In this paper, we made an investigation into the awareness of mathematics by college students, they took a course in mathematics as the liberal arts. Mathematics as the liberal arts is divided into 2 types: mathematics focused on calculus or statistics, and living mathematics except them. We researched mathematics as the liberal arts on a curriculum in several universities and analyzed them. From these results, we suggest the improvement of mathematics as the liberal arts in university.

대학 교양수학 과정에서 수학적 명제를 증명하는 과정은 중요하다. 선행 연구들은 주관식 증명문제의 시험이 어려워 증명문제를 피하고 더 나아가 포기하게 만든다고 한다. 여기서는 대학 교양수학 과정에서 필요하고 중요한 기본 개념이나 정리를 선정하여 선택형 또는 참, 거짓 평가문항으로 개발하고 학생들에게 시험을 보게 하여 결과를 분석하고 이를 통해 증명문제의 두려움을 조금이라도 줄여주고 기본개념의 확실한 이해를 위해 도움을 제공하려고 한다.

Traditionally, the university mathematics has consisted of contents without consideration of the students' major and state of students' academic achievement. Even though this kind of policy seems to be good overall, there are some drawbacks because it does not give much consideration to the current system of entrance examinations and change of society. Hence we are required to classify contents of general university mathematics according to particular majors and colleges. Furthermore, we need to adjust the difficulty level of contents according to the appropriate level of academic need and standard.

This paper deals with disparities in course evaluation between general and major courses of mathematics education. We provide concrete evidences which verify the mismanagement of the evaluation system and can be an impetus to a more rational one. We indicate the direction to which professors of mathematics education should head. Also those statistics obtained from the author's teaching of mathematics education and related subjects for twelve years are provided for the fact-finding of and improving the erroneous evaluation system.

In this paper, we selected 145 students from engineering college students who took P University's the Scholastic Level Assessment and registered the Basic Mathematics Class among the students who achieved 4th~7th grade in the mathematics B-type of the College Scholastic Ability Test. We compared and analyzed the correlation among the chosen students' grade for the College Scholastic Ability Test, test results of the Scholastic Level Assessment and mid-term test of the Basic Mathematics Subject, type of college entrance and actual condition survey of students in order to derive optimized teaching method for general mathematics subjects which can possibly increase the students' academic ability.

대학수학에서 수학적귀납법의 원리를 소개하고 풍부한 예를 통해 이해를 돕는다. 특별히 교양수학을 수강하는 1학년 학생 수준에 맞게 매스매티카 프로그램을 이용하여 구체적인 예를 갖고 한단계 한단계 접근하여 수학적귀납법의 증명을 연습할 기회를 준다. 증명을 단계적으로 하는 것을 연습하여 학생들은 논리적인 사고능력을 개발하고 새로운 명제를 발견할 수 있는 기회를 맞보게 한다. 물론, 증명 연습은 1학년 신입생에게는 쉽지 않으나 여러 명제에 대해 연습을 하는 것은 수학적, 논리적 사고 능력을 개발하고 증명문제에 대한 인식을 바꾸는데 매우 중요한 역할을 할 것이다.

무한, 극한, 연속, 미분가능과 같은 중요한 수학적 개념을 이해하는 것은 대학수학 교양과정의 미분적분학 수강생들에게 필수적이다. 이들 개념의 이해 수준을 부록1, 2, 3을 통해 알아보고 평가를 분석한다. 평가결과는 이해도가 낮은 학생들을 위한 새로운 교수법이 필요성을 알게 하고 수학적 기본개념의 이해를 증진시키는데 정의의 정확한 이해를 돕고 구체적인 예제를 제시하는 교수법 개발에 수학교수의 노력을 필요로 한다.

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effects of the topics in basic mathematics on academic achievement in order to improve the problem-solving abilities of low achievement students in university general mathematics. This program has been conducted from P University as a part of Education Capacity Enhancing Project. The goals of this program are to make students who have fear to mathematics feel confident for mathematics, and make easier to study general mathematics and major field without any difficulties for the students. The topics in basic mathematics was enforced with solving problem based on comprehension of the basic concept and computer-based learning. The classes were organized as Algebra-Geometry, Calculus, and General mathematics class by students' applications for classes and basic academic ability. As a result, the topics in basic mathematics has been evaluated as positive way to effect satisfaction and learning effect for the students who have low-level in basic academic ability. And also, according to the survey, the result shows that assignment through Webwork system and Mathematica program practice are helpful for learning basic mathematics. But several measures are asked for participation in the class and prevention for quitter of participants.
