The multi-dimensional two-phase flow models were developed for analyze the multi-dimensional behaviors or nuclear systems. To verify the simple turbulence model, The single phase mixing problem in a rectangular slab was calculated and compared with the commercial CFD code results. That result shows a good agreement with the CFD result. And the RPI Air-water experiments were simulated to assess the two-phase turbulence model in the multi-dimensional component. The first calculated distribution or void-fraction is highly dispersed and diffusive. It was revealed that the main reason is undesirable stratification force in a horizontal stratified flow regimes. Therefore the horizontally stratified flow regime is deleted because the stratified flow regime is not expected in multi-dimensional flow. With the modification of the flow regime, the predicted flow patterns and void fraction profiles are in good agreement with the measured data.

A new treatment of cell-interface flux in AUSM-type methods is introduced to reduce the numerical dissipation. Through analysis of TVD limiters, a criterion for the more accurate prediction of cell-interface state is found out and M-AUSMPW+ is developed by determining the transferred property newly and appropriately within the criterion. The superiority of M-AUSMPW+ is clearly revealed in multi-dimensional flow problems. It can eliminate numerical dissipation effectively in a non-flow aligned grid system. As a result, M-AUSMPW+ is shown to be much more accurate and effective than other previous schemes in multi-dimensional problems. Through a stationary contact discontinuity, a vortex flow, a shock wave/boundary layer interactions and viscous shock tube problems, it is verified that accuracy of M-AUSMPW+ is improved.
In order to reduce the excessive numerical dissipation which is induced when a grid system is not aligned with a discontinuity, a new spatial treatment of cell-interface fluxes is introduced. The M-AUSMPW+ in this paper has the formula that has an additional procedure of re-defining transferred properties at a cell-interface, based on AUSMPW+. The newly defined transferred property could eliminate numerical dissipation effectively in non-flow aligned grid system of multi-dimensional flows.
A component-scale two-phase analysis code has been developed for a realistic simulation of two-phase flow transients in a light water nuclear reactor component. In the code, a two-fluid three-field model is adopted and the governing equations are solved on an unstructured mesh. For the numerical solution scheme, the semi-implicit method used in the RELAP5 code was selected, which has been proved to be very stable and accurate for most of practical applications. However, some modifications were needed for its application to an unstructured non-staggered grid. This paper presents the modified semi-implicit numerical method for unstructured grid and the preliminary results of the calculations.
The present paper explains some advancement made by the authors for the compressible flow computation of the Euler equations based on the unstructured grid and vertex- centered finite volume method. Accurate solutions to the unsteady axisymmetric shock wave propagation problems and three-dimensional airplane flows have been obtained by a high-order upwind TVD and FCT schemes. Unstructured grid adaption is made for the unsteady shock wave problems by the dynamic h-refinement/unrefinement procedure and for the three-dimensional steady flows by the Delaunay point-insertion method to generate three-dimensional tetrahedral mesh enrichment. Some physics of the shock wave diffraction phenomena and three-dimensional airplane flow are discussed.
The neutron kinetic analysis methods for the molten-salt reactors are quite different from those for conventional solid-fuel reactors, which do not take into account the flowing-fuel-induced neutronics effects. Therefore, for dynamics and safety analyses of the molten-salt reactor systems, the conventional kinetics codes would not be appropriate to accurately predict its transient behaviors. A point-kinetics with flowing- fuel model has been used to assess the fluid-fuel reactor system safety, but recognized as not to be sufficient to simulate spatial distributions of delayed-neutron precursors and neutron populations during transients for given detail reactor models. In order to meet this requirement, AMBIKIND, a 2-group, 2-dimensional neutron kinetics code suitable for the molten-salt reactor systems was developed. This paper explains the code's theoretical and numerical descriptions and, as a part of its verification, includes some simulation results of MSRE stability experiments. Even though the present reactor model does not include the recirculation effect of the fuel-salt through the reactor system, the AMBIKIN2D code should be able to predict the power and phase shift at various power levels and reactivity insertions with better accuracy.
An integrated model is presented to describe underground flow and mass transport, using a multicomponent multiphase approach. The comprehensive governing equation is derived considering mass and force balances of chemical species over four phases(water, oil, air, and soil) in a schematic elementary volume. Compact and systemati notations of relevant variables and equations are introduced to facilitate the inclusion of complex migration and transformation processes, and variable spatial dimensions. The resulting nonlinear system is solved by a multidimensional finite element code. The developed code with dynamic array allocation, is sufficiently flexible to work across a wide spectrum of computers, including an IBM ES 9000/900 vector facility, SP2 cluster machine, Unix workstations and PCs, for one-, two and three-dimensional problems. To reduce the computation time and storage requirements, the system equations are decoupled and solved using a banded global matrix solver, with the vector and parallel processing on the IBM 9000. To avoide the numerical oscillations of the nonlinear problems in the case of convective dominant transport, the techniques of upstream weighting, mass lumping, and elementary-wise parameter evaluation are applied. The instability and convergence criteria of the nonlinear problems are studied for the one-dimensional analogue of FEM and FDM. Modeling capacity is presented in the simulation of three dimensional composite multiphase TCE migration. Comprehesive simulation feature of the code is presented in a companion paper of this issue for the specific groundwater or flow and contamination problems.
A 1/15-scale CREARE experiment, which simulates the thermal-hydraulic behavior in the reactor pressure vessel of a PWR during a hypothetical Loss Of Coolant Accident, has been analyzed using CATHARE code for the associated model assessment to represent the phenomenon. The key parameters examined in the CREARE experiment were known as ECC water injection rate. ECC water subcooling, system pressure, and steam flow rate coming out from the core bottom. The present CATHARE simulation, however, has been mainly focused on qualitative analysis of a countercurrent flow in the downcomer. The discrepancy of the simulation results with the experimental data is considered arising primarily from an inadequate numerical representation as well as an interfacial friction model. Accordingly it is suggested from the sensitivity studies that either multidimensional approach or further examination of momentum equations at a junction near a volume element in CATHARE be necessary in order to represent the phenomenon more realistically.
A two-phase (gas and liquid) flow analysis solver, named CUPID, has been developed for a realistic simulation of transient two-phase flows in light water nuclear reactor components. In the CUPID solver, a two-fluid three-field model is adopted and the governing equations are solved on unstructured grids for flow analyses in complicated geometries. For the numerical solution scheme, the semi-implicit method of the RELAP5 code, which has been proved to be very stable and accurate for most practical applications of nuclear thermal hydraulics, was used with some modifications for an application to unstructured non-staggered grids. This paper is concerned with the effects of interpolation schemes on the simulation of two-phase flows. In order to stabilize a numerical solution and assure a high numerical accuracy, the second-order upwind scheme is implemented into the CUPID code in the present paper. Some numerical tests have been performed with the implemented scheme and the comparison results between the second-order and first-order upwind schemes are introduced in the present paper. The comparison results among the two interpolation schemes and either the exact solutions or the mesh convergence studies showed the reduced numerical diffusion with the second order scheme.
