  • It is an established fact that the university library is an important element in the higher education system. To keep abreast with the changing social environment industrial development and explosive increase of knowledge, the university library must also find new a n.0, pproaches to better serve the users in the university community. Also, on the part of university faculty, instructional methods must be improved from text book oriented education toward assignment oriented education. To facilitate effective teaching, the role of university library and its efficient use has become more important and indispensable. The objective of this study was to review the literature, and to find out current practice among students and professional librarians on the library instruction in order to find ways to strengthen and improve it. A specially designed questionnaire was used to survey current status. Results of the survey are summarized as follows; (1) Most university students received some guidance on library utilization as part of their freshman orientation program. However, it is found that the elementary nature of the guidance program was insufficient for their subsequent actual attempt to use. Students are not familiar with library organization, search procedure, and they lack basic knowledge on library service available to them. (2) Problem areas related to library instruction are insufficient amount of time allocated for the guidance program, big size of orientation program, and lack of interest on the part of students, etc. It is therefore recommended that the above mentioned problem areas be overcome through cooperative and concerted efforts among faculty members, professional librarians, and the university administration by increasing library instruction hours, improving the contents of program in its scope and depth to be practically useful. To sum up, the lecture oriented education should be shifted toward library oriented education by improved instruction program on library use.

The indicators are comprised by 3 major sections, subdivided into 35 sub-indexes. Each of indicators is scored according to the weights derived from the AHP survey to the related researchers and the practitioners. As a result, total score of 1,000 is distributed to 3 major sections of operational strategy section (190), operational systems section (440), and operational outcomes (370). Based on the evaluation indicators, measure dictionary is developed, followed by preliminary tests both by the parent organization and by each centers, in order to check the feasibility of the measurement.

  • As a part of the status report of all the libraries of Gyeong Buk Province, the libraries of the higher educational institutions in the province were first examined in this study. The following methods were employed for this investigation: 1) questionnaires were sent to the libraries to gather necessary data and 2) the library standards as set by the government were applied for the analysis of the data and other related statistical studies and reports were consulted. Eighteen libraries in the 22 higher educational institutions in the province were examined as of August 1974. For the convenience of the study, the 18 libraries were classified into the following four categories: four-year college library, two-year normal school library, two-year junior college library, and three-year nursing school library. Paul Buck contends that the library is the center of academic life and that the quality higher education is not possible without a quality library. This is so because all the research activities have to be supported by good library facilities. Moreover it is difficult to justify the raison d'etre of an academic community if there is no active research activities in it. If the proposition is accepted that the library plays one of the most important roles in research and that research is one of the most important aspects of an academic community, it cannot be helped but observe that the role the libraries in the province play today is irregular and is far from the educational ideals the higher educational institutions envisage. The present study revealed that there was not a single library in the province which could truly support the research and classroom activities of the higher educational institutions. The college and the normal school libraries, nonetheless, had some facilities to be analyzed. The nursing school and the junior college libraries unfortunately had virtually nothing. It is hoped on the basis of the present study that the libraries should reorganize themselves and look for new directions for active support of research activities.

  • This study examined the frequency, format, and activity of Internet references of four major journals in Library and Information Science in Korea. Sampled articles of each journal were published during 2002-2009. The results show five implications. 1) Overall 15.5% of all references were Internet references. 2) The number of Internet references has continuously increased since 2002. 3) The type of Internet references were most commonly "web document(84.3%), followed by" PDF(14%). 4) Nearly 55% of Internet reference were ".or(org)" and ".ac(edu))". 5) The percentage of inactive Internet references increased from 34.4% at 3 years to 44.1% at 5 years and to 53.3% at 10 years after publication. Although this study may not be representative of the entire field, it shows that Internet references occurred frequently and were often inaccessible within years after publication.

  • Througout the literature, various opinions and recommendations are presented concerning educational backgrounds for subject specialist librarianship. However, the Korean library and information science education is designed as the college program, and n, utilization of either minor or double major programs is regarded as the best to produce qualified subject specialist librarians. Nevertheless, the courses in the library and information science should be promoted first. Accordingly, this study starts with the assumption that the subject bibliography course in the library and information science is designed directly or indirectly to educate students as subject specialist librarians. For this, law and law firm library were explored as examples, and then, finally a law bibliography was provided for the training of the law specialist librarians.

  • Using Spradley's ethnographic method, the study was designed to describe and understand the factors contributing to the occupational socialization of librarians. Three in-depth interviews and one observation were conducted with each of the sixteen participants who have practiced for longer than 5 years in libraries and were selected by theoretical sampling. Eight factors emerged from the data: education in universities, social changes, work, human relationships, users, the library organizational climate, social perception, and striving to enhance the professional. 'Overcoming a lack of understanding about the profession' was the cultural theme for describing and integrating the factors contributing to the occupational socialization of librarians.

  • This exploratory study reports how teacher-librarians perceive their roles as practitioners in school library media programs. Conducted within the framework of qualitative research, the study employed a focus group interview (Morgan 1997) with five teacher-librarians at elementary school level in Seoul. The findings suggest: (1) the roles of teacher-librarians are influenced a great deal by many factors in educational systems; (2) there is no consensus on how to define and perform their role as teachers; (3) there seems to be increasing emphasis on their program administrator's role; (4) there is no consensus on prioritizing the five roles suggested by the AASL (2009), but all the participants agreed that the leader's role is most crucial for the success of pursuing the rest of the roles, and (5) there seems to be no clear boundaries as teacher-librarians perform their roles. Putting all the results together, the researcher was able to conclude that teacher-librarians are frequently asked to be flexible and negotiable and have great burden in the affective, cognitive, and physical realm for the roles imposed and expected of them.

  • This study aims to understand the information needs and behaviors of university members given the societal shifts incited by the fourth industrial revolution as well as the changes in university research and education. We first conducted several in-depth interviews with diverse university members, and then adopted interpretative phenomenological analysis(IPA) to search the university members' information needs and behaviors including the contexts for such needs. The interviewees demonstrated more complex and convergent information needs than traditional information needs. They had very individualized information needs according their particular situations and took integrated problem-solving methods through their personal networks and/or making their own communities. When the interviewees' information needs were not satisfied by libraries, they tended to show low awareness of the libraries.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of the creative writing program that is one of the practical strategy of information literacy on self-directed learning abilities of elementary school students. According to the results, this program raise the average score of 33.69 points from 130.14 to 163.83 significantly in their self-directed learning abilities. Among the specific abilities of them, this program affects learning planning and evaluation capability meaningfully. But the long term continuous of learning executive is not changed significantly by this program. As the results of after interview with the students who take part in this program, the most of them respond that they could reduce their fear of writing and apply the reading and writing strategies to other subjects. So, if we teach this program with subjects consistently and use the learning strategies of information literacy, we could improve the long term continuous of learning executive.
