivity, and openness. The perimetric quality, openness, hybridity, and passage quality of the sea-port city's waterfront are resulted from these attributes of water and sea. These cultural attributes of urban waterfront exert a effect upon the residents' cultural identity of sea-port city. Thus the correlation between waterfront's attributes and the cultural identity should be reflected in the stage that its development is planned.

  • Recently, the number of design for open-spaces at waterfront, such as open-air restaurant and cafeteria, has been increasing to provide openness and natural environment of waterfront. However, when planning open-air restaurant and cafeteria, it is essential to investigate the climate characteristic of waterfront, especially wind environment, since the waterfront has a special quality of climate like low-temperature and strong wind which differs from downtown or inland In this study, wind environments of Haeundae, Suyoungrnan, and Gwanganli, the famous waterfronts in Busan, were investigated for design of open-air restaurants and open cafeterias. The main results were as follows. 1) the waterfront area of Haeundae, Suyoungman, and Gwanganli is suitable for open-air restaurant and open cafeterias; and 2) the appropriate period for open space in this area is from the end of March to November.

  • The waterfront has distinct climate characteristics different from urban or inland area. These may create not only the rise of energy and maintenance costs for facilities located at waterfront areas, but also the negative effects on the climate of the nearby inland area, unless these are treated with particular care. For the present study, the climate characteristics of waterfront were examined with climate data of 10 observation points carefully selected in Busan area. Each weather observation point was classified into either waterfront area of inland area, based on the distance from the coastal line. Special considerations were given to the climate data gathered at the Dae-Yeon weather station because it shows the climate characteristics similar to those of inland area, although it is located very near the waterfront area. Results indicates that this peculiar climate condition attributes, at least in part, to the reclamation of frontal coastal area.

  • This study aims at finding issues and ideas of waterfront planning through analysing planning concepts and characteristics of New York City Waterfront Comprehensive Plan(NYC WCP). The first NYC WCP in 1992 divided waterfront area as 4 functional areas which are natural, public, working and redeveloping waterfront. The characteristics of WCP in 1992 are zonning, height, setback, public access, visual corridor, floor area and so forth. After then NYC WCP revision in 2011 intergrated and developed the former plan through the eight visions which are expanding public access, enlivening the waterfront, improving water quality, restoring the natural waterfront, enhancing the Blue Network, improving government oversight and increasing climate resillience. In conclusion, NYC WCP successfully achieved both sufficient capacity of planning concepts and design guidelines for each region.

  • Ran Gang is a huge, attractive river which meanders through Seoul, the capital of South Korea. However, during the modernization of Seoul, the river gradually lost its natural beauty and healthy condition. Han Gang Renaissance is a project to upgrade the look of the Seoul waterfront, by overcoming this disaster and reorganizing the surroundings of Han Gang. This research articulates the design strategies and description of the prizewinning work of the International Design Competition for Yeouido Riverside Park that was linked to the Han Gang Renaissance Project. There are three key points that basically speak to the identity of the new waterfront, Yeouido Riverside Park. First, the current day Yeouido was recreated as an artificial island through the rapid expansion of the city and the initiation of the shore protection works. However, because it is the only island still remaining that shows the history of Han Gang, the park was designed to be the place which preserves the lyric of sand island and the emotional memory of riverside. Secondly, among the six districts of the Han Gang Renaissance Project, the two districts that are facing each other, Yongsan and Yeouido, are the central areas promoting international finance and business. Despite Yongsan's complete urban image, the exquisite harmony of pastoral scenes and skyscrapers of the Yeouido waterfront is presented to develop an active mutual relation with Yongsan. Lastly, this design scheme re-establishes the relationship between this competition's site, Yeouido Riverside Park, and a neighboring site, Yeouido Park.

Research into the quality of life in local and region scale is interesting both from the point of view of theory and practice, and has attracted much attention in the social sciences since the 1960s. This study is an attempt to examine the change of the quality of hie in the Integrated Yosu City. In the overall assessment of the level of satisfaction about the quality of life during the past five years, most of the respondents have positive evaluation of the changes of quality of urban life. In particular, the quality of living facilities, urban administration and convenience services has relatively improved during the past five years. On the other hand, the quality of physical environment. art and cultural opportunities, transportation options has been backward during the past five years. Therefore, the directions of urban development of the Integrated Yosu City may be summarized as follows: the establishment of a wide transportation network system, waterfront development, the activation of tourism industry and harbor works, the preparation of an urban landscape, the citizens'campaign for a community culture.

  • The reclaimed land has peculiar characteristic of nature environment unlike midtown or inland and also, in comparison with inland, has bad weather condition, such as low temperature, strong wind, excessive sunshine, and moisture involved in a salt. Therefore the case of developing water front needs understanding characteristic of weather environment mused by reclamation in detail and proper development and organized maintenance. If development which doesn't investigate topographic and climate characteristic sufficiently is drove ahead, a rise of expense for energy and maintenance is going to be mused by deteriorating weather environmental, occurring a flaw of facility and calculating inaccurate capacity of facility. We looked into the weather state and drew up the standard weather data of the newport area in Busan which is reclaiming and developing now. In this research at the base qf the standard weather data, we calculate the dynamic peak loads for commerce, business and residence and then we utilize the results of the load calculation as basic information to determine facility capacity in the rear city of the newport area.
