A new finite element model will be presented to analyze the nonlinear behavior of RC beams and slabs strengthened by a patch repair. The numerical approach is based on the p-version degenerate shell element including theory of anisotropic laminated composites, theory of materially and geometrically nonlinear plates. In the nonlinear formulation of this model, the total Lagrangian formulation is adopted with large deflections and moderate rotations being accounted for in the sense of von Karman hypothesis. The material model is based on hardening rule, crushing condition, plate-end debonding strength model and so on. The Gauss-Lobatto numerical quadrature is applied to calculate the stresses at the nodal points instead of Gauss points. The validity of the proposed p-version nonlinear finite element model is demonstrated through the load-deflection curves, the ultimate loads, and the failure modes of RC beams or slabs bonded with steel plates or FRP plates compared with available result of experiment and other numerical methods.
These investigations were conducted to standardize several chemical and physical environments affecting in vitro propagation of gametophytes of Climacium japonicum. Propagation of this moss species was established on basal medium containing Knop macro salts and Nitsch and Nitsch trace elements. Primary cultures were initiated from apical shoots of gametophytes. Gametophyte production was accessed using chopped gametophytes, apical shoots and basal shoots. Seven ty pes of culture media and four concentrations of total nitrogen and five strengths of sucrose were tested for in vitro gametophyte production. Light and temperature factors were also evaluated. Apical shoots were the greatest among three types explants used for gametophyte propagation. Medium containing Knop macro salts and Nitsch and Nitsch trace elements was more effective than other types of media. Higher sucrose concentrations showed a positive effect on the elongation and multiplication of gametophytes. Both nitrogen deficiency and excessiveness inhibited gametophyte growth. Light intensity variation showed highly significant changes in numbers, length and fresh weight of gametophytes. Optimum light intensity for gametophyte growth seemed to be around 3000-4000 lx. Both lower and higher temperature had a negative effect on gametophyte propagation and production. This study will provide large scale and high quality propagules, and effective moss propagation system.
This paper presents experimental and analytical studies on long-term behavior of square CFT columns with diaphragm. In order to investigate the effect of the diaphragm on the long~term behavior, experiments for six specimens with two diaphragms and three different column length, and three-dimensional finite element analysis for each specimen have been performed. The finite element models considering the interface behavior between the steel tube and the inner concrete were verified from comparison of the test results with the analysis results. From the test and the analysis results, the following conclusions were obtained. The confinement effect created by the diaphragm does not depends on column length and influences only a part of the whole column that is from the end to the depth which is the same to the width of the column. The shortening of the column with diaphragm which covers more than a half of the cross sectional area of the inner concrete is the same as that of the column under a load applied on the steel tube and the entire section of the inner concrete.
In this paper, we propose experimental results, which target the major variables that influence the structural performance of a wall, as well as the resulting seismic and hysteretic behavior. Results also provide the basis for the application of performance based design by identifying the nonlinear hysteretic behavior of the wall with boundary element details recently proposed in previous study by Chun et al(2011). From the experimental results, the crack and fracture patterns of a specimen, which adopt the proposed boundary element details, showed similar tendencies regardless of whether axial force or high performance steel bars is applied. Furthermore, results show that the maximum strength of the specimen can be predicted accurately based on the design equation proposed by the standard. In addition, with a higher axial force, there is a tendency that both the initial load and maximum strength increase as deformation capacity reduces, requiring consideration of the reduced deformation capacity due to a high axial force. For walls under such high axial forces, using high performance steel bars is a very effective manner of enhancing deformation capacity. Therefore, reinforcing the plastic hinge region with boundary elements using high performance steel bars is preferable.

