  • We demonstrate the preliminary results of ship detection application using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and automatic identification system (AIS) together. Multi-frequency and multi-temporal SAR images such as TerraSAR-X and Cosmo-SkyMed (X-band), and Radarsat-2 (C-band) are acquired over the West Sea in South Korea. In order to compare with SAR data, we also collected an AIS data. The SAR data are pre-processed considering by the characteristics of scattering mechanism as for sea surface. We proposed the "Adaptive Threshold Algorithm" for classification ship efficiently. The analyses using the combination of the SAR and AIS data with time series will be very useful to ship detection or tracing of the ship.

  • As hyperspectral sensors that can be mounted on drones are developed, it is possible to acquire hyperspectral imagery with high spatial and spectral resolution. Although the importance of atmospheric correction has been reduced since imagery of drones were acquired at a low altitude, studies on the conversion process from raw data to spectral reflectance should be done for studies such as estimating the concentration of surface materials using hyperspectral imagery. In this study, a vicarious radiometric calibration and an atmospheric correction algorithm based on atmospheric radiation transfer model were applied to hyperspectral data of drone and the results were compared and analyzed. The vicarious calibration method was applied to an empirical line calibration using the spectral reflectance of a tarp made of uniform material. The atmospheric correction algorithm used ATCOR-4 based Modran-5 that was widely used for the atmospheric correction of aerial hyperspectral imagery. As a result of analyzing the RMSE of the difference between the reference reflectance and the correction, the vicarious calibration using the tarp in a single period of hyperspectral image was the most accurate, but the atmospheric correction was possible according to the application purpose of using hyperspectral imagery. If the correction process of normalized spectral reflectance is carried out through the additional vicarious calibration for imagery from multiple periods in the future, accurate analysis using hyperspectral drone imagery will be possible.

  • In order to obtain consistent change detection result for multi-temporal satellite images, preprocessing must be performed. In particular, the preprocessing related to the spectral values can be performed by the radiometric normalization, and relative radiometric normalization is generally utilized. However, most relative radiometric normalization methods assume a linear relationship between the two images, and nonlinear spectral characteristics such as phenological differences are not considered. Therefore, this study proposes a relative radiometric normalization which assumes nonlinear relationships that can perform compositive normalization of radiometric and phenological characteristics. The proposed method selects the subject and reference images, and then extracts the radiometric control set samples through the no-change method. In addition, spectral indexes as well as pixel values are extracted in order to consider sufficient information, and modeling of nonlinear relationships is performed through multilayer perceptron. Finally, the proposed method is compared with the conventional relative radiometric normalization methods, which shows that the proposed method is visually and quantitatively superior.

  • Multi-spectral drones in agricultural observation require quantitative and reliable data based on physical quantities such as radiance or reflectance in crop yield analysis. In the case of remote sensing data for crop monitoring, images taken in the same area over time-series are required. In particular, biophysical data such as leaf area index or chlorophyll are analyzed through time-series data under the same reference, it can be directly analyzed. So, comparable reflectance data are required. Orthoimagery using drone images, the entire image pixel values are distorted or there is a difference in pixel values at the junction boundary, which limits accurate physical quantity estimation. In this study, reflectance and vegetation index based on drone images were calculated according to the correction method of drone images for time-series crop monitoring. comparing the drone reflectance and ground measured data for spectral characteristics analysis.

  • Mapping urban areas using the earth observation satellites is useful for monitoring urban expansions and measuring urban developments. In this research, the different thresholds for detecting the urban areas separately from the remote-sensing index images (normalized-difference built-up index(NDBI) and urban index(UI) images) generated from the Landsat-8 image acquired in Daegu, South Korea were evaluated through the following steps: (1) the NDBI and UI images were separately generated from the given Landsat-8 image; (2) the different thresholds (-0.4, -0.2, and 0) for detecting the urban areas separately from the NDBI and UI images were evaluated; and (3) the accuracy of each detected urban area was assessed. The experiment results showed that the threshold -0.2 had the best performance for detecting the urban areas from the NDBI image, while the threshold -0.4 had the best performance for detecting the urban areas from the UI image. Some misclassification errors, however, occurred in the areas where the bare soil areas were classified into urban areas or where the high-rise apartments were classified into other areas. In the future research, a robust methodology for detecting urban areas, including the various types of urban features, with less misclassification errors will be proposed using the satellite images. In addition, research on analyzing the pattern of urban expansion will be carried out using the urban areas detected from the multi-temporal satellite images.

