The Importance of Moral Education from Sincerity in Doctrine of the Mean (『中庸』 「誠論」 對品德敎育之重要性)

  • In the beginning of the 21st century, UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) thinks the key to the battle is "morality," and thus proposes the norm of ethic, morals and values. Not only have countries all over the world responded to the proposal, but we in Taiwan are also involved in the campaign, hoping through the new movement, the deviant values are to be modified. "Doctrine of the mean" is the best essence in Confucianism when it comes to the idea of government ruling by a virtuous king, who possesses sincerity, a crucial element to inspire better character. Moral teachings nowadays emphasize the fact that a person should own ethic virtue and behave accordingly. Only via constant practice and training can people obtain sincerity and virtues in the learning process, in which Confucianists rely mostly on self-discipline while more tactics are applied to modern education.

A study on the meaning of 'de'德 in The Book of Document(書經) (『서경』의 덕(德) 개념에 대한 고찰)

  • This paper is aimed at defining the meaning of 'de' in The Book of Document on the basis of it's various example of use and the relation between it and tian(天) ming(命). The conclusion is that 'de' in this book means a special quality of fulfill a ideal role required to a specific being. By the way the role in the case of man is determined by his position. Therefore 'de' is redefined as a special quality of fulfill a ideal role required to a specific position. In short, de can be defined as 'appropriation to a specific being'. The ideal role which is the basis of de is determined first-hand by tianming (天命) and a king's order according to it, and is determined basically by mores. The meaning of 'de' in this book as 'appropriation' defines 'de' monistically and also connotes easily it's various example of use. De in the case of things is interpreted as appropriation to it's nature and in the case of man to his position. And the meaning of 'de' like this gives the basis to interpret 'governing with de'(德治) in the Analects of Confucius as zhenming(正名).

  • The word, 'Naturalization(向化)' is an unfamiliar term for us; however, to us as citizens who live in a multicultural society, it is a word worthy of hearty appreciation even once. At the present Korean dictionary, it has been defined as the word related to those terms such as Enlightenment(敎化) which are used to explicate the governance through a virtue of moral excellence(德治主義) of Confucianism, and the word, 'Hyanghwa(向化)' itself has already included the meaning of Enlightenment(敎化). On many occasions, people who were dubbed the converts or the naturalized citizens(向化人) emigrated to Chosun because there were such substantial reasons as economic and political advantages, rather than living in a society for reasons to the governance through a virtue of moral excellence(德治主義). Therefore, to understand the converts or the Naturalized citizens(向化人) correctly, it shall be required to examine the cause which is the governance through a virtue of moral excellence together with the true realities which are economic and political advantages. The word, such as Hwangjoin(皇朝人) should be considered in order to understand the meaning of 'Naturalization(向化)'. Hwangjoin(皇朝人) were those displaced people who had been forced to leave the fallen Ming Dynasty, and they will be contrasted with the converts or Naturalized citizens(向化人) that were mainly composed of the Northern tribes or Japanese. Actually, Naturalized citizens(向化人) and Hwangjoin(皇朝人) had all emigrated to Chosun because of changes in international affairs, meanwhile, however, they were treated differently for the reason that they were 'Hwai'(華夷). If we dub Chosun 'Self'(我), Naturalized citizens(向化人) and Hwangjoin(皇朝人) are equally called as 'The Other persons'(他者). Can we say that Chosun had established the right relationship with Other persons(他者)? Judging from the facts that there was occurrence of convert or naturalization for the other persons, dubbed Naturalized citizens(向化人) and that there was another occurrence of emigrants, called Hwangjoin(皇朝人), it is evident that the Relationships between the two had not rightly established. Also, the names so called Naturalized citizens(向化人) and Hwangjoin(皇朝人) were not given according to the preference of the other person, but provided by Chosun one-sidedly. The reasons for occurrence of convert or naturalization for the other persons, dubbed Naturalized citizens(向化人) and for occurrence of other emigrants, called Hwangjoin(皇朝人) were ideology such as 'Hwai'(華夷). It is thought that the Relationships between 'Self'(我) and 'The Other Person'(他者) can be established only after excluding ideology.

