A Study on the Mathematics Education of Magnet High Schools in Korea (특성화고등학교 수학교육에 관한 현황 및 개선 방안에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of the study was to reveal the current situations and suggest some ideas to improve the mathematics education of magnet high schools in Korea. Magnet high schools were founded to offer special professional education for students who are interested in a specialized area. Students were selected based on their abilities and potentials in those fields. In Magnet high schools, the curriculums were constructed based on these objectives. Also close connections were established with universities through professional education. However, many magnet high schools are facing difficulties to chase two rabbits at the same time. Those are university admissions and specialized education for near future employment. Furthermore, increasing number of students who want to study at the university level cause more difficulties. The results of the study indicated several suggestions to improve current situation of the magnet high schools.

The Contribution of the S&T-Centered Research Universities on the Regional Innovation: Based on Mode 1 and Mode 2 Knowledge Performances (과학기술특성화대학의 지역혁신 연계성 분석: 모드 1과 모드 2 지식성과를 중심으로)

  • The competition among nations has been extended to competition between localities, and the importance of knowledge activities in local areas is being emphasized. To contribute to the nurturing of highly qualified professionals and the development of local industry, the Korean government established the S&T-centric research universities including KAIST in 5 local areas. These S&T-centric research universities are top notch research centers and educational environments in Korea. However, it has been pointed out that their ability to act as local innovation hubs is limited. Accordingly, this study conducted an empirical analysis on the outcomes of the S&T-centric research universities by dividing them into two categories, Mode 1 and Mode 2, and comparing them with those of other general universities. It was found that the outcomes of the S&T-centric universities were higher in Mode 1, but lower in Mode 2, than those of the general universities. Furthermore, the S&T-centric universities are not connected very much to the region's specialized industries. It was difficult to find any evidence that the S&T-centric universities differ from the other universities in terms of their outcomes or activities as they were initially envisaged.

Future Scenarios of Asian Universities in a view Point of Equality (평등의 관점에서 본 아시아 대학의 미래 시나리오)

  • This study was performed in order to suggest the future model of Asian universities that could be used in the planning of the global competitive strategy. Futurologists forecasted the future of higher education using Harman Fan Scenario as like this. First, most current universities will be 'the satellite university' until 2015. Second, they also will replace 'the bookless university' until 2020. Third, they will be 'no calendar university' until 2025. And then they may be 'all have access university' until 2030. After 2030, futurologists prospected that almost universities based on off-line campus will be disappeared into the history. The analysis method of Harman fan scenario and applied scenarios were also used to "A study on the future scenario of Korean university". The predictive model and the alternative models were explored in a view point of students, enterprise, and government. Individuality with educational excellence are standardized for learner, profit and effectiveness are applied for enterpriser, and equality with welfare are adapted for national leader. Asian universities need to focus on bringing up the practical ability based on conscious and emotional education instead of knowledge based on memory. Also they need to enforce the specialized education that can create new jobs through convergence of interdisciplinary. Especially, Asian nations need to explore, to find the strengthen area of their universities compared with USA. And these area should be specialized. The convergency strategy between oriental medicine and informatics is a meaningful sample. Based on this point, a predicted with 3 alternative scenarios in a view point of equality were suggested for the future of Asian universities.

  • 학문의 기초와 문화발전의 초석을 다지는 대학출판부가 어려운 여건 속에서도 지적 지평을 넓히기 위해 활발히 움직이고 있다. 학교 고유의 특성을 기반으로 한 기획력을 발휘하여 많은 양서를 출간하고 그를 바탕으로 특성화된 전문출판사로 성장하고 있다. 주어진 역할을 완수하기 위해 나름대로 노력하고 있는 국내 몇몇 대학출판부의 활동 내용을 소개한다.