This paper discusses a structure design and thermal analysis of cryogenic conduction cooling system for a high current HTS DC reactor. Dimensions of the conduction cooling system parts including HTS magnets, bobbin structures, current leads, support bars, and thermal exchangers were calculated and drawn using a 3D CAD program. A finite element method model was built for determining the optimal design parameters and analyzing the thermo-mechanical characteristics. The operating current and inductance of the reactor magnet were 1,500 A, 400 mH, respectively. The thermal load of the HTS DC reactor was analyzed for determining the cooling capacity of the cryo-cooler. Hence, we carried out the operating test of conduction cooling system of the 1st stage area with high current flow. The cooper bars was cooled down to 40 K and HTS leads operated stably. As a experiment result, the total heat load of the 1st stage area is 190 W. The study results can be effectively utilized for the design and fabrication of a commercial HTS DC reactor.
It is expected that recent development of the mechanical model will replace previous empirical methods of detailing. In this study, a mechanical model is proposed to analyze the behavior of the anchorage zone of prestressed concrete members. Main characteristics of the proposed model lies on its rational consideration of material properties, and concrete strength in biaxial stress state and that of local zone reinforced by spirals. Shear friction strength of concrete surrounding spirals are also considered. The results of' the proposed method as well as the known Strut-and-Tie method and nonlinear finite element analysis are compared with some typical experimental results. We get good agreement to the failure mode as well as the failure load from test results. And it can be shown that three dimentional failure mechanism, which cannot be expected by the method based on 2D analysis, can be explained by proposed model.

Because of the difference between the actual and computed eccentricity of buildings, symmetrical buildings will be affected by torsion. In provisions, accidental eccentricity is intended to cover the effect of several factors, such as unfavorable distributions of dead- and live-load masses and the rotational component of ground motion about a vertical axis. The torsional amplification factor is introduced to reduce the vulnerability of torsionally imbalanced buildings. The effect of the torsional amplification factor is observed for a symmetric rectangular building with various aspect ratios, where the seismic-force-resisting elements are positioned at a variable distance from the geometrical center in each direction. For verifying the torsional amplification factor in provisions, nonlinear reinforced concrete models with various eccentricities and aspect ratios are used in rock. The difference between the maximum displacements of the flexible edge obtained between using nonlinear static and time-history analysis is very small but the difference between the maximum torsional angles is large.
In the present study, the deformation capacity of slender shear walls with thin web subject to inelastic deformation after flexural yielding was studied. Web-crushing and rebar-fracture were considered as the governing failure mechanisms of walls. To address the effect of the longitudinal elongation on web-crushing and rebar-fracture, the longitudinal elongation was predicted by using truss model analysis. The failure criteria by web-crushing and rebar-fracture were defined as a function of the longitudinal elongation. The proposed method was applied to 17 shear wall specimens with boundary columns, and the prediction results were compared with the test results. The results showed that proposed method predicted the maximum deformations and failure modes of the wall specimens with reasonable precision.
Ground-coupled heat pump system has attracted attention as a promising renewable energy technology due to its improving energy efficiency and eco-friendly mechanism for space cooling and heating. Pipes buried in the ground play a role of direct thermal interaction between circulating fluid inside the pipe and surrounding soils in the geothermal exchange system. However, both complexities of turbulent flow coupling thermal-hydraulic phenomena and very long aspect ratio of the pipe make it difficult to model the heat exchange system directly. Energy balance for fluid flow inside the pipe was derived to model thermal-hydraulic phenomena, and one-dimensional pipe element was proposed through Galerkin formation and time integration of the equation. Developed element is combined to pre-developed FEM code for THM phenomena in porous media. Numerical results of Thermal Response Test showed that line-source model overestimates equivalent thermal conductivity of surrounding soils due to thermal interaction between adjacent pipes and finite length of the pipe. Thus, inverse analysis for the TRT simulation was conducted to present optimal transformation matrix with utmost convergence.

The corrosion of reinforcements embedded in concrete causes severe deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. As a countermeasure, epoxy coated reinforcements are used to prevent corrosion of reinforcements. When epoxy coated bars are used, the resistance of corrosion is excellent, but epoxy coating on the bars have a disadvantage of reduction in bond capacity comparing to that of normal bars. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the bond performance of epoxy coated reinforcements through experimental and analytical methods. Bond behaviors of epoxy coated bars for various diameters of 13 and 19mm and thicknesses of cover concrete of 3 types(ratio of cover to bar diameter) are examined. As the diameters of the epoxy coated bars increase, the difference of bond strength between epoxy coated and uncoated bars also increases and damage patterns showed pull out failure. In addition, finite element analysis was performed based on the bond-slip relationship obtained by direct pullout test and compared with the flexural test results. It is considered that flexural member test is more useful than pullout test for simulating the behavior of actual structure.
