Discrimination between trend and difference stationary processes based on adaptive lasso (Adaptive lasso를 이용하여 추세-정상시계열과 차분-정상시계열을 판별하는 방법에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, we study a method to discriminate between trend stationary and difference stationary processes. Since a crucial ingredient of this discrimination is to determine the existence of unit root, we can use a unit root testing strategy. So, we introduce a discrimination based on unit root testing and propose the method using the adaptive lasso. Our Monte Carlo simulation experiments show that the adaptive lasso improves the discrimination accuracy when the process is trend stationary, but has lower accuracy than unit root strategy where the process is difference stationary.

An Empirical Study on the Causalities and Effects between Inbound Tourism and Service Industry GDP in China (국제 인바운드 관광과 중국내 서비스 산업 GDP간의 인과관계 및 효과에 관한 실증연구)

  • This papers studies the causalities and effects on the relationship between inbound tourism(TOU) and the production amount of service industry in China, using the unit root test, the Granger causality test, the cointegration test, and VECM. we take their natural logarithm and define them as TOU and SGDP: these represent the distributed variable based the lagged values of the number of international tourists by continent and real production amount in service industry of China, respectively. The results of empirical study of this papers are as follows: Firstly, in the unit root test, we found that each time series was unstable one that has unit root. This result made me use 1st differenced data for this empirical study. Secondly, in the Granger casuality test, the study results show that there is unilateral casuality relation between DLSGDP-$DLTOU_i$ except DLSGDP-DLTOUL model for the same time, while no casuality relation between DLTOU-DLSGDP for all models of China. Thirdly, there is cointegration relation between all models for the period of 1980-2008.

An Analysis of Balassa-Samuelson Effect by Panel Cointegration Test (패널공적분검정을 통한 발라사-사무엘슨 효과 분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Balassa-Samuelson effect that real exchange rate could deviate from its long-run equilibrium. To analyze this effect, I estimated the long-run relationship between real exchange and productivity using the dynamic panel ordinary least square(DOLS) and panel error correction model(ECM) after conducting the unit root and cointegration test. The results show that all variables except for the real exchange rate have the unit root. Then I conducted the cointegration test to find out whether there exist the stable long-run relationships. The results show that the variables are cointegrated and significant statistically. The DOLS and ECM methods are used to estimate the coefficient of the cointegrated variables. The major finding are that the estimates are statistically significant and that they show the same sign as the economic theory predicts.

The Long-Run Relationship between House Prices and Economic Fundamentals: Evidence from Korean Panel Data (주택가격과 기초경제여건의 장기 관계: 우리나라의 패널 자료를 이용하여)

  • This paper adopts recently developed panel unit root test that is cross-sectionally robust. Cointegration test is also used to find whether regional house prices are in line with gross regional domestic production (GRDP) in the long run in Korea during 1989-2009. Based on the panel VECM and the panel ARDL models, we examine causal relationships among the variables and estimate the long-run elasticity. We find evidence of cointegration and bidirectional causal relationships between regional house prices and GRDP. The results of long-run estimates, using both fixed effect and ARDL models, show that house prices positively and significantly influence on the GRDP and vice versa. Together with these results, the findings of ARDL-ECM imply that there exists a long-run equilibrium relationship between house prices and regional economic variables even if there is a possibility of short-run deviation from its long-run path.

Empirical Study on the Semi-Endogenous Growth Theory and Fully Endogenous Growth Theory in OECD Countries (OECD국가의 준 내생적 성장이론 및 완전한 내생적 성장이론에 대한 실증고찰)

  • This paper examines the recently empirical test for the two types of endogenous growth models, which one is more fitted to real data. We adopt the non-stationary panel data methodologies for seeking empirical implication by using productivity and R&D data in the OECD over the past two decades. The Empirical tests show that there is a robust relationship Total Factor Productivity and R&D variables implied by semi-endogenous growth model. The relationship suggested by fully endogenous growth theory, however, is sensitive to R&D variables. Therefore, the estimation results provide empirical evidence in favour of endogenous growth theory of R&D expenditure role for sustaining economic growth. The sustained Total Factor Productivity, however, is maintained by more increasing R&D inputs for overcoming diminishing return to R&D efforts.

  • The objective of this study is to estimate highway trip demand functions in Korea. In order to estimate them, I propose various socio-economic variables that affect the highway trip demand functions. I use the unit root test for each variable and the cointegration test to and the relationships among variables. Finally, I use the vector error correction model, to get the highway trip demand functions. The implication which I derive from the estimation is that real GDP and highway tolls have positive and negative effects, respectively. on the highway trip demand.

An Empirical Study on the Causalities and Effects between International Trade and Economic Growth in China (중국의 국제무역과 경제성장간의 인과관계 및 파급효과)

  • This papers studies the causalities and effects on the relationship between international trade and economic growth in China for the period of 1950-2007, using the unit root test, the Granger causality test, the cointegration test, VAR model, and VECM. The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, in the unit root test, I found that each time series was unstable one that has unit root. Secondly, in the Granger Causality test, this papers shows that variable dlexp and dlinp influence on dlgdp and dlgdd, while bilateral causality relation between dlexp and dlgdp, dlexp and dlgdd for the whole period, for the whole period, pre-reform period and post-reform period. Thirdly, there is no cointegraion relation between lgdp(or dlgdp, lgdd, dlgdd) and lexp, linp for lgdd-limp in the whole period, and pre-reform period, while no cointegration relation for the post-reform period. Finally, in the impulse-response test, it was proved that lgdp represents (-) correlation with lexp for the whole period. Thorough the variance decomposition test, it was proved that linp(or dlinp) is the most affected variable of the each data and relation between linp(or dlinp) and lexp(or dlexp) has become bigger recently.

A Study on the Causal Relationship Between Electricity Consumption and Output in Manufacturing Sectors of Korea (국내 제조업종별 전력소비와 경제산출간 인과관계 분석)

  • This study analyzed causal relationship between electricity consumption and economic output (GDP) for Korea from 2001 to 2014 employing the vector error-correction model estimation by manufacturing sector. The results of unit-roots tests show that all sectoral GDP and electricity consumptions were not stationary. And cointegration tests show that processed foods, Wood Pulp Paper, electricity apparatus, Precision Medical sectors had a linear combinations in the long run between electricity consumptions and economic growth. With respect to the direction of causality, manufacturing sector has a uni-directional running from economic output (GDP) to electricity consumption in short term. The results of study show that sectoral causal relation were different each other in short term and long term. These findings imply that electricity demand management policy focusing on efficiency improvement is necessary to minimize negative impacts on economic growth and to adopt suitable structural policies can induce energy conservation.

A study on the slope sign test for explosive autoregressive models (기울기 부호를 이용한 폭발자기회귀검정 연구)

  • In random walk hypothesis, we assume that current change of financial time series is independent of past values. It is interpreted as an existency of a unit root in ARMA models and many researches have been focused on whether ${\rho}$ < 1 or not. If some financial data are generated from an explosive autoregressive model, the chance of a bubble economy increases. We have to find the symptoms of it in advance. Since some well-known parameter estimators contain the parameter itself and other statistic is constructed under a specific parameter structure assumption, those are difficut to be adopted. In this paper we investigate a test for explosive autoregressive models using slope signs. We found the properties of the slope sign test statistic under both independent error and correlated error conditions, mainly by simulations.
