Determination of Highway Design Speed Based on Reclassification of Highway Functions and Terrain Types (기능 재분류와 지형특성을 이용한 도로 설계속도 적정화 방안)

  • Currently, design speed selection is chosen by highway function, terrain type and area type. But some standards in classifing highway function let designer decide design speed in an arbitrary manner and too rough a highway function classification system leads to a road function which can not reflect road design, and some ambiguity of terrain type leads to a road which can not reflect land use pattern. Highway design based on traffic volume level without considering area type can result high construction cost. This research paper provides new highway design standards which are based on the refinement of highway design speed selection procedure. The new design speed is summarized to be determined by a more detailed highway function, terrain type, and area type that were made considering South Korean characteristics. The new highway function is established by adopting highway function reclassification and design volumes and rural town center reclassification and new design standards for terrain type selection are developed in this research by analyzing South Korean GIS Data Base obtained over the national government offices.

National Highway's Design Criteria Based on Analysis of Functional Classification (일반국도의 수행 기능 분석에 의한 적정 설계기준 연구)

  • This study shows that a functional order relationship of national highways in rural areas, which provides the functional system as a principal and minor arterial highways, can be established by the use of statististics. As a result, the adequate functional design criteria of those highways are proposed on the basis of the traffic characteristics in those areas. According to those statistical studies, a function of national highways in the national road network is proved to form three categories broadly. Especially, the survey results based on the traffic characteristics on each road sections show that the initially constructed national highways can not provide an adequate functional role as the arterial highways in the studied areas. In order to operate the intended national highways functionally as the arterial highways, the functional design criteria of highways and the standard order of highway facilities based on the design traffic speed should be considered as an alternative.

  • One of the most important basic problems for developing the new techniques in the field of road landscape planting practices in Korea, is to clarify, analyse, and evaluate the existing technical level through actual field survey on the various kinds of planting techniques. This study is, therefore, aimed at the good grasp of detail essences of the existing level of road landscape planting techniques through field investigations of the executed sites. In this study, emphasized efforts are made to the detail analysis and systematic rearrangements of such main subjects as; 1) principles and functions of the road landscape planting techniques; 2) essential elements in planning of it; 3) advanced practices in execution of planting of it; 4) and improved methods in maintenance of plants and lands as an entire system of road landscape planting techniques. The road landscape planting techniques could be explained as the planting and landscaping practices to improve the road function through introduction of plants (green-environment) on and around the roads. The importances of these techniques have been recognized by the landscape architects and road engineers, and they also emphasize not on]y the establishment of road landscape features but also conservation of human's life environment by planting of suitable trees, shrubs, and other vegetations around the roads. It is essentially required to improve the present p]anting practices for establishment of the beautiful road landscape features, specially in planning, design, execution, establishment, and maintenance of plantings of the environmental conservation belts, roadside trees, footpathes, median strips, traffic islands, interchanges, rest areas, and including the adjoining route roads.

  • 주간선도로의 ITS 사업 등 동적정보의 제공이 최근 도로이용자에게 제공되고 있으나, 지방부의 정적인 정보를 제공하는 도로표지는 아직도 안내기능이 취약한 것이 사실이다. 지방부 도로를 대표하는 지방도는 연장에 있어서 모든 도로를 통해서 최장이며 고속국도, 국도, 국가지원지방도와 함께 복잡한 도로망을 형성하고 있다. 즉, 도로의 대종을 차지하는 지방도는 아직도 정적정보제공기반도 취약하다는 것이며, 증가하는 수요에도 불구하고 길 찾기의 기능이 가장 미흡한 도로가 지방도이다. 이러한 지방도의 경우 같은 위계의 지방도 간에도 노선연장 및 지역적 차이가 크며, 노선의 연속성 또한 미약하다. 이러한 지방도 도로안내체계의 문제를 해결하기 위해 본 연구에서는 노선별 적절한 안내지명을 선정하고, 선정된 지명을 통해 도로안내 및 표지간의 연계성을 유지하기 위한 도로표지시스템을 개발하는 것이 목적이다. 이동에 있어 중추적 기능을 수행하는 도로가 아닌 지방도는 장거리 통행을 위한 위계 높은 도로와의 연계가 필수적인 만큼 본 연구에서는 도로표지규칙의 지방도 안내지명 선정에 대한 선정원칙을 재검토하고, 지방도의 적절한 안내지명 선정을 위해서 타 노선과의 연계유형을 분석하였다. 분석결과 9가지의 유형을 도출하였고, 도출된 노선연계 유형을 기반으로 노선별 거점을 선택하는 것으로 하였다. 한편, 안내지명에 대한 설문을 실시하였고, 그 결과 각 노선별 거점을 중요지와 주요지로 구분하여 정의, 선정하여 안내를 위한 기본 틀을 제시하였다. 제시된 안내지명서정요령 및 틀을 통해 지방도내의 및 지방도와 기타도로와의 연계성이 더욱 고조되고, 안내체계의 효율성의 증대가 기대된다.

