An Improvement for Evaluating Load Carrying Capacity by Passing Vehicles of PSC-BOX Bridge (PSC박스 교량의 통행차량에 의한 내하력 평가기법 개선)

  • Load testing is an effective means in calculating the rating value of bridge. In Korea, load carrying capacity of bridge is modified by response modification factor that is determined from comparisons of measured values and analysis results. This paper presents the development of a method for determining the response modification factor, using traffic load. The proposed method is based on the results of computer simulations of traffic action effects. A comparison between the proposed method and the present method shows good agreement in estimating the modified load carrying capacity of bridges.

  • Chloride attach is one of the main factors which cause the deterioration of structures. In the case highway bridges, de-ice salts very significantly increase the surface scaling due to frost action. The deteriorated concrete is subject to experience degrading of durability under chloride attach environment. In this study, diagnosis report of 147 bridges is investigated and core sample of 21 bridge decks is examined and analyzed. The results show that the cover of decks concrete is required more than 8cm for retaining bridge lifetime over 30 years.

  • Technology that cannot be excluded from 4th industry is self-driving sector. The self-driving sector can be seen as a key set of technologies in the fourth industry, especially in the DB sector is getting more and more popular as a business. The DB, which was previously produced and managed in two dimensions, is now evolving into three dimensions. Among the data obtained by Mobile Mapping System () to produce the HD MAP necessary for self-driving, Point Cloud, which is LiDAR data, is used as a DB because it contains accurate location information. However, at present, it is not widely used as a base data for 3D modeling in addition to HD MAP production. In this study, MMS Point Cloud was used to extract facilities around the road and to overlay the location to expand the usability of Point Cloud. Building utility poles and communication poles DB from Point Cloud and comparing road name address base and location, it is believed that the accuracy of the location of the facility DB extracted from Point Cloud is also higher than the basic road name address of the road, It is necessary to study the expansion of the facility field sufficiently.

  • Evaluation of fuel consumption for the various road condition and vehicle type is necessary to perform the economic analysis of road construction which is important for the efficient design and management of road. Economic analysis of road should consider the social cost which can be divided into agency cost including initial construction expense, maintenance cost, and so on, and user cost consisting of vehicle operating cost, congestion cost, etc. Since vehicle operating cost depends on the traffic volume, fuel consumption that is a major part of vehicle operating cost will change by traffic volume as well. Fuel consumption is significantly affected by vehicle speed and road condition, especially the roughness. Thus, fuel consumption should be evaluated in terms of road condition, which is not currently considered. In this study, the estimation model of fuel consumption for the passenger cars in Korea has been developed by considering the road condition. First, the relationship between vehicle speed and fuel consumption that is used to calculate the vehicle operating cost for investment evaluation of transportation facility and the initial feasibility study of road construction was investigated. Second, with the consideration of road roughness, fuel consumption of the passenger car was measured. From the measurement, it was found that fuel consumption increased by $80m{\ell}$ per 100km driving as the roughness increased by 1m/km. Therefore, it is recommended that for the economic analysis of road design and management, the fuel consumption should be a function of road roughness.

  • Due to the increasing trend of operation and maintenance cost (O&M cost) of infrastructure, the accurate estimation of O&M cost is crucial part to the government. Recent literatures pointed out that gradual climate changes such as average temperature changes, average precipitation changes, and etc. have significant impact on infrastructure O&M cost. This research is intended to develop a long-term O&M cost prediction model of road facilities by considering the impacts of average temperature changes. For this end, the climate change scenarios of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s $5^{th}$ report are adopted to structure the impact of average temperature changes by using binomial lattice model. The proposed framework is expected to regional government in supporting decisions for road O&M cost.

