  • Road design needs to ensure the economic justification and the preservation of nature by adapting road alignment to the natural terrain. Though current road design guideline only defines a flat and a mountainous terrain, classification including rolling terrain should be needed while considering the fact that about 25.8% of our land can be classified as rolling and the road design guideline of developed countries such as United States and Australia has a terrain classification including rolling in order to take a deep consideration on the natural environment. The study attempts to draw a criterion to classify the assumed three individual terrains in a quantitative way by using a index like the undulation of the original ground profile. The study carried out a case study based on a conceptual frame developed in the study as an approach to differentiate each terrain. As a result, the study suggests a criterion in that a flat terrain has less than 40 meters in the difference between the highest and the lowest point of original ground from 40 to 60 meters for rolling terrain, and greater than 60 meters for mountainous respectively.

  • According to "A guide Book to Highway Design", most road elements are chosen based on a certain design speed in order to ensure obtaining safe and smooth traffic operating. However, road safety in practical way is corelative to not only all element of roads but also road shape, for example, between straight line and curves line and between curved lines. Also, it is relates to alignments such as horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, and cross section. That is, the practical road design should be examined in both sides of 3 dimension and consecutiveness as the practical road is a 3-dimensional successive object. The paper presents a concept for acceleration to evaluate consistency of road considering actual road shape on 3-dimension. Acceleration of vehicle is influential to road consistency based on running state of vehicle and state of drivers. Especially, the magnitude of acceleration is a quite influential element to drivers. Based on above, the acceleration on each point 3-D road can be calculated and then displacement can be done. Computation of acceleration means total calculation on each axis.

  • The road safety depend on many road factors like vertical alignment, horizontal alignment and road cross section angle. These data are hardly to get with drawings, and the real data are differ from drawings because of road pavement overlay, etc. To get these data, so many time and cost are needed, moreover it is dangerous work in heavy traffic road. In this study we obtained the road safety data with RoSSAV(Road Safety Survey & Analysis Vehicle) of Korea Institute of Construction Technology in accordance with traffic flow, and make analysis of road safety with the vertical alignment, horizontal alignment and road cross section angle data. We derived the safety improvement method in Young-dong accident prone spot and described detail method in this paper.

  • Researches on method for quantitative analysis applied with decision-making in consideration of variation in risk factors based on GIS(Geographic Information System) concluded as follows. Firstly, by way of decision-making in consideration of variation in risk factors, quantitative analysis performed for the existing route was applied to the new route, which would bring about reliable criteria in route planning and basic design stage. Secondly, horizontal and vertical alignment were easily available out of GIS for relatively speedy design and analysis with three dimensional alignment by decision-making in route planning. Thirdly, automation of route alignment is possible by utilizing quantitative evaluation system established in this research so that a risk analysis can be carried out in a relatively short time. Therefore it will eventually contribute to further development of road design technology.

  • This paper proposes a robust lane detection algorithm for non-flat roads by combining a piecewise linear model and dynamic programming. Compared with other lane models, the piecewise linear model can represent 3D shapes of roads from the scenes acquired by monocular camera since it can form a curved surface through a set of planar road. To represent the real road, the planar roads are created by various angles and positions at each section. And dynamic programming determines an optimal combination of planar roads based on lane properties. Experiment results demonstrate the robustness of proposed algorithm against non-flat road, curved road, and camera vibration.

  • Mapping accurate spatial information is important for constructing three-dimensional (3D) spatial models and managing artificial facilities, and, especially, mapping road centerlines is necessary for constructing accurate road maps. This research developed a semi-automatic methodology for mapping road centerlines using the MMS(Mobile Mapping System) LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) point cloud as follows. First, the intensity image was generated from the given MMS LiDAR data through the interpolation method. Next, the line segments were extracted from the intensity image through the edge detection technique. Finally, the road centerline segments were manually selected among the extracted line segments. The statistical results showed that the generated road centerlines had 0.065 m overall accuracy but had some errors in the areas near road signs.

  • As the depletion of forests became more widespread due to the increase in the number of roads, the research was conducted on the relationship between temperature and humidity in the forests, assuming that the forests around the roads were affected. Through the forest monitoring, the temperature and humidity of coniferous forests and broadleaf forests in Sedong and Gongju areas were observed at three point of 10m, 20m and 30m from the road boundary to the inside of the forest, respectively. In Yeongdong area, for more reliable results, it was observed from the point of 0m, 10m, and 20m. During the study period, so it was expected the change in tree growth was small, the change of temperature and humidity inside the forest by the road was compared with the temperature and humidity from the road to the inside of the forest from September 2017 to January 2018, the changes of temperature and humidity inside the forest due to linear development such as roads were quantitatively analyzed. Using the HOBO data logger (MX2301, Onset Corp.), the temperature and humidity changes of each site were measured, and the average of the changes have been analyzed monthly. In the case of Gongju coniferous forests in September 2017, the average weekly temperature is $0.57^{\circ}C$ higher than the forest outside from the forest boundary and $1.23^{\circ}C$ higher than the inside of the forest, at night in November 2017, in Sedong broadleaf forests. That is, the ability to control the temperature and humidity of the forests along the road was larger and less variable as the distance from the road boundary to the inside of the forest increased. In this study, it is considered that the high degree of change in temperature and humidity of the forest and the surrounding area due to artificial linear development such as roads will affect the growth of trees. This results could serve as a basis for studying the quantitative scope of linear development affecting forest growth and for managing forest change caused by linear development.

  • While driving a highway, A driver gets lots of information through geometrical structure, traffic situation, signs on the road. He gets most of the information by visual sense. Acceleration or deceleration and driving direction depend on sight distance. Therefore, it's essential to secure a driver's sight distance for a safe drive. However, design guides of geometrical structure and sight distance suggest respective standards of horizontal and vertical alignment. They do not indicate quantitative standard of combined alignment. Currently, element separated on a two-dimensional projected plane are available, but they do not guarantee safe and pleasant design. I will use the existent model analysing three-dimensional sight distance through mathematical calculation and sort a variety of geometrical structure element and type. In these researches, we will look at how much three-dimensional sight distance is overestimated or underestimated compared to two-dimensional. I will develop a program which predicts traffic velocity on the curvature of two-lane provincial road. stopped sight distance and three-dimensional sight distance will be compared at a predicted drive velocity. I will suggest the way to evaluate road consistency.
