  • The classification time required by conventional multi-class SVMs(Support Vector Machines) greatly increases as the number of pattern classes increases. This is due to the fact that the needed set of binary class SVMs gets quite large. In this paper, we propose a method to reduce the number of classes by using nearest neighbor rule (NNR) in the principle component analysis and linear discriminant analysis (PCA+LDA) feature subspace. The proposed method reduces the number of face classes by selecting a few classes closest to the test data projected in the PCA+LDA feature subspace. Results of experiment show that our proposed method has a lower error rate than nearest neighbor classification (NNC) method. Though our error rate is comparable to the conventional multi-class SVMs, the classification process of our method is much faster.

  • In this paper, a study on classification targeting a main production area of garlic and onion was carried out in order to figure out the applicability of multi-temporal high-resolution satellite imagery for field crop classification. After collecting satellite imagery in accordance with the growth cycle of garlic and onion, classifications using each sing date imagery and various combinations of multi-temporal dataset were conducted. In the case of single date imagery, high classification accuracy was obtained in December when the planting was completed and March when garlic and onion started to grow vigorously. Meanwhile, higher classification accuracy was obtained when using multi-temporal dataset rather than single date imagery. However, more images did not guarantee higher classification accuracy. Rather, the imagery at the planting season or right after planting reduced classification accuracy. The highest classification accuracy was obtained when using the combination of March, April and May data corresponding the growth season of garlic and onion. Therefore, it is recommended to secure imagery at main growth season in order to classify garlic and onion field using multi-temporal satellite imagery.

  • Recently, numerous documents including unstructured data and text have been created due to the rapid increase in the usage of social media and the Internet. Each document is usually provided with a specific category for the convenience of the users. In the past, the categorization was performed manually. However, in the case of manual categorization, not only can the accuracy of the categorization be not guaranteed but the categorization also requires a large amount of time and huge costs. Many studies have been conducted towards the automatic creation of categories to solve the limitations of manual categorization. Unfortunately, most of these methods cannot be applied to categorizing complex documents with multiple topics because the methods work by assuming that one document can be categorized into one category only. In order to overcome this limitation, some studies have attempted to categorize each document into multiple categories. However, they are also limited in that their learning process involves training using a multi-categorized document set. These methods therefore cannot be applied to multi-categorization of most documents unless multi-categorized training sets are provided. To overcome the limitation of the requirement of a multi-categorized training set by traditional multi-categorization algorithms, we propose a new methodology that can extend a category of a single-categorized document to multiple categorizes by analyzing relationships among categories, topics, and documents. First, we attempt to find the relationship between documents and topics by using the result of topic analysis for single-categorized documents. Second, we construct a correspondence table between topics and categories by investigating the relationship between them. Finally, we calculate the matching scores for each document to multiple categories. The results imply that a document can be classified into a certain category if and only if the matching score is higher than the predefined threshold. For example, we can classify a certain document into three categories that have larger matching scores than the predefined threshold. The main contribution of our study is that our methodology can improve the applicability of traditional multi-category classifiers by generating multi-categorized documents from single-categorized documents. Additionally, we propose a module for verifying the accuracy of the proposed methodology. For performance evaluation, we performed intensive experiments with news articles. News articles are clearly categorized based on the theme, whereas the use of vulgar language and slang is smaller than other usual text document. We collected news articles from July 2012 to June 2013. The articles exhibit large variations in terms of the number of types of categories. This is because readers have different levels of interest in each category. Additionally, the result is also attributed to the differences in the frequency of the events in each category. In order to minimize the distortion of the result from the number of articles in different categories, we extracted 3,000 articles equally from each of the eight categories. Therefore, the total number of articles used in our experiments was 24,000. The eight categories were "IT Science," "Economy," "Society," "Life and Culture," "World," "Sports," "Entertainment," and "Politics." By using the news articles that we collected, we calculated the document/category correspondence scores by utilizing topic/category and document/topics correspondence scores. The document/category correspondence score can be said to indicate the degree of correspondence of each document to a certain category. As a result, we could present two additional categories for each of the 23,089 documents. Precision, recall, and F-score were revealed to be 0.605, 0.629, and 0.617 respectively when only the top 1 predicted category was evaluated, whereas they were revealed to be 0.838, 0.290, and 0.431 when the top 1 - 3 predicted categories were considered. It was very interesting to find a large variation between the scores of the eight categories on precision, recall, and F-score.

