A Development of Road Crack Detection System Using Deep Learning-based Segmentation and Object Detection (딥러닝 기반의 분할과 객체탐지를 활용한 도로균열 탐지시스템 개발)

  • Many recent studies on deep learning-based road crack detection have shown significantly more improved performances than previous works using algorithm-based conventional approaches. However, many deep learning-based studies are still focused on classifying the types of cracks. The classification of crack types is highly anticipated in that it can improve the crack detection process, which is currently relying on manual intervention. However, it is essential to calculate the severity of the cracks as well as identifying the type of cracks in actual pavement maintenance planning, but studies related to road crack detection have not progressed enough to automated calculation of the severity of cracks. In order to calculate the severity of the crack, the type of crack and the area of the crack in the image must be identified together. This study deals with a method of using Mobilenet-SSD that is deep learning-based object detection techniques to effectively automate the simultaneous detection of crack types and crack areas. To improve the accuracy of object-detection for road cracks, several experiments were conducted to combine the U-Net for automatic segmentation of input image and object-detection model, and the results were summarized. As a result, image masking with U-Net is able to maximize object-detection performance with 0.9315 mAP value. While referring the results of this study, it is expected that the automation of the crack detection functionality on pave management system can be further enhanced.

A Study on Crack Detection in Asphalt Road Pavement Using Small Deep Learning (스몰 딥러닝을 이용한 아스팔트 도로 포장의 균열 탐지에 관한 연구)

  • Cracks in asphalt pavement occur due to changes in weather or impact from vehicles, and if cracks are left unattended, the life of the pavement may be shortened, and various accidents may occur. Therefore, studies have been conducted to detect cracks through images in order to quickly detect cracks in the asphalt pavement automatically and perform maintenance activity. Recent studies adopt machine-learning models for detecting cracks in asphalt road pavement using a Convolutional Neural Network. However, their practical use is limited because they require high-performance computing power. Therefore, this paper proposes a framework for detecting cracks in asphalt road pavement by applying a small deep learning model applicable to mobile devices. The small deep learning model proposed through the case study was compared with general deep learning models, and although it was a model with relatively few parameters, it showed similar performance to general deep learning models. The developed model is expected to be embedded and used in mobile devices or IoT for crack detection in asphalt pavement.

Detection Method for Road Pavement Defect of UAV Imagery Based on Computer Vision (컴퓨터 비전 기반 UAV 영상의 도로표면 결함탐지 방안)

  • Cracks on the asphalt road surface can affect the speed of the car, the consumption of fuel, the ride quality of the road, and the durability of the road surface. Such cracks in roads can lead to very dangerous consequences for long periods of time. To prevent such risks, it is necessary to identify cracks and take appropriate action. It takes too much time and money to do it. Also, it is difficult to use expensive laser equipment vehicles for initial cost and equipment operation. In this paper, we propose an effective detection method of road surface defect using ROI (Region of Interest) setting and cany edge detection method using UAV image. The results of this study can be presented as efficient method for road surface flaw detection and maintenance using UAV. In addition, it can be used to detect cracks such as various buildings and civil engineering structures such as buildings, outer walls, large-scale storage tanks other than roads, and cost reduction effect can be expected.

Road Crack Detection based on Object Detection Algorithm using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Image (드론영상을 이용한 물체탐지알고리즘 기반 도로균열탐지)

  • This paper proposes a new methodology to recognize cracks on asphalt road surfaces using the image data obtained with drones. The target section was Yuseong-daero, the main highway of Daejeon. Furthermore, two object detection algorithms, such as Tiny-YOLO-V2 and Faster-RCNN, were used to recognize cracks on road surfaces, classify the crack types, and compare the experimental results. As a result, mean average precision of Faster-RCNN and Tiny-YOLO-V2 was 71% and 33%, respectively. The Faster-RCNN algorithm, 2Stage Detection, showed better performance in identifying and separating road surface cracks than the Yolo algorithm, 1Stage Detection. In the future, it will be possible to prepare a plan for building an infrastructure asset-management system using drones and AI crack detection systems. An efficient and economical road-maintenance decision-support system will be established and an operating environment will be produced.

Development of Crack Detection System for Highway Tunnels using Imaging Device and Deep Learning (영상장비와 딥러닝을 이용한 고속도로 터널 균열 탐지 시스템 개발)

  • In order to efficiently inspect rapidly increasing old tunnels in many well-developed countries, many inspection methodologies have been proposed using imaging equipment and image processing. However, most of the existing methodologies evaluated their performance on a clean concrete surface with a limited area where other objects do not exist. Therefore, this paper proposes a 6-step framework for tunnel crack detection deep learning model development. The proposed method is mainly based on negative sample (non-crack object) training and Cascade Mask R-CNN. The proposed framework consists of six steps: searching for cracks in images captured from real tunnels, labeling cracks in pixel level, training a deep learning model, collecting non-crack objects, retraining the deep learning model with the collected non-crack objects, and constructing final training dataset. To implement the proposed framework, Cascade Mask R-CNN, an instance segmentation model, was trained with 1561 general crack images and 206 non-crack images. In order to examine the applicability of the trained model to the real-world tunnel crack detection, field testing is conducted on tunnel spans with a length of about 200m where electric wires and lights are prevalent. In the experimental result, the trained model showed 99% precision and 92% recall, which shows the excellent field applicability of the proposed framework.

