  • The Korean historical 1iteratures describe that great eaathquakes with destructive damages occurred mainly in Kyongju-Ulsan areas during the period of 1 to 8 century and 16 to 17 century. It seems that the Ulsan fault system shows a little curved ttend with N-S strike in the southern part and diverges into three directions from the mid-northern lart of the fault. The dominant trends of the lineaments are NNE-SSW, NE-SW and NS directions. Trench excavation in the mid-northern part of the Ulsan fault shows thrust facies cutting slope deposit containing a compacted laminar structure whose origin may due to severe cryogenic activities of the last cold period(ahout 25OOO B.P.). Detailed observation of the facies gives some evidences related to two earthquake episodes of thrust components along the Ulsan fault system. Fault outcrop and trench study suggest that Ulsan fault seems to he one of the active fault which has reworked several times even in the late Quaternary.

  • With respect to a given structure, a stray current is to be defined as a current flowing on a structure that is not part of the intended electrical circuit. Most often DC-powered traction systems like railroads and tramlines are responsible for large dynamic stray currents. This type of stray current is generally results from the leakage of return currents from large DC traction systems that are grounded or have a bad earth-insulated return path. At the place where the current leaves the rail and metallic structures, electrolytic corrosion may take place. This paper investigates the domestic conditions on the electrolytic corrosion protection of buried metallic structures adjacent to DC traction systems by survey.

  • AT feeding system of the electric railway system is installed every about 10km at between the feeder and catenary in parallel and the mid-point of the transformer is connected to the rail The supply voltage of this system is doubled than rolling stock voltage. So the voltage drop is smaller than usual. And the other merit of this system is the decreasing inductive disturbance to the communication line because of the reduced current in rail which runs reversed in a point of view of rolling stock. Also, ATP(Auto Transformer Post) is installed to reduce the voltage drop and to mitigate the inductive disturbance, but still now the proper distance between the ATP and AT feeding system is not established which ranges from 2 to 10[km]. The stable result of simulation(which is set that the end of the line AT is installed) to the voltage drop and inductive disturbance can not analyzes the effect to the supply system due to the ATP. This paper analyzes the effect to the system depending on the location of ATP by forecasting the voltage drop and inductive disturbance.

  • The electrical characteristics of concrete block including a reinforcing rod in the foundation of the housing was fundamentally reviewed. It was tried to apply the substitutional earthing electrode in the foundation of the building. In order to identify the difference in the earthing resistance between mortar block and concrete block model, those models including a reinforcing rod in their inside were prepared and investigated for the earthing resistance. In results, the earthing resistance was largely affected by the block's resistivity compared to the change of resistance in reinforcing rods and the ground resistivity.

  • Digital Elevation Model, Ortho-image, and 3-D positional data of terrain features are indispensable elements for producing 3-D image information. In this research, digital pbotogrammetric studies were conducted to measure the 3-D positional data on high performance computer systems in order to replace analytical stereo-plotter-oriented tasks with those of digital workstations. Especially, technical approaches to measure these data on stereo workstation were developed and then the results were applied on SPOT satellite images. As the result of this study, the possibilities of the proposed technologies were tested and proved based on the ap-plication of the digital photogrammetric processes to extract 3-D ground coordinates of terrain features from digital satellite imagery.

  • The basic purpose of grounding is for human safety and normal operation of system related to electrical shock hazard by faults of electrical equipments. A grounding electrode is defined as a conducting element that connects electrical systems and/or equipment to the earth. The lowest possible resistance connection to the earth is sought from the grounding electrode. The grounding electrode is the foundation of the electrical safety system. The resistance to ground of vertical electrodes buried in the two deference soil structures has been analyzed for a length of electrodes and soil parameters. The equation of ground resistance of vertical electrodes are Tagg's equation for uniform soil models, and modified equation of Dwight equation for two-layer soil model. In this paper, compared with results of two equations are calculated values of vertical electrode in uniform and two-layer soil models.

  • Lightning is the discharging of high-voltage charged cells within clouds to earth other or to the earth. Lightning protection grounding is essential for the protection of buildings, distribution lines, and electrical equipment from lightning surges. Equipment grounding is for the purpose of controlling the voltage to earth within predictable limits. This paper investigates the effects of lightning arrester grounding resistance by analysing the neutral to earth voltages and arrester break down voltages when the lightning strike hits the distribution line. The case study was simulated numerically and graphically through the use of the EDSA software program.

  • The grounding systems provide a low resistance path for fault or normal currents into the earth. The material for reducing ground resistance is buried around the grounding electrode to increase its effective size of the electrode and thus to obtain low ground resistance. Increasing the contacting area with the grounding electrode is effective for lowering the ground resistance in soils. Using this idea the conductive expansion ground resistance reducing material was developed. In this paper experimental data has shown that the ground resistance reduction method using proposed material is superior to using a typically available commercial ground resistance reducing material.

  • This paper presents the comparison of the earth resistivity obtained from the measurements made with the three-electrode and four-electrode fall-of-potential techniques. The ${\rho}-a$ curve obtained from Wenner four-electrode method in undisturbed earth is in good agreement with the ${\rho}-l$ curve obtained from the three-electrode method based on the fall-of- potential method. However, The ${\rho}-a$ curve in disturbed earth with moisture and freezing is significantly different with the ${\rho}-l$ curve. The ${\rho}-a$ curve is considerably sensitive to the freezing and the moisture present in the earth surface compared to the ${\rho}-l$ curve. Thus to determine the actual earth resistivity, it is necessary to take into account the earth surface conditions when measuring the earth resistivity.