  • The accuracy of rural land cover using airborne multispectral images and LEAR (Light Detection And Ranging) data was analyzed. Multispectral image consists of three bands in green, red and near infrared. Intensity image was derived from the first returns of LIDAR, and vegetation height image was calculated by difference between elevation of the first returns and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) derived from the last returns of LIDAR. Using maximum likelihood classification method, three bands of multispectral images, LIDAR vegetation height image, and intensity image were employed for land cover classification. Overall accuracy of classification using all the five images was improved to 85.6% about 10% higher than that using only the three bands of multispectral images. The classification accuracy of rural land cover map using multispectral images and LIDAR images, was improved with clear difference between heights of different crops and between heights of crop and tree by LIDAR data and use of LIDAR intensity for land cover classification.

  • Purpose : This paper introduces a computationally inexpensive context-dependent classification of multi-echo MRI with Bayes compound decision model. In order to produce accurate region segmentation especially in homogeneous area and along boundaries of the regions, we propose a classification method that uses contextual information of local enighborhood system in the image. Material and Methods : The performance of the context free classifier over a statistically heterogeneous image can be improved if the local stationary regions in the image are disassociated from each other through the mechanism of the interaction parameters defined at he local neighborhood level. In order to improve the classification accuracy, we use the contextual information which resolves ambiguities in the class assignment of a pattern based on the labels of the neighboring patterns in classifying the image. Since the data immediately surrounding a given pixel is intimately associated with this given pixel., then if the true nature of the surrounding pixel is known this can be used to extract the true nature of the given pixel. The proposed context-dependent compound decision model uses the compound Bayes decision rule with the contextual information. As for the contextual information in the model, the directional transition probabilities estimated from the local neighborhood system are used for the interaction parameters. Results : The context-dependent classification paradigm with compound Bayesian model for multi-echo MR images is developed. Compared to context free classification which does not consider contextual information, context-dependent classifier show improved classification results especially in homogeneous and along boundaries of regions since contextual information is used during the classification. Conclusion : We introduce a new paradigm to classify multi-echo MRI using clustering analysis and Bayesian compound decision model to improve the classification results.

  • This paper proposes classification of multi-spectral satellite image based on fusion of fuzzy G-K (Gustafson-Kessel) algorithm and PCM algorithm. The suggested algorithm establishes the initial cluster centers by selecting training data from each category, and then executes the fuzzy G-K algorithm. PCM algorithm perform using classification result of the fuzzy G-K algorithm. The classification categories are allocated to the corresponding category when the results of classification by fuzzy G-K algorithm and PCM algorithm belong to the same category. If the classification result of two algorithms belongs to the different category, the pixels are allocated by Bayesian maximum likelihood algorithm. Bayesian maximum likelihood algorithm uses the data from the interior of the average intracluster distance. The information of the pixels within the average intracluster distance has a positive normal distribution. It improves classification result by giving a positive effect in Bayesian maximum likelihood algorithm. The proposed method is applied to IKONOS and Landsat TM remote sensing satellite image for the test. As a result, the overall accuracy showed a better outcome than individual Fuzzy G-K algorithm and PCM algorithm or the conventional maximum likelihood classification algorithm.

  • In this paper, the ciassification of Korean character type using multi neural network and fuzzy inference based on block partition is studied. For the effective classification of a consonant and a vowel, block partition method which devide the region of a consonant and a vowel for each type in the character is proposed. And the partitioned block can be changed according to the each type adaptively. For the improvement of classification rate, the multi neural network with a whole and a part neural network is consisted, and the character type by using fuzzy inference is decided. To verify the validity of the proposed method, computer simulation is accomplished, and from the classification rate $92.6\%$, the effectivity of the method is confirmed.

  • This study propose a image processing system of unsupervised analysis. This system integrates low-level segmentation and high-level classification. The segmentation and classification are conducted respectively with and without spatial constraints on merging by a hierarchical clustering procedure. The clustering utilizes the local mutually closest neighbors and multi-window operation of a pyramid-like structure. The proposed system has been evaluated using simulated images and applied for the LANDSATETM+ image collected from Youngin-Nungpyung area on the Korean Peninsula.
