  • This study is to introduce the SDI(Selective Dissemination of Information) system, a typical aspect of information retrieval systems nowadays quite popular. The term "SDI" is most often used to describe systems of using electronic data processing equipment as a means of matching the terms of user-interest profile against document descriptors and selecting those documents with a specified degree of similarity to the terms of the user-interest profile. Various up-ta-date informations on SDI systems developed after the first introduction of the original idea by "Luhn" are reviewed and compared. The stage of development, structure, characteristics, and various other matters concerning the SDI systems are analyzed, and discussed.

  • This study attempted to organize the transition process of Royal Library (Gyujanggak) in chronological order, analyze the flow and find diachronic meaning during Gojong period, the most confused time at home and abroad prior to modernization. For this, first, the total status quo of King Gojong's library and book storage which played role of Royal Library and a personal library in Gojong period was investigated. Second, based on the current status of the investigation, the transition process from the Royal library in the early days of King Gojong to the Imperial library during the Korean Empire and its meaning were considered with the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, Seungjeongwon diary, various catalogs and historical records. Third, the changes of space-time and aspect of Royal library through the palace of Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, and Gyeongungung were examined to draw a sociopolitical meaning by schematizing each palace. As a result, first, King Gojong conjugated Kyujanggak as a device to strengthen the royal authority and accommodate Western culture in the process of modernization. Second, the crucial spaces containing the political orientation of King Gojong, such as the present king's portrait storage place, library(book storage), and office, formed a separate hall across Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Gyeongungung, and gradually changed into a Western architectural style.

  • In this study, the service image of the public library was investigated to the users of the public library, and basic data to improve the service image of the public library was also analyzed. In order to analyze public library service image, survey was conducted to 143 users of regional central library in Daejeon Metropolitan City. The results are as followed. First, reliability and publicity was the most highly rated and service satisfaction was the least highly rated. Second, when it was expressed with service quality image, there was no large difference. Third, reliability-providing useful information, publicity-fair treatment, and tangibles-convenient facility had positive images. On the other hand, access-good traffic condition, responsiveness-providing prompt new information, and tangibles-comfortable facility had negative images. Fourth, higher age group had lower mean value from teens to sixties.

  • The aims of this study were to provide a global overview of research trends in information science and to trace its changes in the main research topics over time using trends analysis. The study examined the topics of research articles published in Journal of Korean Society for Information Management between 1984 and 2009. Rather than taking a single snapshot of a given point in time, this study attempted to present a series of such pictures in order to identify trends over time. The fairly arbitrary decision was taken to divide the period under consideration into three 'publication windows': 1984-1994, 1995-2002, 2003-2009. The study revealed that the most productive areas were 'Information Service', followed by 'Information Organization', and 'Information System'. The most productive sub-areas were 'Library Service', 'User Study', 'Automatic Document Analysis', 'ILS', 'Thesaurus/Ontology', and 'Digital Library'. From the comparisons of intellectual structures of title keywords, the key research area in the field of Information Science was 'Information Retrieval'. The studies of IT applications and service system evaluation have been expanded.

  • This study sought to find out the status of medical libraries in Korea that provide information services related to the Covid-19 situation, and how the librarian's perception of the Covid-19 situation, the main body of the library's information provision, affects the provision of related information services. For this purpose, we checked the website for Covid-19 information service. In order to understand the degree of awareness of Covid-19, Grunig's Situational Theory was applied to classify four types of librarians according to the degree of problem recognition, constraint recognition, and involvement recognition, and to analyze how the three perceptions affect Covid-19 related information services. As a result, only 25 out of 144 korean medical libraries provided information services related to Covid-19. The librarian, the main agent of the library's information provision, found that the problem recognition and involvement recognition in the Covid-19 situation were high, constraint recognition were low, and the level of information service was very active. And only constraint recognition has been shown to have a significant impact on providing Covid-19 related information services. Further research when future sources are available and follow-up research on how librarians' perceptions affect library operations are also proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to introduce this language model in the era of generative AI such as ChatGPT, and to provide direction for data literacy education components in libraries using it. To this end, the following three research questions are proposed. First, the technical features of ChatGPT-like language models are examined, and then, it is argued that data literacy education is necessary for the proper and accurate use of information by users using a service platform based on generative AI technology. Finally, for library data literacy education in the ChatGPT era, it is proposed a data literacy education scheme including seven components such as data understanding, data generation, data collection, data verification, data management, data use and sharing, and data ethics. In conclusion, since generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT are expected to have a significant impact on users' information utilization, libraries should think about the advantages, disadvantages, and problems of these technologies first, and use them as a basis for further improving library information services.

  • This study investigates user behavior in library spaces through the lens of AI camera analytics. By leveraging the face recognition and tracking capabilities of AI cameras, we accurately identified the gender and age of visitors and meticulously collected video data to track their movements. Our findings revealed that female users slightly outnumbered male users and the dominant age group was individuals in their 30s. User visits peaked between Tuesday to Friday, with the highest footfall recorded between 14:00 and 15:00 pm, while visits decreased over the weekend. Most visitors utilized one or two specific spaces, frequently consulting the information desk for inquiries, checking out/returning items, or using the rest area for relaxation. The library stacks were used approximately twice as much as they were avoided. The most frequented subject areas were Philosophy(100), Religion(200), Social Sciences(300), Science(400), Technology(500), and Literature(800), with Literature(800) and Religion(200) displaying the most intersections with other areas. By categorizing users into five clusters based on space utilization patterns, we discerned varying objectives and subject interests, providing insights for future library service enhancements. Moreover, the study underscores the need to address the associated costs and privacy concerns when considering the broader application of AI camera analytics in library settings.

  • This study is to evaluate whether economies of scale exist in four categories of university libraries in the Korea. Regression analysis is used to fit a log-log equation to the total budget-output (total circulation, interlibrary lending and borrowing, reference transactions, hours opened, volumes added, automation and information indicator) for all the types of libraries. In results of the analysis, returns to scale are almost constant in the national and public libraries and larger libraries. But there is presence of economics of scale in private libraries and all of the libraries. Except for hours opened, economies of scale decrease more rapidly.

  • The purpose of the study is to identify the degree of relevancy on the facilities for the older persons in the public library buildings. To achieve the purpose, the study has researched and analyzed' the guidelines of the law contributing to the convenience of the handicapped, older persons, pregnant women etc(1999)' for the older persons accessing to the facilities in the public library buildings. And then, the older persons' physical standard sizes in 'Size Korea(1997)' are researched and reconfigured. The study has selected the 10 kinds in such facilities as followed : Door, Accessible Route, Stair, Elevator, Escalator, Ramp, Toilet Stall, Urinal, Table, and Post Box. As the result, the study has identified the relevancies of each facilities based on the older persons's physical standard sizes.
