  • Recently, requirement of a long subsea tunnel has increased due to political, economical and social demands such as saving of distribution costs, improvement of traffic convenience, and regional development. Road and railroad tunnel need a shaft for construction and ventilation because of increase of tunnel length. Shaft diameter, lining sectional thickness and rebar quantity have to be determined for design of concrete lining in the shaft. A lot of structural analyses are needed for optimal design of concrete lining considering shaft diameter, load conditions and ground conditions. Design charts are proposed by structural analyses for various conditions in this study. A sectional thickness and rebar quantity can be easily determined using the proposed design charts.

  • This paper presents the design chart to evaluate the two-demensional stability of geoteztilereinforcement embankments on soft foundations. The potential failure surface in this study is assumed as the logarithmic spiral curves refracted at the boundary of layers. To facilitate the iterative calculations, a program that determines the geoteztile tensile force for geotextilereinforcement embankments was developed. This program can be used for situations with a variety of soil layers and soil types. And it can be also used for a static or seismic condition. A series of calculations has been made for a schematised situation. The results of these computation are shown in design charts. Considering static or seismic load strate, these charts in the preliminary stage of the design provide a reasonable estimate of geoteztile tensile force for geotextile-reinforcement embankments on softs foundations. In the final swage a more detailed calculation can be made by developed programs.

  • This paper presents the deterministic model to evaluate the two dimensional stability of geotextile-reinforced embankments on soft foundations. The potential failure surfaces in this study are assumed as the logarithmic spiral curves refracted at the boundary of layers. To facilitate the iterative calculations, we developed a program that determines the geotextile tensile force for an geoteztile-reinforced embankments. This program can be used for situations with a varying number of soil layers and soil types. A series of calculations have been made for a schematised situation. The results of these series are collected in stability charts, which are compared with those by circular potential failure surfaces. Using these charts in an early stage of the design provides a reasonable estimate of the stability of geotextile-reinforced embankments. In a later stage a more detailed calculation can be made by the developed programs.

  • The Seokchook has been designed and constructed on the basis of the empirical standard cross sections depending mainly on its height. And there have been felts experimental studies to deft.Glop the analytical methods to analyze the stability of the Seokchook. Hendron presented from his experimental results a method for the design of the Rockery which is very similar to the Seokchook. This study evaluates the stability of the various standard sections of the Seokchook using Hendron's method. It is concluded that most sections are stable when the internal friction angle exceeds 30 degrees. However, when the internal friction angle is smaller than 30 degrees, there can be some limitations in making use of the standard cross sections.

  • The purpose of culvert design is to determine optimum size for a safe drainage of flood discharge. The present method of culvert design in Korea is generally carried out by using "Road Drainage Design" of Korea Expressway Corporation (1991), which is based on the manual of Federal Highway Association (FHWA) of USA. However, this method may result in subjective error because of using graphs and the usage of nomograph can be a major obstacle for computer modelling. Some errors found in the previous works of culvert design are corrected, and a new logic has been developed for a simple determination of culvert size in this study. FHWA (1985) presents a nomograph to determine the critical water depth and the velocity head for a circular pipe, but in this study simple explicit equations have been developed to determine both respectively.

  • In this study, hydraulic model tests were performed to investigate the stability of armor units at harbor side slope for rubble mound structures. The Korean design standard for harbor and fishery port suggested the design figures that showed the ratio of the armor weight for each location of rubble mound structures and it could be known that the same weight ratio was needed to the sea side and harbor side (within 0.5H from the minimum design water level) slope of rubble mound structures. The super structures were commonly applied to the design process of rubble mound structures in Korea and the investigation of the effects of super structures would be needed. The stability number (Nod = 0.5) was applied (van der Meer, 1999) and it showed that the armor (tetrapod) weight ratio for harbor side slope of rubble mound structures needed 0.8 times of that for sea side slope.

  • In this study, hydraulic model tests were performed to investigate the stability of armor units at harbor side slope for rubble mound structures. The armor units on the rear slope were rocks. The Korean design standard for harbor and fishery port suggested the design figures that showed the ratio of the armor weight for each location of rubble mound structures and it could be known that the same weight ratio was needed to the sea side and rear side slope of rubble mound structures. The crest elements were commonly applied to the design process of rubble mound structures in Korea and the investigation of the effects of super structures would be needed. The damage rate (S =2) was applied and the stable wave height was measured for each test condition. The results were suggested as the armor weight ratio of the rear side slope(armor rock) to the sea side slope (tetrapod) in relation to the relative crest height.

  • In the previous experimental study, it is verified that the ultimate strain of concrete (${\varepsilon}$$_{cu}$=0.003) and coefficient of equivalent stress block (${\beta}$$_1$) can be used for the analysis of RC beams under biaxial and uniaxial bending moment. However, the characteristics of stress distribution of non rectangular compressed area in the RC columns are different to those of rectangular compressed area. The properties of compressive stress distribution of concrete have minor effect on the pure bending moment such as beams, but for the columns subjected to combined axial load and biaxial bending moment, the properties of compressive stress distribution are influencing factors. Nevertheless, in ACI 318-99 code, the design tables for columns subjected to axial loads with bidirectional eccentricities are based on the parameters recommended for rectangular stress block(RSB) of rectangular compressed areas. In this study the characteristics of stress distribution through both angle and depth of neutral axis are observed and formulated rationally. And the modified parameters of rectangular stress block(MRSB) for non rectangular compressed area is proposed. And the computer program using MRSB for the biaxial bending analysis of RC columns is developed and the results of MRSB are compared to RSB and experimental results respectively.