Flora of the vascular plants of the Baekdudaegan conservation area: Deok-chi to Yuk-sim-nyeong (백두대간보호지역의 식물상: 덕치-육십령 구간)

  • Baekdudaegan, the largest mountain range in eastern Asia, is a biodiversity hotspot in Korea that may have served as a glacial refugium. This study presents the flora of vascular plants on Deok-chi upto the Yuk-sim-nyeong area of the Baekdudaegan conservation area. The survey area was divided into four subareas and fieldwork was conducted for a total of twelve days in 2015. Voucher specimens were collected during the survey and were deposited at Daejeon University. A list of vascular plants was prepared based on the voucher specimens. The results of the survey showed that a total of 441 taxa, consisting of 100 families, 265 genera, 398 species, 9 subspecies, 32 varieties, and 2 forms, were found in the survey area. There was one endangered species, Aconitum coreanum, in the Bonghwasan Mt. area. Sixteen endemic taxa, 74 floristic regional indicator plants, as designated by the Ministry of the Environment, and eleven naturalized plants were distributed. The results of this study can serve as basic information to establish conservation and management plans for the Baekdudaegan conservation area.

2차원 수치모형을 이용한 만곡부 흐름특성 분석 (섬진강을 중심으로)

  • 자연하천에서의 형상은 직류하천보다는 어느 정도 만곡이 있는 사행하천이다. 이러한 만곡부가 교호적으로 나타나는 사행하천의 흐름구조는 매우 복잡하며, 이차류가 발생하는 만곡부에서 직류하천에서 예상되는 흐름분포를 왜곡시킴으로써, 유사의 이동, 횡방향의 유속분포가 다르게 나타난다. 이러한 만곡부의 흐름 특성은 만곡부 외측에 측방세굴과 수면교란, 그리고 수위를 상승시키며, 에너지 손실을 가져온다. 일반적으로 사행하천의 만곡부 외측에는 소(pool)가 발달되고, 내측에는 이차류에 의해 강턱 퇴적을 유발함으로써 점 사주(point bar)가 형성된다(우효섭, 2001). 본 연구에서는 사행하천이 비교적 발달한 섬진강 상류 덕치지구 구간에 대하여 2차원 수치모형인 RMA-2 모형을 이용하여 만곡부의 흐름특성을 분석하였다. 분석한 결과 유속의 분포는 만곡부 상류부에서 최대 흐름의 구역이 나타났으며, 만곡부에서는 흐름의 편향구역과 정체구역, 그리고 만곡부 하류부에서 에너지 손실이 일어난 후 흐름의 회복구역으로 흐름의 특성을 나타났다. 또한 수위의 분포는 상류부에서 점차적으로 수위가 감소하다가 만곡부에서 수위가 상승하였고 만곡부가 끝나는 하류부에서의 수위는 감소하였다. 만곡부에서의 횡적인 수위 분포는 만곡부의 외측이 내측보다 수위가 상승되는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 2차원 수치모형인 RMA-2 모형을 이용한 만곡부의 흐름 특성은 만곡부에서의 홍수위 상승에 대한 검토로서 하천의 바람직한 치수관리 방안에 효과적으로 이용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

  • 지구 온난화에 따른 기후변화는 예측하기 힘든 패턴으로 특정지역의 강우빈도와 강수량을 증가시키고, 과거 관측되지 않았던 홍수 수위를 기록하는 등의 이상기후 현상으로 나타나고 있다. 기후변화의 눈으로 봤을 때 2010년은 전 세계적으로 많은 홍수, 지진, 산사태 등의 자연재해를 야기 시켰고, 이는 수자원의 활용과 관리 측면 뿐만 아니라 사회, 경제적 영향 및 자연재해로 확장되어 인류의 생활에 큰 영향으로 다가왔다. 이처럼 예기치 못한 기후변화에 대응하기 위해서는 수자원 정책이나, 장기발전계획 뿐만 아니라 발생된 기후 상황을 검토하고, 그 지역에서 발생된 강수량, 수위, 유량 등에 대한 기초 자료에 대한 분석이 선행되어야 할 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구에서는 2010년에 섬진강 유역의 최상류에서 하류에 이르는 덕치 외 12개 수위관측소를 대상 지점으로 선정하여 각 지점에 대한 현장조사를 실시하고, 수위모니터링을 비롯한 강수량, 방류량 등의 기본 자료를 수집하여 과거 자료와 비교검토 하였다. 그리고 저 평수기와 홍수기에 하천의 수위 및 유량을 현장에서 직접 실측하여 섬진강 상류에서 하류에 이르는 유출특성을 분석하였다. 그 결과 2010년 섬진강 유역에서는 지점에 따라 관측 개시일이 다르지만 1990년부터 관측이 개시된 구례와 송정 지점을 비롯하여 관측 이래 최고수위에 해당하는 호우가 발생되었음을 확인 할 수 있었다. 또한 2010년에 발생한 섬진강 유역의 지점별 상류에서 하류까지의 첨두유량을 분석 및 제시하였다. 이는 기존에 추정에 의해서 제시되었던 고수위 부분의 유량을 실측함으로써 고수위에 대한 수위-유량관계곡선식을 새롭게 제시하고, 홍수 주의보와 경보수위를 검토할 수 있는 기회가 되었다. 아울러 본 자료는 추후 발생 가능한 홍수에 좀 더 신속하게 대응할 수 있는 기초가 될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

