The purpose of this study is to exhibit the characteristics and changes of city network in China through the analyses railway structures and movement of passengers and goods in China. On the basis of accessibility analysis., central China area shows the highest level of accessibility, and it declines toward periphery areas. The center of City network was transfered from the central area to the east. Three main lines from north to south and the central status of main cities remain unchanged. The city network stratum structure of China can be divided into three levels. The first level is in a pattern of linear distribution within provices along main lines. The second level, shows a pattern of strengthened linear distribution and crossed influencial regions. The third level includes 5 areas.

The newly adopted Korea Geodetic Datum (a.k.a. KGD2002) calls for massive reengineering work on geospatial dataset. The main focus of our study is placed on the strategy and system implementations of the required data reengineering with a keen attention to integrated approaches to interoperability, standardization, and database utilization. Our reengineering strategy includes file-to-file, file-to-DB, DB-to-file, and DB-to-DB conversion for the coordinate transformation of KGD2002. In addition to the map formats of existing standards such as DXF and Shapefile, the newly recommended standards such as GML and SVG are also accommodated in our reengineering environment. These four types of standard format may be imported into and exported from spatial database via KGD2002 transformation component. The DB-to-DB conversion, in particular, includes not only intra-database conversion but also inter-database conversion between SDE/Oracle and Oracle Spatial. All these implementations were carried out in multiple computing environments: desktop and the Web. The feasibility test of our system shows that the coordinate differences between Bessel and GRS80 ellipsoid agree with the criteria presented in the existing researches.
This study aimed to measure street centralities with the street width, and to analyze their effects on the residential and non-residential land prices in Seoul, South Korea. Most of the studies on urban economics and policy focusing on the urban spatial structure have evolved in terms of their perspective from monocentric to polycentric models. Recently, their themes shifted to measuring street centralities and capturing their effects on urban phenomena. To expand the existing studies and discussion, this study analyzed the street centralities with the street width, and how they changed the land prices. Multilevel regression models generated a few key findings relevant to the relationship between street centralities and land prices. While a higher detour volume and closeness to wider streets commanded premium residential land prices, higher visibility and detour volume to wider streets were associated with higher non-residential land prices. These findings suggest a robust connection between street configuration and near-land prices. Thus, the results of this study suggest a few insightful policy implications for urban planners, urban designers, real estate developers, and appraisers.

This study, by focusing on the concept of accessibility to the central city, analyses its importance for understanding baward regions and aims to investigate a new spatial strategy for developing backward regions in Korea. The study investigates the EU accessibility case study and formulates the methodological framework for the analysis, which is applied to the case of Jeonnam-do and Gyeongbuk-do in order to evaluate the backwardness of the regions in terms of the accessibility to the central city. Finally, this paper discusses a new spatial strategy for developing backward regions based on the concept of the accessibility to the central city, which includes the creative expansion of rural public services and promoting efficient delivery system, improving public and private service provision through the accessibility to the central city and securing long-term development potential through investing in regional human capital.
This paper focuses upon the relationship between port and port city. The purpose of this study is to theoretically review the relationship between port and its city, and to identify crucial policy directions for mutual development of port and the backward city in the case of Gwangyang Port (GP), Korea. The contents of this paper consist of five main sections: introduction; a concept of port-port city relationship; an analysis of the relationship between GP and its city; policy directions for GP city; conclusion. This study was mainly conducted by a literature review of the papers/reports and the analysis of secondary data. Significant policy strategies are associated with development of value-added logistics, expansion of additional port business, vitalization of port hinterlands, and establishment of port logistics clusters in terms of port economic function. Green port operation, improvements of coastal environment, establishment of port waterfronts, and conceptual port redevelopment master plan are included in the major port city development strategies in terms of sustainable development. Another major port city development strategies contain major port city master plan, institutional arrangements for port city development, specialized port city development policy, and formation of free trade port city in relation to integrated port-port city planning and management.
This paper examined the changes of urban system through the network and the flow pattern reflected in daily movement in Korea. Because daily movement reflects trip pattern, urban system formed by inter-city linkages can be recognized in terms of living sphere. While population movements between cities have the number of linkage systems of city network and the number of traffic regions composed of the origin and destination has increased respectively. Nevertheless, spatial extent of Capital region and Busan region has been expanded. In Gangwon-do in which Seoul-oriented high-speed transportation network has developed, separation of living sphere between Yeongdong area and the Soyanggang cultural region formed around Chuncheon was intensified. Living sphere that includes Daejeon and the surrounding cities has been expanded to the southern Gyeonggi-do. The existing living sphere formed in Jeollanam-do was fragmented into the east and west around Mokpo and Suncheon due to the weakened centrality of Gwangju. Living spheres formed by spatial interaction were consistent with regional administrative boundary. Considering the increased interaction between Seoul and its surrounding cities, the development of global city-region centered on Seoul is expected.
The study aimed to analyze the structure of China's passenger railway network in the years of 2008, 2013, and 2018, respectively. At the same time, it tried to investigate its derivative impact on the patterns of Chinese urban network. The analytical tool was based on the NetMiner4.0. In order to measure network characteristics of China's passenger railway network, it primarily focused on the degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and closeness centrality. First of all, the higher degree centralities, with a few exceptions, were observed in BeiJing, ShangHai, GuangZhou, WuHan, XiAn, ChengDu, HaErBin, and ShenYang over a decade. In contrast, the higher betweenness centralities were recorded in cities of higher development potential including WuLuMuQi, GuiYang, ShenYang, and KunMing. The closeness centrality analyses confirmed the fact that most metropoles like BeiJing, ShangHai, and GuangZhou kept the highest train accessibility during the same research period. At the same time, the opening up of a new stretch of high speed railway network has consecutively strengthened connectivity between BeiJing and TianJin. Owing to unprecedented development of railway traffic and its extensive operations, this study believes that Chinese major cities, without interruption, would pursue a series of urban policy alternatives geared towards railway stations-oriented networking and competitively try to extend their network ranges.

Restructuring urban land use patterns from the motor-oriented to transit-oriented ones is a contemporary trend in urban planning and transportation. It is expected that transforming urban land use patterns to be transit and walking friendly would resolve various urban problems such as heavy energy consumptions, air pollutions, and traffic congestions. Korean cities have much potentials for developing transit-oriented urban environments in terms of its density and civil service levels, but the level of transit usage levels and the environmental quality of cities are not good enough for supporting such transition. The purpose of this study is to analyze the urban transit center areas and identify the problems to be solved to create transit-oriented urban environments. Case studies of four urban transit center areas in Seoul Metropolitan region were conducted to examine the spatial characteristics of urban transit center areas and identify their problems. Development density, land use diversity, walk-ability and transit connectivity were the primary feature of interests.