  • Roadway construction planning processes involve a large amount of information on design, construction methods, quantities, unit costs, and production rates. GIS (Geographic Information System) is a strong tool for integration and managing various types of information such as spatial and non-spatial data required for roadway construction planning. This paper proposes a GIS-based system for improving roadway construction planning with its 'Spatial Analysis' and 'Visualization' functions. The proposed system cail help construction planner make a proper decision in a unique way by integrating design information and construction information within the system and creating design element modules for space scheduling purposes in real-time with its 'Interactive Planning' function.

  • This research attempts to develop 4D CAD function to support optimal road design by expanding the existing 4D CAD utilization system, which focused on construction phase, to the design phase. The functions such as earthwork simulation for selecting of road alignment, alternative route simulation and structure type simulation were suggested as functions to support road design. Through those virtual reality (VR) functions, visual confirmation of the condition of route and earthwork Is possible by the developed system, and an optimal alternative route can be selected by carrying out layout simulation of the alternative route. The functions presented in this research provide the decision making tools based virtual model for efficient support to road design.

Classification of Urban Arterial Roads Based on Traffic Characteristics (교통특성에 따른 도시간선도로 위계분류법)

  • Studies on classification of national roads have been continued, but there is little research on the classification of urban arterial roads. Due to the increase of traffic volume, urban arterial roads do not perform well as main roads. In this paper, the function of urban arterial road was established by using cluster analysis using traffic characteristics. Traffic characteristics such as traffic volume, weekend coefficient and speed coefficient were used to establish the functions of 55 main arterial roads in Seoul. The results of this paper are compared with those of the method using AADT. The method using AADT classifies the characteristics according to the traffic volume of the whole lane. In this paper, however, the results are derived using the traffic volume per lane reflecting the actual traffic volume. In addition, the functional classification of the arterial roads in Seoul was compared with the results of this paper to verify that the traffic characteristics were reflected. As a result, the method presented in this paper is more effective in showing traffic characteristics than the current highway functional classification method, and the functional classification system will be helpful for road extension and planning design.

Grouping method on functional classification for national highway (국도 기능 분류를 위한 그룹핑 방법론에 관한 연구)

  • 도로의 그룹핑(Grouping)이란 도고 계획, 설계, 관리, 조사 계획 및 정비 방침 등을 세우기 위해 유사한 성격의 도로 구간을 군집화하는 방법이다. 기존에 일반적으로 적용되고 있는 도로 그룹핑 방법은 그룹 수를 미리 지정함으써 분석가의 주관적 판단이 개입되었고, 그룹핑 변수 선정에 대한 근거가 부족하였다. 이에 본 연구에서는 기존에 일반적으로 적용되고 있는 도로 그룹핑 방법을 개선하여 새로운 방법론을 제시하였다. 또한 새로 제시된 방법론의 검증을 위해 도로 교통량 통계연보에서 제공하고 있는 일반국도의 2000년 294개 상시조사 지전의 교통량 자료를 이용하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과 기존의 월, 요일 변동계수만을 적용한 그룹핑 방법보다는 기타 교통지표(AADT, $\Sigma$K1000(K값의 상위 1000번 순위까지의 누적 값), 중차량 비율, 주야율)를 동시에 적용할 때 좀 더 효율적이면서 세부적으로 분류됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한 기타 교통지표론 적당한 그룹핑 결과로는 5그룹의 국도 기능 분류가 가능함을 알 수 있었다. 그 결과 기존의 소재지역과 기능에 따른 국토의 구분을 지방 산업도로 그룹, 지역 간선도로 그룹, 대도시 주변형 도로 그룹, 중소도시 주변형 및 관광도로 그룹, 관광도로 그룹으로 분류할 수 있었다. 본 연구에서의 도로 그룹핑 결과에 각 지역특성을 추가하여 분석한다면 도로의 계획, 선계, 관리 등에 매우 유용한 자료로 활용되리라 예상한다. 또한 본 연구의 결과를 이용하면 좀 더 효율적으로 설계시간계수 선정, 전역 조사 지점의 AADT추정, 상시 교통량 조사 자료의 누락 데이터 보정 및 교통량 조사의 스케줄링에 많이 활용할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
