  • This study was designed to find the characteristics of mathematical errors and discourse in simultaneous equations and inequalities for migrant students from North Korea. 5 sample students participated, who attended in an alternative school for the migrant students from North Korea at the study in Seoul, Korea. A total of 8 lesson units were performed as an extra curriculum activity once a week during the 1st semester, 2011. The results indicated that students showed technical errors, encoding errors, misunderstood symbols, misinterpreted language, and misunderstood Chines characters of Koreans and the discourse levels improved from the zero level to the third level, but the scenes of the third level did not constantly happen. Nevertheless, the components of discourse, explanation & justification, were activated and as a result, evaluation & elaboration increased in ERE pattern on communication.

  • This paper discusses the type of discourse associated with mental illness and individuals with mental illness in the context of TV documentary. Discourse is an linguistic product which prescribes and interprets the reality and reconstructs the reality systematically. Therefore, TV documentary contents illuminate the dominant discourse associate with mental illness through the diverse types of representation. We picked four TV documentaries from each public channels and analyzed these documentaries using Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis. Faircough suggests the analysis frame consisting of three level. The analysis reveals that TV documentaries produce the discourse "the Completion of Distinction" associated with mental illness and individuals with mental illness. TV documentaries suggest the reason why we distinct them from us in textual level. In discourse practice level, they suggest the method and the principal agent of distinction. For social practice, TV documentaries reinforce the dual attitude of viewer. Alternative discourse associated with mental illness and individuals with mental illness will be constructed when individuals with mental illness recovers the status of principal agents and produces strong voices about themselves.

  • Teachers' questioning plays an important role in mathematics teaching and learning by asking students to react or to participate in mathematical discourse. Previous studies on teachers' questioning have not focused on how to questioning to formulate an effective mathematical discourse which is contributed by students because studies mostly analyzed and categorized teachers' questions according to cognitive levels of questions without consideration of context. Therefore, this study explored characteristics of teachers' questioning to formulate an effective characteristics of teachers' questioning to formulate an effective mathematical discourse in mathematics classrooms. By reviewing and analyzing mathematics discourse and studies on teachers' questioning theoretically, we presented openness, sharedness, and productivity as characteristics of teachers' questioning. Through a middle school mathematics teacher's case, we examined three characteristics were necessary to formulate an effective mathematical discourse. Based on results from theoretical analysis and case analysis, we discussed that openness, sharedness, and productivity would be useful as a framework to analyze teachers' questioning.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine not only students' cognition in the mathematical error-finding activity of the concept of irrational numbers, but also the students' learning stance regarding the use of errors and a teacher's questioning strategies that lead to changes in the level of mathematical discourse. To this end, error-finding individual activities, group activities, and additional interviews were conducted with 133 middle school students, and students' cognition and the teacher's questioning strategies for changes in students' learning stance and levels of mathematical discourse were analyzed. As a result of the study, students' cognition focuses on the symbolic representation of irrational numbers and the representation of decimal numbers, and they recognize the existence of irrational numbers on a number line, but tend to have difficulty expressing a number line using figures. In addition, the importance of the teacher's leading and exploring questioning strategy was observed to promote changes in students' learning stance and levels of mathematical discourse. This study is valuable in that it specified the method of using errors in mathematics teaching and learning and elaborated the teacher's questioning strategies in finding mathematical errors.

  • The two most influential rationales for the 21st century science curriculum reform can be said to be core competence and scientific literacy. However, the relationship between the two has not been scrutinized but remained speculative - and this has made the harmonization of the general guideline and subject-matter curriculum difficult in Korean national curriculum system. This study compares the two discourses to derive implications for future science curriculum development. This study took a literature research approach. In chapter II, national curriculum or standards, position papers, and research articles were reviewed to delineate the historical development of the discourses. In chapter III and IV, the intersections of those two discourses are delineated. In chapter III, the commonalities of the two discourses are explicated with regard to crisis rhetoric, multi-faceted meanings (individual, community, and global aspects), organization of subject-matter content and teaching and learning method, and the role of high-stake exams. In chapter IV, their respective strengths and weaknesses are juxtaposed. In chapter V, it is suggested that understanding scientific literacy and core competence discourses to have a family resemblance as 21st century science curriculum reform rationale, after Wittgenstein and Kuhn. Finally, the ways to resolve the conflict between the two ideas from the general guideline and subject-matter curriculum over crisis rhetoric were explored.

  • This is to review the reform of the governance for science and technology advanced by the Noh Moo Hyun government. The reform mainly included introducing the vice premiership for science and technology, strengthening the coordinative function of the National Science and Technology Committee over the public R&D budget and programs, and establishing the Office of Science and Technology Innovation under the vice premier for science and technology. The reform aims to improve not only the policy coordinative mechanism but policy discourse mechanism over the enhanced science and technology policy. This paper argues that Noh Moo Hyun Government's reform of the governance for science and technology was not successful. The reason is that the reform targeted mainly to improve the policy coordination among government departments concerning science and technology policy. But it was nearly neglected to make effective the policy discourse mechanism linking the state actors and societal actors.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the characteristics of mathematical discourse about the length in the class that learns the length of the curve defined by definite integral. For this purpose, this study examined the discourse about length by paying attention to the usage of the word 'length' in the class participants based on the communicative approach. As a result of the research, it was confirmed that the word 'length' is used in three usages - colloquial, operational, and structural usage - in the process of communicating with the discourse participants. Particularly, each participant did not recognize the difference even though they used different usage words, and this resulted in ineffective communication. This study emphasizes the fact that the difference in usage of words used by participants reduces the effectiveness of communication. However, if discourse participants pay attention to the differences of these usages and recognize that there are different discourses, this study suggests that meta - level learning can be possible by overcoming communication discontinuities and resolving conflicts.
