The main purpose of this paper is to present both fundamental and some higher natural frequencies of catenary arcs. The differential equations governing planar free vibrations for these arcs are derived, in which the rotatory inertia is included, as non-dimensional forms and solved numerically to obtain frequencies and mode shapes. The hinged-hinged and clamped-clamped end constraints are applied in numerical examples. The lowest four natural frequencies are reported as the functions of non -dimensional system parameters; the slenderness ratio and the rise to span length ratio. The effects of rotatory inertia on natural frequencies are reported and some typical mode shapes are also presented.
In a steel structural system, noncomposite form deck one-way slab is the plate element supported by four-edged steel beams with unequaled stiffness. However, design criterion has analyzed the one-way slab as the continuous beam. Because the end beams that support the one-way slab have elastic supports t hat cause different deflections according to the support conditions and locations, the bending moments corresponding to the support ic support effect is not considered in the design criterion. Accordingly, to conduct a reasonable estimation of approximate moment coefficients considering the unequaled elastic support conditions, this study analyzes and estimates various models with varia bles for the ratios of live load to dead load and pattern arangements of live loads and span lengths. The analytical methods considering the finite three-dimensional plate element, the two-dimensional elastic support and the infinite stifnes suport are performed.
The current design practice of electric transmission tower is based on the allowable stress design. However, it is difficult to find the cause behind a transmission tower's collapse by the above design approach as the collapse is caused by large secondary deformations based on and geometrical nonlinear behavior.influence factor for the nonlinear behavior is mainly residual stress, initial imperfection and end restraints on members. In this study, the necessity of the nonlinear analysis is examined through the comparison between elastic ana the nonlinear analysis, a new analytical method (equivalent nonlinear analysis technique) is proposed. To confirm the reliability of the proposed method, the computed ultimate load of the transmission tower using the method was compared with that of the nonlinear finite element analysis. Effects of parameters, such as compressive force and the slenderness ratio of the brace member on the main post member, were investigated. The effective member length according to influential parameters was formulated in table form for practical purposes.

Resonance of the bridge can be occurred with the coincidence between a natural frequency of the bridge and a crossing frequency of moving loads which is determined from the speed and effective beating interval of the vehicle. In case of the railway bridge, the effective beating interval of the vehicle is fixed under the passage of specific trains. In the present study, resonance and cancellation of the bridge subjected to moving high-speed train are analyzed with the variations of span length. A steel-concrete composite railway bridge is idealized by the combinations of plate elements and space frame elements. High-speed train is idealized with moving constant forces and a 3-dimensional full modelling. From analyzing dynamic responses of D.M.F of vertical displacement, maximum vertical acceleration of the slab, and end rotation according to the variations of span length of the bridge, design criteria of span length of the bridge which satisfies dynamic safety is discussed.

Steel truss outriggers can be replaced by reinforced concrete walls to control the lateral drift of tall buildings. When reinforced concrete outrigger walls are connected to perimeter columns, not only axial forces but also shear forces and moments can be induced on the perimeter columns. In this study, the shear force of the perimeter column due to the rotation of the outer edge of the outrigger wall is derived as analytic equations and the result is compared with the finite element analysis result. In the finite element analysis, the effects of connecting beams at each floor and the effect of modeling shear walls and outriggers with beam element and plane stress element was analyzed. The effect of the connecting beam was almost negligible and the plane stress element was determined to have greater stiffness than the beam element. The inter-story rotation and the shear force of the perimeter column due to the rotation of the outer edge of the outrigger wall was considerably smaller than the allowable value. Therefore, even if the outrigger wall made of reinforced concrete is applied to a tall building, it is considered that there is no need to study the shear force and moment induced in the perimeter columns.
T-shaped walls have different strength, stiffness and ductility in the two opposite directions parallel to the web when subjected to horizontal in-plane loads. When the flange is in tension, the extent that the flange reinforcement contributes to the flexural strength will be subjected to shear-lag effect. Because of this shear-lag effect, the flange may not participate fully in the action with the web, and the effective flange width is needed for predicting the actual strength and stiffness of structures. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effective flange width and actual strength of the T-shaped wall with Korean code specified detailing of the wall web. Three specimens were tested with cyclic lateral loading applied at top of the wall. A constant axial load of approximately 0.1f$\_$ck/$.$A$\_$g/ is maintained during the testing. Test results show that the effective flange width increases with increasing drift level, such that the entire overhanging flange of h/3 is effective at the maximum strength level. Therefore, the use of PCI or KBC(Korean Building Code) value of h/10 is unconservative with respect to detailing at the wall web boundary.