  • The existence of rebound effect from road extension in Korea has been quantitatively verified using cross-sectional, time series data on four major cities - Seoul, Busan, Daegue and Incheon - between 2000 and 2013. The linear mixed effects model was constructed from six variables: total vehicle miles traveled (VMT), road extension, public transport users, gross regional domestic product (GRDP), regional population and fuel consumption. The main results can be summarized as VMT is positively correlated to road extension while negatively with public transport users. It indicates that the road extension-centered "supply-side" transportation policy induces "additional travel" and create "generated traffic" by enhancing driving efficiencies directly, or degrading other transport modes indirectly. Hence, the ultimate goal of road congestion reduction requires public transport-centered "demand management" rather than current supply-side policies.

  • 이상기후로 인해 전국적으로 국지성 집중호우의 발생빈도와 규모가 증가하고 있다. 건물 및 도로의 증가와 토지이용변화와 같이 도시화가 이루어진 지역에 배수체계의 용량을 초과하는 강우의 발생으로 도심지 내수침수의 피해가 늘어나고 있다. 본 연구에서는 건물과 도로가 많은 도심지에서의 내수침수 분석을 위하여 2017년 7월과 2020년 8월에 침수 피해가 발생한 봉명지구를 연구대상 지역으로 선정하였으며, 건물과 도로의 영향을 고려하기 위해 이를 반영한 지형자료를 구축하였다. 내수침수를 분석하기 위해 XP-SWMM 모형을 이용하였으며, 피해 발생 당시의 침수심과 침수범위가 나타난 침수범람도를 바탕으로 각 지형조건에 따른 내수침수 분석 결과를 비교·검토하였다. 분석 결과 각 지형조건 중 건물과 도로를 반영한 지형에서의 침수심과 침수범위가 실제 피해와 가장 유사하게 나타났으며 특히 건물이 밀집되어 있는 좁은 골목에서의 수위와 흐름속도는 다른 지형조건에서 보다 높고 빠르게 나타난 것을 확인하였다. 월류수는 도로를 따라 하류로 이동하여 하류부 침수심이 가중되는 것으로 확인되었다.

  • Operation and Maintenance in road infrastructure is repetitive carbon emissions activities to preserve the road in its originally constructed condition. In the view of road planning and construction, operation, and maintenance of life cycle, operation and maintenance stage quantification of carbon emissions is very important because it is easily accessible activities to reduce carbon emissions in road infrastructure that existing and new road. However, carbon emissions estimation in operation and maintenance stage is yet to do, because data collection is so hard and carbon emissions estimation methodology is very complicated. In this study, a basic unit of carbon emission in the operation and maintenance stage of the road infrastructure was developed in order to get the quantitative determination of carbon that occurring. Carbon emissions of the Expressway and Common state road was calculated by using the basic unit of carbon emission and application plan of basic unit of carbon emission are presented.

The Road Subsidence Status and Safety Improvement Plans (도로함몰 실태와 안전관리 개선 방안)

  • Ground subsidence can result in the formation of sinkholes, potholes, settlement of structures, and road subsidence. Road subsidence is described as the sudden collapse of the road surface into subsurface cavities caused by the loss of bearing capacity in the ground, such as the dissolution of limestone by fluid flow in the surface causing the formation of voids leading to subsidence at the surface. Road subsidence occurs about 665 times annually, and this incidence has been increasing until 2013. Damaged underground facilities, management negligence, and lowering of the ground water table have been the causes of road subsidence in Seoul. Seoul metropolitan government announced special management counter plans to relieve the anxieties and make the roads safe for passing. Construction sites, such as excavation works, need to be managed properly because they have strong potential to induce road subsidence. The aim of this study was to identify the main causes of road subsidence and suggest management plans. First, life cycle cost analysis revealed the daytime construction to be more appropriate than nighttime. In addition, by analyzing the limitations of using sand as a backfill material, it is proposed to use a flowable backfill material instead of sand. Finally, to reduce the blind spots, which is a problem in surveying the road pavement conditions of local governments, the road to be managed is divided into several zones, and a specialized agency is selected for each zone and a method of surveying the blind spots through collaboration is suggested.
