Energy dissipation capacity and earthquake responses of steel structures installed with unbonded braces(UB) were investigated. Parametric studies were performed for a single-degree-of-freedom structure under harmonic loads, and optimum yield strength of unbonded braces were derived. Nonlinear dynamic time history analyses were carried out to investigate the seismic response of multi-story model structures with UB having various size and strength. Various techniques were applied to determine proper story-wise distribution of UB in multi-story structures. The analysis results show that the maximum displacements of structures generally decrease as the stiffness of UB increases. However for some natural frequencies and seismic loads the maximum displacement and accumulated damage increases as the stiffness of UB increases.

In this paper, we derived the Y-parameter of the recently reported Balun-BPF with a dual mode ring resonator by using the network analysis method. Using the derived Y-parameter we verified that the Balun-BPF structure satisfy the balun conditions. In order to design the Balun-BPF with arbitrary characteristics using the standard BPF design method with ease we derived the immittance slope parameters of the dual mode ring resonator with a load. The notch frequencies are also predicted. By designing with the proposed equations, simulating with a circuit simulator, fabricated and measured a Balun-BPF we confirmed the validation of the equations. The measured data shows bandwidth of 71 MHz and insertion loss of 0.92 dB at the center frequency of 2.46 GHz. It shows the phase imbalance of $174{\sim}181$ degree and the magnitude imbalance within 0.5 dB.

In this study, It is developed a retrofitting procedure of RC column with rectangular section to archive the target displacement at failure. Nonlinear behavior of the column is considered as the equivalent linear system. First, target displacement is determined, and then elastic displacement spectrum is constructed to estimate the equivalent natural vibration period of the SDOF system. After natural vibration period is determined, required strength is calculated using secant stiffness based on the mass of system. In accordance with, obtained force-displacement relationship through non-linear fiber based section analysis, retrofit design was carried out to meet required strength. As a result, retrofitted RC column can confirm that the improved seismic performance. It is observed that the proposed design procedure can be applicable to seismic retrofitting design of columns.

Shaking table tests are carried out on a single-degree-of-freedom mass that is equipped with a hybrid base isolation system. The isolator consists of a set of four specially-designed friction pendulum systems (FPS) and a magnetorheological (MR) damper. The structure and its hybrid isolation system are subjected to various intensities of near- and far-fault earthquakes on a large shake table. The proposed fuzzy controller uses feedback from displacement or acceleration transducers attached to the structure to modulate resistance of the semi-active damper to motion. Results from several types of passive and semi-active control strategies are summarized and compared. The study shows that a combination of FPS isolators and an adjustable MR damper can effectively provide robust control of vibration for a large full-scale structure undergoing a wide variety of seismic loads.

In this study, a seismic design methodology for friction dampers based on the story shear force distribution of an elastic building structure is proposed. First, using two normalization methods for the slip-load of a friction damper, numerical analyses of various single-degree-of-freedom systems are peformed. From those analyses, the effect of the slip-load and the brace stiffness was investigated and the optimal silliness ratio of the brace versus original structure was found. Second, from the numerical analysis for five multi-story building structures with different natural frequency and the number of story, reasonable decision method for the total number of installation floor, location of installation and distribution of the slip-loads are drawn. In addition, an empirical equation on the optimal number of installation floor is proposed. Finally, the superiority of the proposed method compared to the existing design method is verified from the numerical analysis using real earthquake data.

Recently, awareness of the public about the explosion damage has increased due to the increased risk of terrorism. The criteria for blast-resistance design is not sufficient in Korea, it is necessary to develop blast-resistance design for the stability and safety of building by static analysis of current blast-resistance design. In addition, as the increase of earthquake occurrence necessitates the seismic design, it is studied to judge the blast-resistance performance of members applying seismic design without blast-resistance design. Currently, the general analysis of blast load is to refer to UFC 3-340-02 manual. Blast-resistance performance was studied by applying characteristics of blast load through UFC 3-340-02 manual, beam converted into equivalent SDOF System. It is proved that blast-resistance performance is improved when seismic detail is applied considering the maximum deflection of normal, intermediate, and special moment frames.

To dale, lots of types of tuned mass dampers are developed and investigated to reduce dynamic responses of a structure due to various causes. In this study, control performance of semi-active tuned mass damper(STMD), that can change the damping of tuned mass damper in real time based on structural responses, was investigated with respect to various types of excitation employing numerical simulation. Skyhook control algorithm was used to appropriately modulate the damping ratio of semi-active damper that composes STMD. The control effectiveness of a STMD under harmonic and random excitation were evaluated using a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structure in comparison with a conventional passive tuned mass damper (TMD). The robustness of a STMD and a passive TMD were compared along with the variation of the mass of a SDOF structure. The control performance of STMD using magnetorheological (MR) damper was also investigated in this study. Based on the numerical studios, it was shown that the control effectiveness of the STMD was significantly superior to that of a passive TMD with respect to harmonic and random excitation.

Soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) is one of the important issues in the seismic design for evaluating the exact behavior of the system. A seismic design of a structure can be more precise and economical, provided that the effect of SFSI is properly taken into account. In this study, a series of the dynamic centrifuge tests were performed to compare the seismic response of the single degree of freedom(SDOF) structure on the various types of the foundation. The shallow and pile foundations were made up of diverse mass and different conjunctive condition, respectively. The test specimen consisted of dry sand deposit, foundation, and SDOF structure in a centrifuge box. Several types of earthquake motions were sequentially applied to the test specimen from weak to strong intensity of them, which is known as a stage test. Results from the centrifuge tests showed that the seismic responses of the SDOF structure on the shallow foundation and disconnected pile foundation decreased by the foundation rocking. On the other hand, those on the connected pile foundation gradually increased with intensity of input motion. The allowable displacement of the foundation under the strong earthquake, the shallow and the disconnected pile foundation, have an advantage in dissipating the earthquake energy for the seismic design.

Rocking behavior of shallow foundation during the earthquake can reduce the seismic load of the superstructure. The dynamic centrifuge tests were performed to investigate the availability of using rocking behavior for the weathered soil condition. The centrifuge test model was composed of the weathered soil, shallow foundation and single degree of freedom structure. And the accelerations of soil, foundation and structure, and the foundation settlement were measured during the earthquake. From the test result, the seismic load of the structure for the strong earthquake input was reduced by the rocking behavior with foundation uplift and the maximum foundation settlement was less than 0.5% of the foundation width. This shows the potential that the rocking foundation concept can be used in the economical seismic design of foundation for the weathered soil in the future with additional research and verification.
Constructing the maximum displacement and shear force database for the seismic performance of building with soil-structure interaction under varied earthquake scenarios and geotechnical conditions is critical in developing the neural network-based prediction models. However, using the available 3D FEM-based computer simulation techniques causes high computation costs in developing the database. This study introduces the framework of developing the artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the seismic performance of building at given Poisson's ratio and shear wave velocity of soil. The simple Single-Degree-Of-Freedom system was used to develop the database and the performance of the developed neural network model is discussed through the evaluated coefficient of determination (R2). In addition, ANN models were developed for 90~100% percentile of the database to assess the accuracy of the developed ANN models in each percentile.
