  • In this study, a method determining the local bond-slip model from pure shear test results of CFRP sheet-concrete adhesive joints is proposed and local bond-slip models are presented. Adhesive joints with a specific bond-slip model, which is assumed as multi-linear curve in order to represent arbitary function, are solved numerically. The difference between the solution and test results are minimized for finding the bond-slip model. The model with bilinear curve is also optimized to verify the improvement of multi-linear model. The selected test results are ultimate load-adhesive length curves from a series of adhesive joints and load-displacement curves for each joint. The optimization problem is formulated by physical programming, and the optimized bond-slip model is found using genetic algorithm.

  • The object of this study is to design radar absorbing structures(RAS) with load-bearing ability in X-band. Glass/Epoxy plain-weave composites of excellent specific stiffness and strength, containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWNT) added to induce dielectric loss were fabricated. The observation of microstructure and the permittivity of the composites confirmed that the materials are suitable to be used for radar absorbing material. Genetic algorithm and theory for reflection/transmission of electromagnetic waves in a multi-layered RAS were applied to conduct an optimal design of a RAS composed of the developed composites. We observed that the thickness per ply changes with the number of ply and MWNT contents. The fabrication process was proposed considering the problem and applied to fabricate a designed RAS and the theoretical and measured reflection loss of the RAS were also found in good agreement.

  • Since newly emerged disease, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), spread from Asia to North America and Europe rapidly in 2003, many researchers have tried to determine where the virus came from. In the phylogenetic point of view, SARS virus has been known to be one of the genus Coronavirus, but, the overall conservation of SARS virus sequence was not highly similar to that of known coronaviruses. The natural reservoirs of SARS-CoV are not clearly determined, yet. In the present study, the genomic sequences of SARS-CoV were analyzed by bioinformatics techniques such as multiple sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis methods as well multivariate statistical analysis. All the calculating processes, including calculations of the relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU) and other genomic parameters using 30,305 coding sequences from the two genera, Coronavirus, and Lentivirus, and one family, Orthomyxoviridae, were performed on SMP cluster in KISTI, Supercomputing Center. As a result, SARS_CoV showed very similar RSCU patterns with feline coronavirus on the both axes of the correspondence analysis, and this result showed more agreeable results with serological results for SARS_CoV than that of phylogenetic result itself. In addition, SARS_CoV, human immunodeficiency virus, and influenza A virus commonly showed the very low RSCU differences among each synonymous codon group, and this low RSCU bias might provide some advantages for them to be transmitted from other species into human beings more successfully. Large-scale genomic analysis using bioinformatics techniques may be useful in genetic epidemiology field effectively.

  • In this paper, an analysis for a new substrate shielding symmetric coupled MIS structure consisting of grounded crossbar at the interface between Si and SiO2 layer using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) method is presented. In order to reduce the substrate effects on the transmission line characteristics, a shielding structure consisting of grounded crossbar lines over time-domain signal has been examined. Parameters of symmetric coupled MIS transmission line with various gaps between crossbars for even- and odd-mode are investigated as the functions of frequency, and the extracted distributed frequency-dependent transmission line parameters and corresponding equivalent circuit parameters as well as quality factor for the new MIS crossbar embedded structure are also presented. It is shown that the quality factor of the symmetric coupled transmission line can be improved without significant change in the characteristic impedance and effective dielectric constant.

  • Records on 546 Korea native pigs for average daily gain (ADG), age at 70 kg (D70 kg) and backfat thickness (BF) made between 2001 and 2006 in herds on National Institutes of Animal Science in Korea were used to estimate genetic parameters. The data was analyzed by the DF-REML (Derivative-Free Restricted Maximum Likelihood) program of Boldman using a single-trait animal model. Heritabilities were 0.26, 0.09, and 0.29 for ADG, D70 kg and BF, respectively. The phenotypic correlations of ADG with D70 kg and BF were -0.71 and 0.30. The phenotypic correlation of D70 kg with BF was -0.15. The genetic correlations of ADG with D70 kg and BF were -0.11, 0.41, respectively. The genetic correlation of D70 kg with BF was -0.16. The data of weights and measurements on body length, body height and chest width after age at 11 months (days to 330) were shown scarcely less differences compare to data of age at 11 months.

