  • An elasto-plastic constitutive model was proposed, in which the behavior at small-to-large strain level can be modeled. The proposed model is based on the anisotropic hardening description with the generalization of isotropic hardening rule and the total stress concept. From a mathematical approach it was proved that the model includes the previous successful models. The model was verified by a series of resonant column tests, torsional shear tests and triaxial tests, and the proposed model predicted small-to-large strain behavior more consistently and accurately than the hyperbolic model and the Ramberg-Osgood model for a weathered granitic soil. In addition, the nonlinearity under small strain condition was predicted appropriately for the torsional shear test results.

  • High velocity impacts are accompanied with large deformations, which generate a large amount of heat due to plastic works, resulting in a significant temperature rise of the material. Because the elevated temperature affects the dynamic properties of materials, it is important to predict the temperature rise during high-stram-rate deformations. Both existing vacancies and excess vacancies are credited to the stored energy, yet it is difficult to distinguish one from another in contribution to the stored energy using macroscopic level materials models. In this study, an atomistic material model for fee materials such as copper is set up to calculate the stored energy using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It is concluded that excess vacancies play an important role for the stored energy during a high-strain-rate deformation.

  • In order to evaluate the behavior of overall range from small strain to failure, the triaxial compression tests with LVDTs were performed for local displacement measurements. According to the result it was possible to evaluate the total range behavior from 0.001% to 10% and both secant moduli of undisturbed and disturbed weathered soils had a similar result in the small slain level. The normalized shear moduli$(G/G_{max})$ in the undrained triaxial compression tests were similar to those of resonant column tests but the maximum shear moduli$(G/G_{max})$ were strongly affected by the ratio of saturation. As a result of parametric study a constitutive model with anisotropic hardening could predict the behavior of total strain range.

  • An elastic polymer (e.g., PDMS) blended with EFG particles is a promising conductive composite for fabricating soft sensors that can detect an object's deformation up to or more than 50%. Here, we develop large-strain, sprayable soft sensors using a mixture of PDMS and EFG particles, which are used as a host elastomer and electrically conductive particles, respectively. A solution for a conductive composite mixture is prepared by the microwave-assisted graphite exfoliation, followed by ultrasonication-induced fragmentation of the exfoliated graphite and ultrasonic blending of PDMS and EFG. Using the prepared solutions for composite and pure PDMS, 1-, 2-, and 3-axis soft sensors are fabricated by airbrush stencil technique where composite mixture and pure PDMS are materials for sensing and insulating layers, respectively. We characterize the soft strain sensors after investigating the effect of PDMS/EFG wt% on mechanical compliance and electrical conductance of the conductive composite.

  • Undrained triaxial tests were peformed for a weathered soil, which includes local measurement using LVDT The behavior from small In large strain conditions could be evaluated consistently through a triaxial test, The stress-strain relationship of undisturbed samples were compared with the disturbed and the shear moduli in the small strain level had the almost same values. Especially the shear moduli were mostly affected by the initial condition of water contents. An anisotropic hardening model based on the total stress concept could predict the stress-strain relationship accurately, which makes it possible to analyze the geotechnical problem reasonably for the weathered soil.

  • Mixtures of sand and rubber particles ($D_{sand}/D_{rubber}=1$) are investigated to explore their characteristics under different stain level. Mixtures are prepared with different volumetric sand fractions ($sf=V_{sand}/V_{total}$). Experimental data are gathered from a resonant column, an instrumented oedometer, and a direct shear tests. Results show that sand and rubber differently control the behavior of the whole mixture with strain level. Non-linear degradation of small strain stiffness is observed for the mixtures with $sf{\geq}0.4$, while the mixtures with low sand fraction ($sf{\leq}0.2$) show significantly high elastic threshold strain. Vertical stress-deformation increases dramatically when the rubber particle works as a member of force chain. The strength of the mixtures increases as the content of rubber particle decreases, and contractive behavior is observed in the mixtures with $sf{\leq}0.8$. Rubber particle plays different roles with strain level in the mixture: it increases a coordination number and controls a plasticity of the mixture in small strain; it prevents a buckling of force chain in intermediate strain; it leads a contractive behavior in large strain.

  • In the present study, in order to apply a cyclic viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model to multi-layered ground conditions during large earthquake, the numerical simulations of the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake at Port Island, Kobe, Japan, were performed by the seismic response analysis. From the seismic response analysis, it was found that the acceleration calculated from the cyclic elasto-viscoplastic model and cyclic viscoelastic-viscoplastic models for clay was in close agreement with the recorded accelerations at the Port Island down-hole array, and the cyclic elastic-viscoplastic and viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive models showed little different behavior characteristics near clay layer. Thus, the propriety of viscoplastic model for clay was convinced. Therefore, it can be concluded that a cyclic viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model can give a good description of the amplification and also it showed accurate damping characteristics of clay during large event which induces plastic deformation in large strain range.

  • In this study, the importance of implied strength correction for shallow depths at a region of moderate to low seismicity with primary focus on its effect upon site natural period and mean period of the ground motion is investigated. In addition to the most commonly used Modified Kondner-Zelasko (MKZ) model, this paper uses a quadratic/hyperbolic (GQ/H) model that can capture the stress - strain response at large strains as well as small strain stiffness dependence. A total of six site profiles by downhole tests are used and 1D site response analyses are performed using three input motions with contrasting mean periods. The difference between non-corrected and corrected analyses is conditional on the site period as well as mean ground motion period. The effect of periods is analyzed by correlating them with the effective peak ground acceleration, maximum shear strains and amplification factors. The comparative study reveals that the difference is more prominent in soft sites with long site periods. Insignificant differences are observed when soil profiles are subjected to ground motion with very short mean period.

  • A p-version finite element model based on degenerate shell element is proposed tot the analysis of orthotropic laminated plates. In the nonlinear formulation of the model, the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted with large deflection and moderate rotation being accounted tot in the sense of yon Karman hypothesis. The material model is based on the Huber-Mises yield criterion and Prandtl-Reuss flow rule in accordance with the theory of strain hardening yield function, which is generalized lot anisotropic materials by introducing the parameters of anisotropy. The model is also based on extension of equivalent-single layer laminate theory(ESL theory) with shear deformation, leading to continuous shear strain at the interface of two layers. The integrals of Legendre polynomials are used for shape functions with p-level varying from 1 to 10. Gauss-Lobatto numerical quadrature is used to calculate the stresses at the nodal points instead of Gauss points. The validity of the proposed P-version finite element model is demonstrated through several comparative points of iew in terms of ultimate load, convergence characteristics, nonlinear effect, and shape of plastic tone.