Deep Learning Models for Autonomous Crack Detection System (자동화 균열 탐지 시스템을 위한 딥러닝 모델에 관한 연구)

  • Cracks affect the robustness of infrastructures such as buildings, bridge, pavement, and pipelines. This paper presents an automated crack detection system which detect cracks in diverse surfaces. We first constructed the combined crack dataset, consists of multiple crack datasets in diverse domains presented in prior studies. Then, state-of-the-art deep learning models in computer vision tasks including VGG, ResNet, WideResNet, ResNeXt, DenseNet, and EfficientNet, were used to validate the performance of crack detection. We divided the combined dataset into train (80%) and test set (20%) to evaluate the employed models. DenseNet121 showed the highest accuracy at 96.20% with relatively low number of parameters compared to other models. Based on the validation procedures of the advanced deep learning models in crack detection task, we shed light on the cost-effective automated crack detection system which can be applied to different surfaces and structures with low computing resources.

Development of Deep Learning Model for Detecting Road Cracks Based on Drone Image Data (드론 촬영 이미지 데이터를 기반으로 한 도로 균열 탐지 딥러닝 모델 개발)

  • Drones are used in various fields, including land survey, transportation, forestry/agriculture, marine, environment, disaster prevention, water resources, cultural assets, and construction, as their industrial importance and market size have increased. In this study, image data for deep learning was collected using a mavic3 drone capturing images at a shooting altitude was 20 m with ×7 magnification. Swin Transformer and UperNet were employed as the backbone and architecture of the deep learning model. About 800 sheets of labeled data were augmented to increase the amount of data. The learning process encompassed three rounds. The Cross-Entropy loss function was used in the first and second learning; the Tversky loss function was used in the third learning. In the future, when the crack detection model is advanced through convergence with the Internet of Things (IoT) through additional research, it will be possible to detect patching or potholes. In addition, it is expected that real-time detection tasks of drones can quickly secure the detection of pavement maintenance sections.

  • 건축물 안전 점검은 대부분 전문가의 현장 방문을 통한 육안검사다. 그중 균열 검사는 건물 위험도를 나타내는 중요한 지표로써 발생 위치, 진행성, 크기를 조사하는데, 최근 균열 조사 방식에 대해 객관성과 체계성을 보완할 딥러닝 개발이 활발하다. 그러나 균열 이미지는 외부 현장에 모양, 규모도 많은 종류라 도메인이 다양해야 하는데 대부분 제한된 환경과 실제적인 균열 검사와는 무관한 데이터로 구성되어 실효적이지 않다. 본 연구에서는 균열 조사에 적합하고 Wild 환경에 적용 가능한 POC 데이터셋을 소개한다. 기존 균열 공인 데이터셋 4종의 특징과 한계점을 분석을 토대로 고해상도 이미지로써 균열의 세부 특징을 담았고 균열 유사 환경과 조건들을 추가 촬영해 균열 검출에 강인하게 학습되도록 지향하였다. 정제 및 라벨링 작업을 거친 POC 데이터 셋은 균열 검출모델인 YOLO-v5으로 성능을 실험하였고, mAP(mean Average Precision) 75.5%로 높은 검출률을 보였다. POC 데이터셋으로 더욱 도메인에 적응적(Domain-adapted)인 인공지능 모델을 개발하여 건물, 댐, 교량 등 각종 대형 건축물에 대한 안전하고 효과적인 안전 관리 도구로써 활용할 것을 기대한다.

CycleGAN Based Translation Method between Asphalt and Concrete Crack Images for Data Augmentation (데이터 증강을 위한 순환 생성적 적대 신경망 기반의 아스팔트와 콘크리트 균열 영상 간의 변환 기법)

  • The safe use of a structure requires it to be maintained in an undamaged state. Thus, a typical factor that determines the safety of a structure is a crack in it. In addition, cracks are caused by various reasons, damage the structure in various ways, and exist in different shapes. Making matters worse, if these cracks are unattended, the risk of structural failure increases and proceeds to a catastrophe. Hence, recently, methods of checking structural damage using deep learning and computer vision technology have been introduced. These methods usually have the premise that there should be a large amount of training image data. However, the amount of training image data is always insufficient. Particularly, this insufficiency negatively affects the performance of deep learning crack detection algorithms. Hence, in this study, a method of augmenting crack image data based on the image translation technique was developed. In particular, this method obtained the crack image data for training a deep learning neural network model by transforming a specific case of a asphalt crack image into a concrete crack image or vice versa . Eventually, this method expected that a robust crack detection algorithm could be developed by increasing the diversity of its training data.

  • 포장 도로의 균열 또는 유실에 따라 발생하는 포트홀은 환경 변화에 따라 지속적으로 발생하며 이로 인한 교통사고도 지속적으로 발생한다. 포트홀 탐지를 위해 크게 3가지 방법들이 시도되고 있다. 그 중 이미지 처리를 이용한다. 포트홀은 내부에 깊이가 있으며 거친 질감을 가진다. 이러한 특성을 이용하여 포트홀을 탐지한다.
