A Research Trend on Lunar Resources and Lunar Base (달 자원 탐사와 달 기지 연구 동향)

  • A new era with the $4^{th}$ Industrial Revolution certainly brings new opportunities for human to explore human's activities outside of the Earth. After the Apollo program, exploration for lunar resources and establishment of lunar base seem to be in reality. This could be due to new findings by the LCROSS and LRO proving the advanced scientific development and new scientific results about the moon from Asian countries including China with Chang'E missions. It is expected that fossil fuels will be in shortage in the near future and at this time, Helium-3 could be an energy resource as a replacement of the fossil fuels. At present it is well known that countries like Russia, USA, and Europe will continue to investigate on lunar exploration especially with landers toward future human activities on the moon to establish a lunar base. With this point of view, it is important for human to understand lunar resources and prepare for prospective utilization of lunar resources. This review paper considers on a point of view in both lunar resource exploration and establishment of lunar base.

  • One-way laser ranging technology is applied for the precise orbit determination of LRO, which is the first trial for supporting the missions of lunar or planetary spacecraft. In this paper, LRO payload and ground system are discussed for LRO laser ranging, and some errors effecting on time of flight and tracking mount accuracy are analyzed. Additionally several technologies are also analyzed to make laser pulses shot from ground stations to arrive in the LRO earth window. Measurement data of LRO laser ranging verified that these technologies could be implemented for one-way laser ranging of lunar spacecraft.

Optimal Earth-Moon Trajectory Design using Constant and Variable Low Thrust (등저추력과 가변저추력을 이용한 지구-달 천이궤적 설계)

  • For preparing Korean lunar missions, optimal Earth-Moon transfer trajectory is designed using continuous low thrust. Using both constant and variable low thrusting method, "End-to-End" mission analysis is made from beginning of the Earth departure to the final lunar arrival. Spacecraft's equations of motion is expressed using N-body dynamics including the gravitational effects due to the Earth, Moon, Sun and also with Earth's $J_2$ effects. Planets' exact locations are computed accurately with JPL's DE405 ephemeris. As a results, optimal thrust steering angle's characteristics are discovered which showed almost tangential direction burns at the near of central planets. Also, it is confirmed that variable low thrusting method is more efficient than constant thrusting method, and can save about 5% of fuel consumption. Presented algorithm and various results will give numerous insights into the future Korea's Lunar missions using low thrust engines. Also, it is expected to be used as a basis of more detailed mission analyzing tool.

  • 우리나라는 2단계에 걸친 달 탐사 계획을 세우고 있다. ETRI는 국내 달 탐사 프로그램에 참여하여 우주인터넷 통신기술 및 탐사선 간 통신을 위한 Proximity-1 통신장치를 개발할 계획이다. 본고에서는 우주인터넷의 기술개요와 기술동향을 알아보고 국내 개발계획에 대하여 살펴본다. 아울러 Proximity-1의 기술개요, 규격 및 국내개발 방향에 대하여 함께 살펴보고자 한다.

  • The mission of the high-resolution camera for the lunar exploration is to provide 3D topographic information. It enables us to find the appropriate landing site or to control accurate landing by the short distance stereo image in real-time. In this paper, the ground verification and analysis system using the multi-application stereo camera to develop the high-resolution camera for the lunar exploration are proposed. The mission test items and test plans for the mission requirement are provided and the test results are analyzed by the ground verification and analysis system. For the realistic simulation for the lunar orbiter, the target area that has similar characteristics with the real lunar surface is chosen and the aircraft flight is planned to take image of the area. The DEM is extracted from the stereo image and compose three dimensional results. The high-resolution camera mission requirements for the lunar exploration are verified and the ground data analysis system is developed.

  • 태양을 중심으로 그 주위를 돌고 있는 혹성은 모두 9개, 지구까지 합하면 10개라고도 하고 달을 빼고 9개라고도 한다. 사람이 달 표면에 처음으로 착륙한 것이 1969년, 그로부터 30년이 가까워오는 지금 사람은 달 이외에 금성, 화성, 목성, 토성 등 여러 혹성을 탐사하는데 성공했지만 구체적으로 사람이 착륙한 곳은 달 밖에 없다.

  • One of the purposes of space exploration is to be able to utilize the unlimited natural resources in the universe. For this purpose, plans for lunar and mars bases have been proposed by leading nations. In order to construct bases and search for resources, it is necessary to employ and develop rovers for surface navigation and exploration. With proper knowledge about Lunar surface, technology for lunar rover development can be established without serious obstacles, since robot technology for rover development has been well prepared in Korea. In this paper, lunar rovers and mars rovers developed and planned by other countries as well as the current status of robot technology in Korea have been analyzed.

  • Prospecting ice on Moon requires drilling systems to obtain subsurface samples and measure composition of ice deposits. Landers and rovers need to be equipped with drilling equipment in order to analyze the ice and subsurface resources located at the poles of Moon. These devices must be small, lightweight, low-power, highly efficient and high-performance units in order to function properly under the extreme conditions of the lunar environment. Researchers have developed a prototype drilling apparatus that is able to operate in atmospheric and cold environments. Newly developed drilling system in Korea, which is capable of performing not only sampling but also subsurface investigation, is introduced.

  • 달 및 행성탐사선에 탑재된 적외선 분광기는 태양계 행성들의 지표 및 대기 성분 관측을 위해 널리 활용되고 있다. 적외선 분광기 관측 영역 중 $3-5{\mu}m$ 파장 대에서는 행성의 지표 및 대기에 존재하는 물(얼음), 이산화탄소, 일산화탄소, 메탄, 중수와 같은 여러 성분의 분광선 관측이 가능하다. 이 파장대를 관측한 해외 탐사선 탑재체 사례로는 화성의 경우 Mars Express에 탑재된 OMEGA와 PFS, 소행성의 경우 ROSETTA에 탑재된 VIRTIS 등이 해당된다. $3-5{\mu}m$ 파장대의 분광기는 국내에서 개발 사례가 없으며 해외에서도 달 탐사선에 탑재된 바가 없어 달 얼음과 관련된 다른 파장대의 자료와 상호보완이 가능한 자료를 제공할 것으로 기대된다. 본 연구에서는 달 및 행성탐사를 위한 $3-5{\mu}m$ 파장 영역을 탐사하는 적외선 분광기의 요구사양을 그 과학임무에 비추어 제안하고자 한다.
