Trams are rail vehicles that run on tracks along public, urban streets; they also sometimes run on separate rights of way. Tram vehicles run more efficiently and their overall operating costs are lower than those of similar vehicles. In general, trams provide a higher capacity service than buses. However, when tram stops in the middle of the road do not have pedestrian refuges, trams can cause speed reductions for other transport modes (buses, cars), as in such configurations other traffic cannot pass whilst passengers are alighting from or boarding the tram. In this study we examined the qualifications of overseas tram operation. The Railway Safety Act, sub-laws, and other relevant laws were examined to determine complementary measures.

This research addressed the problem of describing how the operating characteristics of passenger car and large vehicle differ qualitatively and quantitatively through the analysis of field survey data. A formulation that estimates passenger car equivalents used in this paper is derived by microscopic headway method. Regression analysis was used to focus on the effect of vehicle type on intervehicular spacings and the modeling technique for the statistical analysis was detailed.
Non-market valuation studies tend to assume that individual households have homogeneous preferences for a non-market good to value. However, since the preferences for non-market goods, especially environmental goods are more likely to be heterogeneous by nature, it may be more appropriate to assume heterogeneous preferences for non-market goods, which may in turn may lead to reduced biases in the WTP estimation. This study investigate the extent to which individual households have heterogeneous preferences for reduced concentrations of radon, a radioactive indoor air pollutant, for road safety, and for nuclear power safety. We also analyze the effect of heterogeneity assumption on the results of model and WTP estimation. Using the choice experiments and mixed logit models, we found that allowing for heterogeneous preferences improved model fitness and that there existed heterogeneous preferences for both reduced radon concentration and road safety, albeit not for nuclear power safety. The mean WTP for reduced radon concentrations and road safety increased by factors of 2.44 and l.74 respectively with the models allowing for heterogeneous preferences.

Traffic noise pollution is a growing problem that highly affects the health of people in urban areas. In order to implement effective measures against traffic noise the noise mapping about its distribution is imperative. Urban traffic noise maps will help to establish the existing baseline so that we will be able to look for the effective way to control the noise. They will also let us see in an understandable and visual way how noise spreads from roads into residential areas. In this paper we considered three development types between roads and residential areas, and applied the interpolation of ArcGIS for noise attenuation with distance from the roads to find the noise level at the parcels positions in residential areas, and then generated the noise map using the interpolated results. Therefore we present results that the traffic noise level within residential areas exceed the national noise standard and also can estimate the noise level of individual parcels. These results can be used for traffic noise control planning or assessment of officially assessed land price in near future.

In this paper we proposed and implemented an incident detection model which combines fuzzy algorithm and traffic pattern in order to enhance the efficiency of incident detection for the highways with lamps. Most of the existing algorithms dealt with highways without lamps and can not be used for detecting incidents in the highways with lamps. The data used for model building are traffic volume, occupancy, and speed data. They have been collected by a loop sensor at 5 minutes interval at a point in the Internal Circular Highway of Seoul for the period of 3 months. In this model, the three parameters collected by sensor were fuzzified and combined with the daily traffic pattern of the link. The test of efficiency of the propsed model was performed by comparing the result of proposed model with traditional APID algorithm and fuzzy algorithm without the pattern data respectively. The result showed significant amount of improvement in reducing the false incident detection rate by 18%.
A volume-delay function(VDF) has been used to describe the relation between traffic volumes and delay experienced by travelers on the roads traveling from origin to destination, which has been usually adopted in traffic assignment. For the purpose of more precise description of traffic pattern, we have to estimate the parameters of VDF in advance. This paper presents a methodology for estimating the parameters, which combined with golden section method. By using the method we have estimated the parameters with real data based on KTDB(2006), and validated them. Compared to the existing values of the parameters, newly estimated values are found to be closer to real world.

Most automated vehicle evaluation scenarios are developed based on the typical driving situations that automated vehicles will face. However, various situations occur during actual driving, and sometimes complex judgments are required. This study is to define a situation that requires complex judgment for safer driving of an automated vehicle as a dilemma situation, and to suggest a driving strategy necessary to secure driving safety in each situation. To this end, we defined dilemma situations based on the automated vehicle ethics guidelines, the criteria for recognition of error rate in automobile accidents, and suggestions from the automated vehicle developers. In addition, in the defined dilemma situations, the factors affecting movement for establishing driving strategies were explored, and the priorities of factors affecting driving according to the Road Traffic Act and driving strategies were derived accordingly.
Highway geometric design aims to provide drivers with safe and efficient road conditions. Highway design method of Korea doesn't consider demand characteristics of drivers, vehicles etc. Therefore there is a gap between designer's expectation and user's behavior and it hinders to make safer roads. It is required to develop the geometric design criteria and design method based on driving characteristics to provide safe and flexible design. This study suggested a geometric design method of horizontal curves on rural 4-lane highways based on speed distribution.
