Numerical Investigation of Forward Flight Characteristics of Multi-Ducted Fan (다중 덕트 팬 전진 비행 특성에 대한 수치적 연구)

  • Increasing cruise speed is an important issue for the development of the next generation rotorcraft. Among several concepts proposed by previous research, the rotorcraft with ducted fan demonstrates its possibility of high-speed flight. In this study, numerical simulations are conducted to investigate the aerodynamic and flow characteristics of multi-ducted fan in forward flight. The aerodynamic efficiency around front ducted fan is determined by interaction between free-stream velocity and the induced velocity. While flow characteristics of rear ducted fan are dominantly influenced by the front ducted fan. Separation in the front ducted fan occurs faster than that of rear ducted fan, and the separation at duct inlet induces an increase of fan thrust. As a result of interaction effect between each ducted fan, relatively aligned inflow enters to the rear ducted fan. Therefore, thrust of the rear fan is decreased steadily before separation, and sudden changes of thrust in fans occur simultaneously. Due to the pressure decrease on lower surface, the normal force of rotorcraft is reduced with forward speed.

  • 초고층 공동주택에 설치되는 주방 및 욕실의 배기를 외부로 배출하는 방법은 공용유도관로인 수직덕트를 설치하고 그 상부말단에 하이브리드 루프팬의(hybrid roof fan)이 설치하는 것이다. 하이브리드 루프팬의 기능은 자연통풍력이 약한 하절기는 강제적으로 루프팬에 의해 구동하고 자연배기를 수행할 수 있을 정도로 자연통풍력이 큰 동절기는 루프팬을 운전하지 않는 기능을 보유하도록 유도하는 것이다. 본 고는 이러한 하이브리드 루프팬의 운전조건을 53층 높이의 임의 공동주택에 대해, 수직덕트의 선정한 후, 제시하고자 한다.

Dynamic Characteristics of Ducted Fan: A Study (덕트 팬의 동특성 연구)

  • The dynamic characteristics of a ducted fan in hovering condition were investigated. The section properties of the fan blade were calculated, and a simulation model was developed according to the rotor system components. Dynamic analyses were conducted relative to the rotational speed and the collective pitch. The proposed ducted fan system showed less aero-elastic instability within the designated operating ranges. To verify the analytical approach, a rotating test stand of the ducted fan was set up. A functional test of the assembly was carried out to determine the kinematics and interference between components. The non-rotating and rotating normal frequencies were measured by excitation of the collective pitch using hydraulic actuators. The results indicated a correlation between the test equipment and the simulation model.

  • In this study, a time marching free wake method was used for the aerodynamic analysis and the boundary element method was used for the aeroacoustic analysis of the Tail Fan, respectively. In addition, variations of blades position in duct were performed and the aeroacoustic analysis shows a marginal improvement in noise level.

Greenhouse Cooling Using Air Duct and Integrated Fan and Pad System (일체형 팬 앤 패드 시스템과 에어 덕트를 이용한 온실 냉방)

  • The fan and pad evaporative cooling system is one of the main cooling methods in greenhouses. Its efficiency is very high, but it has some disadvantages as temperature gradient in greenhouse is large. This study was conducted to reduce the internal temperature gradients in the fan and pad cooling greenhouses. Experiments on cooling performance were carried out in a greenhouse equipped with air duct and integrated fan and pad system as an idea of this study. It showed that the cooling efficiency of an integrated fan and pad system was 75.7% in the first stage and 88.6% in the second stage. When this cooling system was operated for an unshaded and a shaded greenhouse, there were cooling effects of $5.7\sim7.6^{\circ}C$ and $7.4\sim9.7^{\circ}C$ to the control greenhouse, respectively. Maximum temperature differences in a cooling greenhouse, with a length of 18m, were $1.6\sim1.7^{\circ}C$ for shaded conditions and $2.3\sim2.7^{\circ}C$ for unshaded conditions. This greenhouse cooling method, with air duct and integrated fan and pad system, can reduce about 40~50% of the internal temperature gradients in the usual fan and pad cooling greenhouses.

  • Numerical analyses on the aerodynamic characteristics of a counter rotating axial flow fan were conducted for the development of an axial type in-line duct fan. The counter rotating fan has a front rotor and a rear rotor which are counter rotating each other. Blade design of the counter rotating fan was done by extension of design method for axial flow fan which consists of rotor and stator blades. Through flow analysis was performed using matrix method which is applied for flow fields prediction of compressors or turbines. Aerodynamic characteristics and characteristic curves of the counter rotating fan were analyzed by expansion of the frequency domain panel method with duct modeling. Pressure losses were higher at leading edge and hub region of rotor blades. Characteristic curve of the counter rotating fan was overpredicted without consideration of viscous effect.

  • By using an actuator disk method based flow solver, aerodynamic analysis is carried out for a dual ducted fan aircraft, which is one of the VTOL compound aircrafts, and its associated ground effect is analyzed. The characteristics and accuracy of the solver for ground effect analysis is evaluated through a comparison with the results obtained from the sliding mesh technique. The aerodynamic performance and flow field characteristics with respect to the distance from the ground are analyzed. As the ground distance decreases, the fan thrust increases, but the deterioration of total normal force and hovering flight efficiency is identified owing to the decrease in the vertical force of the duct, fuselage, and wing. By examining the flow field in the bottom of the fuselage, the ground vortices and fountain flow generated by the interaction of the fan wake and ground are identified, and their influence on the aerodynamic performance is analyzed. The strength and characteristics of outwash with respect to the ground distance and azimuth direction are analyzed through comparison/examination of velocity profile. Influence of the ground effect with respect to collective pitch angle is also identified.

  • In the present study, numerical simulation was performed to investigate aerodynamic characteristics of a ducted fan-upper/lower vanes system in hover. Sensitivity analysis of aerodynamic forces for a system component was conducted with the deflection angle of upper vanes varying but at the constant rotational speed and the collective pitch angle of fan blades. Then, vane control performance and duct airload distributions were analyzed in detail to physically understand operating mechanisms of individual vane and interference effect between duct and vanes. Finally, new control concept of operating upper vanes has been proposed to improve the control performance of the full configuration. It is found that the side force and rolling moment of upper vanes increase linearly with the variation of those deflection angle; however, the total side force is significantly small due to the reaction force acted on the duct. It is also found that upper vanes close to the duct contraction side have a key role in changing vane control forces. It is revealed that the duct suction pressure is induced by the interaction with the suction side of upper vanes, while duct pressure recovery by the interaction with the pressure side, leading to increase in duct asymmetric force. When four upper vanes are kept in situ at 0° deflection angle or removed, the total control performance was improved with duct asymmetric force reduced and the total magnitude of roll remarkably increasing up to 80%.

Structural Design and Analysis for Duct Stand of Blowers (송풍기 덕트 스탠드의 구조 설계 및 해석)

  • In this study, structural design and analysis of a duct stand for blowers were performed. This structure was an axial fan and blower for wind tunnel of the vehicle environmental test chamber. The design of the blower duct stand support structure was performed by investigation on various loads. Additionally, self-weight of the motor and weight of the duct were investigated and applied. The duct stand structure was designed by analyzing the load. The safety of the structural design results was evaluated through finite element analysis. Finally, the safety of the design result was verified.

  • For prediction of the windmilling performance with consideration of bypass-duct loss of the twin-spool axi-centrifugal turbo-fan engine in flight condition, this study has examined the windmilling process and the physical phenomenon of the engine parts. Also, a mixing phenomenon with air passed through the bypass-duct has been analyzed. The results of the predicted windmilling performance has been compared and analyzed using the dimensional parameters.