Spawning Patterns of Three Bitterling Fishes (Pisces: Acheilognathinae) in Relation to the Shell Size of Host Mussels (Unio douglasiae sinuolatus) (납자루아과(Pisces: Acheilognathinae) 담수어류 3종의 숙주조개(작은말조개; Unio douglasiae sinuolatus) 크기에 대한 산란양상)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the spawning preference of the Acheilognathinae fishes in relation to the shell size of host mussels after identifying the species of eggs and fries in the host mussel using our recently developed RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) molecular marker at four sites [Hongcheon Naechoncheon (HN) and Deokchicheon (HD) from the North Han River basin and Jeongseon Goljicheon (JG) and Joyanggang (JJ) from the South Han River] in South Korea during May in each year between 2015 and 2018. The Acheilognathinae fish observed in the studied sites included one species (Acheilognathus signifer) in HN and JG, three species (Rhodeus uyekii, A. signifer, and Acheilognathus yamatsutae) in HD, and two species (A. signifer and Acheilognathus yamatsutae) in JJ, and we collected 982 host mussels (Unio douglasiae sinuolatus) that inhabited in all four sites. Using the RFLP molecular marker, we confirmed 46 eggs and fry of the Acheilognathinae fish (454 A. signifer, 43 Acheilognathus yamatsutae, and 149 Acheilognathus yamatsutae) in Unio douglasiae sinuolatus (N=163; 16.6%). We compare the average shell length, shell height, and shell width of mussels with [presence] eggs/fry and mussels without [absence] eggs/fry to examine the spawning preference according to the size of host mussels in each site. The results show that the shell length (1.98 mm), shell height (0.85 mm), and shell width (0.73 mm) of mussels with the eggs/fry were significantly larger (Mann-Whitney U test, P=0.002; difference=1.98 mm) than those of mussel without eggs/fry in HD where three species cohabitated. Although the shell length, shell height, and shell width of mussels with the eggs/fry were larger also in the other three sites, the difference was not statistically significant. In addition, we analyzed the mean number of spawned eggs and fry of each species and found $9.31{\pm}5.94$ R. uyekii, $2.86{\pm}2.45$ A.signifer, and $2.50{\pm}1.32$ A. yamatsutae. R. uyekii spawned 6.45-6.81 more eggs than A.signifer and A. yamatsutae on average per mussel, and it was statistically significant (Kruskal-Wallis test, P < 0.001). These findings indicate that the three species of Acheilognathinae fish tend to prefer larger mussels as their spawning hosts, and this tendency increases when the number of cohabitating bitterling fish species increases. Moreover, A.signifer and A. yamatsutae spawned a smaller number of eggs evenly in more host mussels while R. uyekii spawned many eggs on relatively fewer mussels. We found mussels (N=4) having the eggs/fry of two coexisting species, A. signifier and A. yamatsutae in HD and JJ where more than two bitterling fish species occurred. It suggests the interspecific competition taking place between the Acheilognathinae fishes for utilizing the same resource of mussels for spawning when two or more species cohabitate. This study is expected help to understand better the spawning patterns and reproductive ecology of the Acheilognathinae fishes, which will provide insightful information for advancing our understanding of their ecological relationships - mutualism or host-parasitism - with host mussels.

