  • An optimal ground station (GS) antenna pattern design method for network-based UAV command and control communication systems considering complexity and performance is presented. The GS antenna consists of multiple side sectors and one upward sector. The antenna gain for each vertical/horizontal angle of the GS antenna according to the change of antenna design parameters such as the number of sectors, horizontal and vertical beam-width, and tilt-angle is modeled, and the effect of the parameter changes on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distribution in the virtual three-dimensional space is analyzed. It is observed that the tilt-angle of the side sectors has the greatest effect on the performance, and the longer the distance between GSs, the higher the maximum altitude and the smaller the number of side sectors, the tilt-angle should be lower. In addition, it is observed that the wider vertical beam-width of the side sector is advantageous in maximizing the lowest SNR, but narrow vertical beam-width is advantageous in maximizing the average SNR.

  • Utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are rapidly expanding to various fields ranging from defense, industry, entertainment and personal hobbies. Due to the increased activities of unmanned airplanes, many security problems have emerged, including flight path errors to undesired destinations, secondary threats due to exposed securities caused by the capture of unmanned airplanes in hostile countries. In this paper, we find security vulnerabilities in UAVs such as GPS spoofing, hacking captured video information, malfunction due to signal attenuation through jamming, and exposure of personal information due to image shooting. In order to solve this problem, the stability of the unstructured data is secured by setting the encryption of the video shooting information section using the virtual private network (VPN) to prevent the GPS spoofing attack. In addition, data integrity was ensured by applying personal information encryption and masking techniques to minimize the secondary damage caused by exposure of the UAV and to secure safety. It is expected that it will contribute to the safe use and stimulation of industry in the application field of UAV currently growing.

  • In this paper, we present design, fabrication, and measured results for a frequency upconverter for a wireless communication system of UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). The specifications of such wireless communication system requires the special features of maximum range of communication as well as deployment in UAV and repairing. The frequency upconverter operating at $5.25{\sim}5.45\;GHz$ in C-band was designed and fabricated considering such special features. The AGC function was included because the required output power should be constant for optimal system operation. The fabricated upconverter showed a constant output power of $+2{\pm}0.5\;dBm$ for the $-15{\sim}-10\;dBm$ input. Spuriouses were below -60 dBc and the adjacent leakage power was below -40 dBc. In addition, LO sources in the upconverter was implemented using the frequency synthesizer with step 1 MHz. This is for the application to the situation where multiple UAVs employed and the possible change of the permitted frequency band. The synthesizer showed a phase noise of -100 dBc/Hz at the 100 kHz frequency offset.

  • AVTE(Air Vehicle Test Equipment) is an equipment to inspect and check the status of on-board aircraft LRUs(Line Replacement Units) before and after flight for performing successful UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) missions. This paper suggests utilization of the AVTE as an operation support-equipment by implementing several critical functions for UAV-operation on the AVTE. The AVTE easily sets initialization(default) data and compensates for the installation and position errors of the LRUs which provide critical mission data and situation image with pilots without additional individual operation support-equipment. Major fault list and situation image data could be downloaded after flight using the AVTE in the event of UAV emergency situation or unusual occurrence on duty as well. We anticipate the suggested operational approach of the AVTE could dramatically reduce the cost and man power for design and manufacture of additional operation support equipment and effectively diminish workload of the operator.

  • The utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is expanding in various industries such as logistics, manufacturing, and transportation. However, to operate a large number of UAVs, it is imperative to first plan a secure and efficient self-configuring communication network for UAVs. In this study, we proposed a method for planning a secure and efficient UAV self-configuring communication network using Voronoi diagrams in the following three steps: 1) generating Voronoi diagrams using obstacles, 2) selecting obstacles to consider for path generation, and 3) planning the optimal path and outputting the path. The real-time feasibility of using the proposed method for planning optimal communication paths for a realistic number of UAVs was experimentally validated.

  • An unmanned ground vehicle(UGV) today plays a significant role in both civilian and military areas. Predominantly these systems are used to replace humans in hazardous situations. To take unmanned ground vehicles systems to the next level and increase their capabilities and the range of missions they are able to perform in the combat field, new technologies are needed in the area of command and control. For this reason, we present war field simulator based on information fusion technology to efficiently control UGV. In this paper, we present the war field simulator which is made of critical components, that is, simulation controller, virtual image viewer, and remote control device to efficiently control UGV in the future combat fields. In our information fusion technology, improved methods of target detection, recognition, and location are proposed. In addition, time reduction method of target detection is also proposed. In the consequence of the operation test, we expect that our war field simulator based on information fusion technology plays an important role in the future military operation significantly.

  • People may operate unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs or drones) thousands of miles from the drone's location. Drones were first used (like balloons) for surveillance. By 2001, the United States began arming drones with missiles and using them to strike targets during combat in Afghanistan. By mid-2010, over forty states and other entities possessed drones, many with the capability of launching missiles and dropping bombs. Each new development in military weapons technology invites assessment of the relevant international law. This Insight surveys the international law applicable to the recent innovation of weaponizing drones. In determining what international law rules govern drone use, the most salient feature is not the fact that drones are unmanned. The fact drones carry no human operator may be the most important new technological breakthrough, but the key feature for international law purposes is the type of weaponry drones carry. Whether law enforcement rules govern drone use depends on the situation and not necessarily who is operating the drone. Battlefield weapons may also be lawfully used before an armed conflict in the following situations: when initiating self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter; when authorized by the UN Security Council; when a government seeks to suppress internal armed conflict; and, perhaps, when a state is invited to assist a government in suppressing internal armed conflict. The rules governing resort to force in self-defense are found in Article 51 of the UN Charter and a number of decisions by international courts and tribunals. Commentators continue to debate whether drone technology represents the next revolution in military affairs. Regardless of the answer to that question, drones have not created a revolution in legal affairs. The current rules governing battlefield launch vehicles are adequate for regulating resort to drones. More research must be undertaken, however, to understand the psychological effects of deploying unmanned vehicles and the effects on drone operators of sustained, close visual contact with the aftermath of drone attacks.