Both ends of the hoop reinforcement in the reinforced concrete (RC) columns subjected to lateral loading must necessarily be bent by 135° so as to ensure a sufficient level of ductility. However, as this reinforcement is extremely difficult to construct, this requirement is often not satisfied at construction sites. This study entailed an experimental investigation on RC columns subjected to cyclic lateral loading equipped with steel clip-type implements that were developed to replace the complicated 135° hoop reinforcement details. Four RC column specimens were manufactured, and the main test parameters included the use of high-strength concrete and steel clip-type implements. Furthermore, three-dimensional finite element models were employed to evaluate the structural performances of the test specimens via nonlinear analyses. The results of the test and finite element analyses indicate that the RC columns with the steel clip-type implements exhibit structural performances equal to or better than those with the 135° hoop reinforcement details. Further, the finite element analysis results agree well with the test results.
Plate bonding technique has been widely used in strengthening of existing concrete structures, although it has often a serious problem of premature falure such as interface separation and rip-off. However, this premature failure problem has not been well explored yet especially in view of local failure mechanism around the interface of plate ends. The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to identify the local failure of strengthened plates and to derive a separation criterion at the interface of plates. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program has been set up. The double lap pull-out tests considering pure shear force and half beam tests considering combined flexure-shear force were performed. The main experimental parameters include plate thickness, adhesive thickness, and plate end arrangement. The strains along the longitudinal direction of steel plates have been measured and the shear stress were calculated from those measures strains. The effects of plate thickness, bonded length, and plate end treatment have been also clarified from the present test results. Nonlinear finite element analysis has been performed and compared with test results. The Interface properties are also modeled to present the separation failure behavior of strengthened members. The cracking patterns as well as maximum failure loads agree well with test data. The relation between maximum shear and normal stresses at the interface has been derived to propose a separation failure criterion of strengthened members. The present study allows more realistic analysis and design of externally strengthened flexural member with steel plates.
The transfer of prestress force in pretensioned prestressed concrete (PSC) members is of great concern because it affects directly the distribution of stress around the transfer zone. The design provision of current design code on the transfer length considers only the prestress intensity and the diameter of prestressing steels. However, other factors such as concrete compressive strength and concrete cover may affect greatly the transfer length. The purpose of the present paper is to explore the various factors that affect the transfer length in pretensioned PSC members. The bond stress-slip relation between prestressing steel and concrete was modeled first from experimental data and then this model was incorporated into the interface element. The interface element was used to perform the finite element analysis for pretensioned PSC members. The results indicate that the compressive strength and concrete cover are also very important parameters which affect the transfer length greatly. This means that the current design code, which considers only the effective prestress and diameter of prestressing steel, must be improved to take into account the other important variables of compressive strength and concrete cover. The present study allows more realistic analysis and design of pretensioned PSC members.
Typical stratigraphic sequences of Paleozoic form the Baegunsan Syncline (equal to Hambaeg Syncline) and Taebaegsan Group is the basement in the southern part of Kangweon Province. Deformation pattern depends on their stratigraphic site and their internal properties. In the biotite schists and meta-sandstones of Pre-Cambrian sequences, flow folds and ptygmatic folds are developed, and high strain deformation is pervasive. Deformational patterns of Cambro-Ordovician are variable because of their various formations. Fracturing is pervasive in the Jangsan Quartzite and Daegi and Maggol Limestone. Welldeveloped slaty cleavage and angular folds of kink and chevron types are the prevailing structures of pelitic rocks. The most characteristic feature of limestone alternated with argillite is the "Compositional cleavage (Author's proposal)" known as the "Worm-eatern" structures. It was known that this structures have a sedimentary origin. But their preferred orienation of long axis of erosional lime holes, originated from tectonic deformation of folding. And this structures have the same character as the axial plane cleavages. Fracturing and long wave concentric folds are dominant characters of the Upper Paleozic sequences. In this area, two folds are superimposed. Field studying and analysis of structures show that the cross-folds of NS-direction are pervasive and were deformed by the EW-directional Baegunsan Syncline. The cross-folding is the major and penetrative deformation and prior to Baegunsan Syncline.