  • As the number of multispectral satellites increases, it is expected that it will be possible to acquire and use images for periodically. However, there is a problem of data discrepancy due to different overpass time, period and spatial resolution. In particular, the difference in band bandwidths became different reflectance even for images taken at the same time and affect uncertainty in the analysis of vegetation activity such as vegetation index. The purpose of this study is to estimate the band adjustment factor according to the difference of bandwidth with other multispectral satellites for the application of KOMPSAT-3 satellite in agriculture field. The Spectral band adjustment factor (SBAF) were calculated using the hyperspectral satellite images acquired in the desert area. As a result of applying SBAF to the main crop area, the vegetation index showed a high agreement rate of relative percentage difference within 3% except for the Hapcheon area where the zenith angle was 25. For the estimation of SBAF, this study used only one set of images, which did not consider season and solar zenith angle of SBAF variation. Therefore, long-term analysis is necessary to solve SBAF uncertainty in the future.

  • This paper classifies the topography of the Saemangeum Tidal flats based on Landsat TM satellite images by unsupervised ISODATA method, and analysis of the spatiotemporal changes of the classified shapes. The sedimental topography represents various properties according to the Saemangeum Tidal Embankment progress. We well proceed this study of the sedimental changes and distributions. By specifying the topographic characteristics of inner sea areas respectively, the investigation on the case study area according to the changes of the tidal will be useful in the establishment of land reclamation plan and the land use of the reclaimed area. In addition, the estuary image can be divided into tidal flats and sea surfaces using the band 4, also the detailed topography using the band 5, respectively among Landsat TM 7 bands. This paper contributes to the efficient image processing of the spatiotemporal sedimental changes.

  • This research is to observe the shoreline changes in Jinha beach over the 50 years with aerial photographs and satellite images. The shoreline image feature was retrieved from the corrected images using wet and dry techniques and analyzed by DSAS from the statistical point of view. From 1967 to 1992, the mouth of Hoeya River was severely blocked and the northern shoreline off Jinha beach was eroded. The blockade of river mouth seemed to have been eased along with the completion of the dike, but soil continued to be deposited along the high sea away from the river month. Compared to the past, a layer of sediment has been formed off the northern coastline while the southern coastline has eroded. At least in the region subject to this research, the construction of a training dike is to blame. On top of that, a mere combination of dredges and artificial nourishment is not enough to take under control the changing shorelines properly. Thus, it is necessary to devise a more fundamental solution by taking into account reasons behind sediment from the river area that could change the shorelines besides the costal environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess spatio-temporal variation of Imha Dam water quality according to suspended sediment algorithm using Landsat and SPOT 5 data. In order to learn synchronous suspended sediment concentrations(SSC) in Imha Dam waters, the satellite remote sensing data are analyzed. The key procedure of this research is that we should know the relationships between suspended sediment concentrations and satellite-detected reflectance. However, the SSC algorithm has the limitation that it must be compared calculated SSC with synchronous ground-truth data in the Dam water. Based upon the linear response from satellite-detected reflectance, SSC algorithm validated an efficient algorithm to estimate proportional factor and then derived an empirical equation far SSC estimations.

  • This study analyzes the change in land-cover based on satellite imagery to draw up land-cover map in the future, and estimates the change in land category using statistical data of the land category. To estimate land category, this study applied the double exponentially smoothing method. The result of the land cover classification according to year using satellite imagery showed that the type with the largest increase in area of land cover change in the cities of Cheonan and Asan was artificial structure, followed by water, grass field and bare land. However forest, paddy, marsh and dry field were reduced. Further, the result of the time-series analysis of the land category was found to be similar to the result of the land cover classification using satellite imagery. Especially, the result of the estimation of the land category change using the double exponentially smoothing method showed that paddy, dry field, forest and marsh are anticipated to consistently decrease in area from 2010 to 2100, whereas artificial structure, water, bare land and grass field are anticipated to consistently increase. Such results can be utilized as basic data to estimate the change in land cover according to climate change in order to prepare climate change response strategies.