  • In this paper, parallel computing method on the three-dimensional electromagnetic field is proposed. The present electromagnetic scattering analysis is conducted based on the time-harmonic vector wave equation and the finite element method. The edge-based element and 2nd -order absorbing boundary condition are used. Parallelization of the elemental numerical integration and the matrix assemblage is accomplished by allocating the partitioned finite element subdomain for each processor. The graph partitioning library, METIS, is employed for the subdomain generation. The large sparse matrix computation is conducted by MUMPS, which is the parallel computing library based on the multi-frontal method. The accuracy of the present program is validated by the comparison against the Mie-series analytical solution and the results by ANSYS HFSS. In addition, the scalability is verified by measuring the speed-up in terms of the number of processors used. The present electromagnetic scattering analysis is performed for a perfect electric conductor sphere, isotropic/anisotropic dielectric sphere, and the missile configuration. The algorithm of the present program will be applied to the finite element and tearing method, aiming for the further extended parallel computing performance.

  • In this paper, the linearity of Doherty power amplifier has been improved by applying a new Photonic Bandgap(PBG) structure on the output of amplifier. The reposed spiral PBG structure is a two-dimensional(2-D) periodic lattice patterned on a dielectric slab that does not require nonplanar fabrication process. This structure has more broad stopband and high suppression performance than the conventional three cell PBG. Also, It has a sharp skirt property. We obtained the 3rd-order intermodulation distortion(IMD3) of -33dBc for CDMA applications with that of maintaining the constant power added efficiency(PAE), the IMD3 performance is improved as much as -8 dB compared with a Doherty power amplifier without PBG structure. Moreover, the physical length of PBG is shortened, therefore the whole amplifier circuit size is considerably reduced.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the effects by multi-stacking superstrates over the circular-polarized patch antenna. The previous works considered a single-layered superstrate or a superstrate with multiple layers, and did not almost consider the axial ratio at the performance analysis. First, the effect of center frequency shift is analyzed by the variation of air-gap height between patch antenna and superstrate. The center frequency is down-shifted at the smaller air-gap height and has almost the same frequency as patch antenna at the air-gap height of $005{\lambda}_0$. Second, the antenna performance is analyzed by multi-stacking superstrates with the air-gap height of $005{\lambda}_0$. As the number of multi-stacked superstrates increase, antenna gain has a linear increase and axial ratio is exponentially deteriorated. In addition, it has also been observed that the antenna performance has the same trend with the number of multi-stacked superstrates as the thickness of superstrate increases. Finally, we confirmed that it is possible to design the CP patch antenna with the scalable gain and less than 3dB axial ratio by stacking the superstrate.

  • Plant have developed sophisticated defence mechanisms against microbial pathogens. The recent accumulated information allow us to understand the nature of plant immune responses followed by recognition of microbial factors/determinants through cutting-edge genomics and multi-omics techniques. However, the practical approaches to sustain plant health using enhancement of plant immunity is yet to be fully appreciated. Here, we overviewed the general concept and representative examples on the plant immunity. The fungal, bacterial, and viral determinants that was previously reported as the triggers of plant immune responses are introduced and described as the potential protocol of biological control. Specifically, the role of chitin, glucan, lipopolysaccharides/extracellular polysaccharides, microbe/pathogen-associated molecular pattern, antibiotics, mimic-phytohormones, N-acyl homoserine lactone, harpin, vitamins, and volatile organic compounds are considered. We hope that this review stimulates scientific community and farmers to broaden their knowledge on the microbial determinant-based biological control and to apply the technology on the integrated pest management program.

  • This paper presents a novel photonic bandgap (PBG) structure for size reduction and linearity improvement in power amplifier. The proposed structure is a two-dimensional (2-D) periodic lattice patterned on a dielectric slab that does not require nonplanar fabrication process. Throughout the experi-mental results, this structure has more broad stopband and high suppression performance than conventional three cell PBG and distorted uniplanar compact-PBG (DUC-PBG). This new PBG structure can be applied with power amplifier for linearity improvement. The 3rd intermodulation distortion (IMD3) of the power amplifier using new PBG structure is -36.16 dBc for (code division multiple access) CDMA applications. Compared with power amplifier without the proposed PBG structure, improved IMD3 is -13.49 dBc.
