  • Pin-on-disk test is a suggested abrasion testing method by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials). This briefly illustrated the Archimedean spiral motion of a pin type specimen on a disk. To apply this method to rock cutting tools, a constant linear velocity (CLV) is precisely maintained during the test. We defined the two velocity vectors (RPM and horizontal speed) which connected to the resultatnt velocity. We derived a differential equations for the two parameters under CLV condition. It was difficult to find a exact solution. Previous literatures had been reviewed, and an approximate solution was investigated. We mathematically simulated the result for a certain parameter, and examine the accuracy of the solution.

  • This technical note describes the calculation method of continuous constant linear velocity Archimedean spiral paths which are applied to the pin-on-disk abrasion test. Approximate constant linear velocity Archimedean spirals have unstable velocities in the very near region of the rotational origin. Thus, in this technical note, the offset distance from the rotational origin was given by using a hollow type rock sample to maintain the constant velocity during the test. Also, to connect the inward and outward spirals continuously, the information of start and end points were input on the next spiral path consecutively. Furthermore, the calculation program was developed to provide convenience for calculating constant linear velocity spirals according to the specimen dimension and abrasion test conditions.

  • This study proposes a statistical procedure for analyzing container ship operation data that can help determine fuel consumption patterns. We first investigate the features that affect fuel consumption and develop the prediction model to find current fuel consumption. The ship data can be divided into two-type data. One set of operation data includes sea route, voyage information, longitudinal water speed, longitudinal ground speed, and wind, the other includes machinery data such as engine power, rpm, fuel consumption, temperature, and pressure. In this study, we separate the effects of external force on ships according to Beaufort Scale and apply a partial least squares regression to develop a prediction model.

  • As a great earthquake hit east Japan recently, the interests for the necessity of earthquake resistant design and earthquake resistance ability of existent structures are much increased. The damage or collapse of a bridge, as a social overhead capital structure affects socially and economically. Thus the evaluation of earthquake resistance ability of these structures is very important. The reviewing methods for earthquake resistance ability are mostly deterministic. Although the deterministic methods are fit for the evaluation of safety of each member, they are not practical for the whole structure. For the evaluation of structural safety for earthquake, the method for the evaluation of fragility or damage is needed for some stages of damage. In this paper, fragility curves of steel box bridge using RFPB bearing for PGA, PGV, SA, SV, SI are constructed, and these are compared with the cases of FPB.

  • Starches obtained from Seipoong and Daeji potato were classified into go starch granules $(>41{\mu}m)$ and small starch granules $(<3{\mu}m)$. Rheological properties of heat-gelatinized starch paste were studied to elucidate difference of the fractionated starches. Heat-gelatinized starch paste of potato showed Bingham pseudo-plastic behavior. The consistency index and yield stress of small starch granule paste were greater than those of large starch granule paste. As starch paste concentration increased, consistency index and yield stress of heat-gelatinized small starch granule paste increased more than those of large one. As measuring temperature increased, consistency index of heat-gelatinized starch paste decreased and temperature depedence was greater in small starch granule paste than in large one.

  • This paper is designed to put forth a proposal for configuration of an optimized observation network based on GNSS CORS with a view to continued monitoring of crustal deformation in the East-Asian region. For this purpose, a comprehensive analysis of the results of the testing of various forms of GNSS CORS observation network tentatively constructed based on the Asia-Pacific IGS station has confirmed that geometrically arranged minimum five and ten or more reference points and an EAREF, constructed with a baseline length no longer than 2,500km, can produce an optimum outcome. And an EAREF-applied analysis on the effects of the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake of March 2011 shows that there were conspicuous positional movements in Japan and Korea while there was no significant movement in other regions.

  • In this study, we developed strategies for pre-processing GNSS data for the purpose of separating geodetic factors from crustal deformation due to the earthquakes. Before interpreting GNSS data analysis results, we removed false signals from GNSS coordinate time series. Because permanent GNSS stations are located on a large tectonic plate, GNSS position estimates should be affected by the tectonic velocity of the plate. Also, stations with surrounding trees have seasonal signals in their three-dimensional coordinate estimates. Thus, we have estimated the location of an Euler pole and angular velocities to deduce the plate tectonic velocity and verified with geological models. Also, annual amplitudes and initial phases were estimated to get rid of those false annual signals showing up in the time series. By considering the two effects, truly geodetic analysis was possible and the result was used as preliminary data for analyzing post-seismic deformation of the Korean peninsula due to the Tohoku-oki earthquake.

  • Distributional characteristics of vascular plants and plants selection for revegetation in bare ground of lakeside was investigated in nine artificial lakes. The vascular plants were composed of 64 families, 194 genera, 268 species, 3 subspecies, 30 varieties, 3 forma, totaling 304 taxa. Dominant species of nine investigated areas were represented as Ambrosia trifida, Calystegia hederacea, Matricaria matricariodes, Xanthium italicum. Dominant species of three parts based on the location of artificial lakes were as follows:Ambrosia trifida, Bidens tripartita, Calystegia hederacea, Equisetum arvense, Setaria viridis, Spergula arvensis, Torilis japonica in northern part (Lake Paro and Soyang); Calystegia hederacea, Matricaria matricariodes, Rumex crispus, Xanthium italicum in middle part (Lake Chungju, Daecheong, Andong and Imha); and Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Bidens frondosa, Chenopodium glaucum, Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, Persicaria pubescens, Setaria viridis in southern part(Lake Juam, Hapcheon and Jinyang). Among the 304 taxa, Korean endemic, endangered and rare plants were not investigated. The naturalized plants were 46 taxa, and life form was Th-$R_5-D_4$-e type. Above the results, Calystegia hederacea, Equisetum arvense, Xanthium italicum, Matricaria matricariodes, and Spergula arvensis were considered with proper species for revegetation in bare ground of lakeside in artificial lakes.

  • This study examined the role of volunteer fire fighters in coping with great disasters in terms of community-based disaster management to provide some implications from a qualitative comparative case study between Korea and Japan. Kobe, which suffered from the Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake in 1995, was the study area. The city experienced an inadequate institutional system and lack of disaster management infrastructure at the time before the disaster. The study indicates that Korea volunteer fire fighters are not prepared sufficiently to tackle great disasters in terms of the supporting system, capacity and role by analyzing improvement plans of Japanese Volunteer Fire Fighters after Great East Japan earthquake in 2011. The results of the case study suggests improvements in the disaster management system to provide cooperation between the central government and local government, core task distribution, and community-based disaster management.

  • An algorithm and a computer software are developed for the analysis of rail potential rise. The algorithm is intended to be integrated with the traction power system simulation program. In the algorithm, rail potentials are obtained by two step process. First the injection currents to the negative rail are obtained from load-flow study. In the next step, a network consisting of negative rail and the injection currents are constructed. Leakage resistance to ground are added to the network. And the network is analyzed for rail potentials. A software is developed to verify the validity of the algorithm. The result of the software is compared with the Simulink/SymPower circuit analysis result. The differences between the two results are with the acceptable range. The advantage of this algorithm is that it can be integrated with the existing traction power supply simulation program easily, which usually ignores negative rail's leakage resistance.