Gubong Song IK- Pil's Thought of Statecraft(經世思想) (구봉 송익필의 경세사상)

  • Gubong Song Ik-pil could not behave according to his aspiration directly due to restrictions in his social standing. Despite that, he actually did so indirectly through either close friends or younger students by exhibiting 'cheobyeonwigwon (處變爲權) with the goal of jichijuui (至治主義). He insisted on people-oriented politics grounded on cheonmyeongsasang (天命思想) and also suggested the humbleness of the royal family and jinhyulchaek (賑恤策) based on love of the people. In addition, he promoted public welfare and stability to enhance patriotism and also insisted on the policy of strengthening national defense with seoeolgongsacheon (庶?公私賤)'s provision of military service through the enforcement of yangcheonjongbujongmobeop (良賤從父從母法). Also, according to the letter sent to Lee San-bo, he suggested public service ethics, for instance, personally, getting rid of ulterior motives, exhibiting diligence, integrity, and wisdom, and doing one's utmost to handle tasks fairly without causing any problems and externally, being actively involved in managing and utilizing persons of ability and also relieving the poor and managing masters as well. In brief, we can assume that Song Ik-pil's thought of statecraft (經世思想) is the concrete methodology to reach the politics of kingcraft called 'jichi (至治)' by stabilizing public welfare grounded on benevolent and benign administration. He is often compared to Jegalryang on account of his innate qualities and cleverness. He was equipped with the excellent capacity of gyeongse even referred to as the moju (謀主) of four persons, Yi Yi, Seong Hon, Jeong Cheol, and Lee Gwi, and harshly criticized as a slick evil (奸鬼), too. His gyeongsesasang, however, ended up being incomplete due to restrictions in his social status. He was a person who loved the people more than anyone else, kept suggesting innovative reform plans to stabilize the people's lives, and was capable of practicing them all. His ideal of jichi was left unfulfilled, however.

The King-Vassal-Subject Relation in Neo-Confucianism (주자학(朱子學)에 있어서 군(君)·신(臣)·민(民) 관계)

  • The king-vassal-subject relation in neo-confucianism can be elucidated in their status context as well as in their communicative context. In their status context, there are two aspects of power such as sovereignty and rule. Chu-zhi thinks that subjects are nobler than king in the aspect of sovereignty, but the relation is reversed in the aspect of ruling power. These two relaitions are not contradictory, but compatible. When ruling power operates, he thinks, king, vassals and word-watching officials(諫官) must check each other. In their communicative context, there are theories of sympathy and public discourse. Sympathy consists of moral sympathy through virtue politics and emotional sympathy through enjoying together. Chu-zhi finds a theoretical basis of public discourse in the place where heavenly principle meets with human mind. Public discourse is to search for common good. Institutional arrangements for public discourse are the official's rights to open and free speech. He thinks that word-watching officials must be speech leaders.

A Study on Chinese Utopia Literature - TaohuaYuanji & Renmiantaohua ('대동(大同)'과 '도화원(桃花源)'이후 유토피아는 어떻게 재현되는가 - 격비(格非)의 「인면도화(人面桃花)」에 대한 일고(一考))

  • Since the Taoyuanming of Confucius an Arcadia (Taohuayuan), utopia imagined in China has continued to this day. Such utopian imagination has been shaped by a variety of literary texts. These works depict the human desires and frustrations that form the utopian imagination. Typically, an Arcadia (Taohuayuan) has been recognized as a symbol of East Asian utopia. An Arcadia (Taohuayuan) anarchism is the utopian character of this small country, based on sensitization of the Lao strong. An Arcadia (Taohuayuan) world ruling class does not exist. But Confucius thought a utopian world is possible to imagine on the premise of 'Virtuous Policy' (德治). By the late Qing Dynasty (淸末), Kangyouwei (康有爲) had written and presented a utopia realized through the system of the "East-West stand." The literary text on utopia information in continued to experiment with implementation of the 'imagined' in the literature as "reality" of everyday life, immediately following the 1911 revolution in the People's Republic of China. As an Avant garde writer, Gefei's "Renmiantaohua" was influenced by the reflexive nature of the report on the point of the experiment. Gefei's "Renmiantaohua" has been rated as an outstanding work depicting the implementation process and the frustration of the utopian imagination. He is an inspiration to vanguard artists who focus on the desire and the frustration of the utopian imagination through the "Renmiantaohua" myths and stories that are comparable to the Sijipuseu story, which in itself perpetuates utopia in literature. In this paper, we explored the trails to implementation of a utopian imagination that has persisted since the ancient Chinese in current literary text. An Arcadia (Taohuayuan) of Confucius and Taoyuanming accompanied Gefei in the 21st century in describing the process of desire and frustration to realize utopia through a variety of traditional shape figures among other favorites. The author interprets those frustrations and desires of the human life course as just utopian imagination.
