  • Reshoring makes slab deflect and support its own weight. The construction loads on the slabs in lower levels decrease using the reshoring. Simplified analysis proposed by ACI 347.2R-05 showed that if the reshoring is applied, construction loads on slabs and shores, and quantities of forms and shores decreased by 40%, 23%, 40%, and 50%, respectively. Shores' loads were comparatively measured on site. The measured reshore load was half of the load before removing the shores and was also lower than the measured shore load by 35%. To verify the safety of the reshoring, deflections of beams and strains of beam longitudinal bars were also measured. The maximum deflection was only L/5000 and the maximum bar strain was only 3.6% of the yield strain. Consequently, reshoring neither cause problems on the safety nor serviceability. In addition, the beam load was expected from the measured shores' loads and it coincides well with the predicted value by the simplified analysis of ACI 347.2R-05.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of average and cyclic shear stresses on the undrained failure behaviors of dense marine silty sand by using the Cyclic Direct Simple Shear apparatus. The results show that when the average shear stress ratio is zero, symmetric cyclic shear deformation is the major component of deformation, and permanent shear deformation is relatively small. On the other hand, when the average shear stress ratio is larger than zero, asymmetric permanent shear deformation is the major component, and cyclic shear deformation does not change much as the number of cyclic loads increases. The average shear stress ratio has less effects on the number of cyclic loads needed to fail, as compared with the cyclic shear stress ratio. The proposed stress-dependent failure contour can effectively be used to assess the cyclic shear strength of soil beneath the foundation for the design of offshore structures.

  • In this work, a structural design on 500W class horizontal axis wind turbine blade using natural-fibre composite is performed. The structural design result of flax composite blade is compared with the result of glass composite blade. The structural design of the wind turbine blade is carried out using the simplified methods such as the netting rule and the rule of mixture. The structural safety of the designed blade structure is investigated through the various load cases, stress, deformation and buckling analyses using the commercial FEM. The structural test of the manufactured prototype blade was performed to confirm the structural analysis results including strains, natural frequencies and deformations. According to the comparison results, it was confirmed that the analysis results are well agreed with the experimental results.

  • The compression and tension test were performed to evaluate the stiffnesses of the conical composite lattice structures and results of test were compared with finite element analysis results. Because of difficulty to perform simple tension and compression test due to conical shape, suitable specimens and jig for test were made. Subelements extracted from the structure were prepared for compression test. Compression test of subelement was performed and compressive strains in fiber direction were measured. Compressive stiffness of the helical rib was verified by finite element analysis results. For stiffness of hoop rib, hoop ring specimens were extracted from the structure. Tension test of hoop ring specimen was performed to apply bending deformation to hoop rib. Stiffness of hoop rib was verified by finite element model considering various fiber volume fraction in thickness direction.

  • The optical character recognition (OCR) is a technique to extract and recognize texts from images. It is an important preprocessing step in data analysis since most actual text information is embedded in images. Many OCR engines have high recognition accuracy for images where texts are clearly separable from background, such as white background and black lettering. However, they have low recognition accuracy for images where texts are not easily separable from complex background. To improve this low accuracy problem with complex images, it is necessary to transform the input image to make texts more noticeable. In this paper, we propose a method to segment an input image into text lines to enable OCR engines to recognize each line more efficiently, and to determine the final output by comparing the recognition rates of CLAHE module and Two-step module which distinguish texts from background regions based on image processing techniques. Through thorough experiments comparing with well-known OCR engines, Tesseract and Abbyy, we show that our proposed method have the best recognition accuracy with complex background images.

  • Background: Atrial fibrillation is associated with several complications such as cerebro-vascular accidents and peripheral arterial embolism. Most of the patients who have this arrhythmia chronically feel their heart beating and so they are frightened; therefore, the quality of a patient's life is decreased. The purpose of this article is to determine the long term results of a modified Maze procedure and the factors that influence the success of the procedure. Material and Method: This study enrolled 88 patients who underwent the modified Maze with using cryoablation between June, 2001 and February, 2007. The 88 consecutive patients were divided into two groups ac cording to how the pulmonary veins were isolated, that is, with or without cryoablation. There were 58 patients who were isolated by cutting and sewing in the right pulmonary veins and by cyroablation in the left pulmonary veins in group 1 (group 1, n=58), and 30 patients who underwent isolation by cryoablation in the right & left pulmonary veins were placed in group 2 (group 2, n=30). The ECG was checked at discharge to determine the sinus conversion rate and we followed up the patients to determine whether or not the patients maintained sinus rhythm. We also checked the ECG at the last visit to determine the patients' heart rhythm. Result: The mean follow up time was $44.3{\pm}19.2$ months. At discharge, 72.4% of the patients in group 1 were in proper sinus rhythm and 66.7% of the patients in group 2 were in proper sinus rhythm. At the last follow up, 81% of the patients in group 1 were in normal sinus rhythm and 60% of the patients in group 2 were in normal sinus rhythm. When we analyzed the data via the Kaplan-Meier method, 86.5% of the patients were free from atrial fibrillation (% free from AF) at 1 year, 80% of the patients were free from atrial fibrillation at 5 year in group 1 and 70% of the patients were free from atrial fibrillation at 1 year and 51 % of the patients in group 2 were free from atrial fibrillation at 5 year. Conclusion: The modified Maze technique using cryoablation was a simple and effective procedure. But the success rate of the Maze technique using cryoblation is lower than that of the standard Maze III. The method using cryoablation shorten the operation time, but we must conduct more studies to get a better result of the modified Maze technique with using cryoablation.

  • Based on an estimating method for post-cyclic strength and stiffness with cyclic triaxial tests proposed by one of the authors, cyclic Direct Simple Shear (DSS) tests were carried out to confirm whether the method can be adapted to DSS test on fine-grained soils: silty clay, plastic silt, and non-plastic silt. Results from cyclic and post-cyclic DSS tests were interpreted by a modified method as adopted for cyclic and post-cyclic triaxial tests. In particular, influence of plasticity index for fine-grained soils and initial static shear stress (ISSS) was emphasised. Findings obtained from the present study are: (i) liquefaction strength ratio of fine-grained soils decreases with decreasing plasticity index and increasing ISSS; (ii) plasticity index and ISSS did not markedly influence relation between equivalent cyclic stiffness and shear strain relations; (iii) the higher the plasticity index of fine-grained soils is, the less the strength ratio decreases with increment of a normalcies excess pore water pressure (NEPWP); (iv) stiffness ratio of plastic silt has large activity decrease rapidly with increasing excess pore water pressure; and (v) post-cyclic strength and stiffness results from DSS tests agree well with those predicted by the method modified from a procedure used for triaxial test results.
