Linear regression method, proposed by Haseman and Elston(1972), for detecting linkage to a quantitative trait of sib pairs is a linkage testing method for a single locus and a single trait. However, multivariate methods for detecting linkage are needed, when information from each of several traits that are affected by the same major gene are available on each individual. Amos et al. (1990) extended the regression method of Haseman and Elston(1972) to incorporate observations of two or more traits by estimating the principal component linear function that results in the strongest correlation between the squared pair differences in the trait measurements and identity by descent at a marker locus. But, it is impossible to control the probability of type I errors with this method at present, since the exact distribution of the statistic that they use is yet unknown. In this paper, we propose a multivariate nonparametric trend test for detecting linkage to multiple traits. We compared with a simulation study the efficiencies of multivariate nonparametric trend test with those of the method developed by Amos et al. (1990) for quantitative traits data. For multivariate nonparametric trend test, the results of the simulation study reveal that the Type I error rates are close to the predetermined significance levels, and have in general high powers.
An innovative method for separating overlapping latent fingerprints, using laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS) combined with multivariate analysis, is reported in the current study. LIPS provides the capabilities of real-time analysis and high-speed scanning, as well as data regarding the chemical components of overlapping fingerprints. These spectra provide valuable chemical information for the forensic classification and reconstruction of overlapping latent fingerprints, by applying appropriate multivariate analysis. This study utilizes principal-component analysis (PCA) and partial-least-squares (PLS) techniques for the basis classification of four types of fingerprints from the LIPS spectra. The proposed method is successfully demonstrated through a classification example of four distinct latent fingerprints, using discrimination such as soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) and partial-least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). This demonstration develops an accuracy of more than 85% and is proven to be sufficiently robust. In addition, by laser-scanning analysis at a spatial interval of 125 ㎛, the overlapping fingerprints were separated as two-dimensional forms.
Recently, developments of process monitoring system in order to detect and diagnose process abnormalities has got the spotlight in process systems engineering. Normal data obtained from processes provide available information of process characteristics to be used for modeling, monitoring, and control. Since modern chemical and environmental processes have high dimensionality, strong correlation, severe dynamics and nonlinearity, it is not easy to analyze a process through model-based approach. To overcome limitations of model-based approach, lots of system engineers and academic researchers have focused on statistical approach combined with multivariable analysis such as principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares (PLS), and so on. Several multivariate analysis methods have been modified to apply it to a chemical process with specific characteristics such as dynamics, nonlinearity, and so on.This paper discusses about missing value estimation and sensor fault identification based on process variable reconstruction using dynamic PCA and canonical variate analysis.
Since late 1970, methods of influence or sensitivity analysis for detecting influential observations have been studied not only in regression and related methods but also in various multivariate methods. If results of multivariate analyses sometimes depend heavily on a small number of observations, we should be very careful to draw a conclusion. Similar phenomena may also occur in the case of incomplete data. In this research we try to study such influential observations in multivariate statistical analysis of incomplete data. Case of principal component analysis is studied with a numerical example.
Multivariate skew-normal distribution(distribution that includes multivariate normal distribution) has been recently applied to many application areas. We consider saddlepoint approximation for a statistic of linear combination based on a multivariate skew-normal distribution. This approach can be regarded as an extension of Na and Yu (2013) that dealt saddlepoint approximation for the distribution of a skew-normal sample mean for a linear statistic and multivariate version. Simulations results and examples with real data verify the accuracy and applicability of suggested approximations.
Grouped multivariate data can be tested for differences between two or more groups using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). However, this method cannot be used if several assumptions of MANOVA are violated. In this case, multidimensional scaling (MDS) and analysis of distance (AOD) can be applied to grouped dissimilarities based on the various distances. A permutation test is a non-parametric method that can also be used to test differences between groups. MDS is used to calculate the coordinates of observations from dissimilarities and AOD is useful for finding group structure using the coordinates. In particular, AOD is mathematically associated with MANOVA if using the Euclidean distance when computing dissimilarities. In this paper, we study the between and within group structure by applying MDS and AOD to the grouped dissimilarities. In addition, we propose a new test statistic using the group structure for the permutation test. Finally, we investigate the relationship between AOD and MANOVA from dissimilarities based on the Euclidean distance.
In this work we measured and analyzed the subjective opinions of consumers towards the sound quality of car audios through a questionnaire. First of all, we chose eight controllable factors which had been known to affect the quality of reproduced sound. An orthogonal design of experiments was used to imitate the objective sound environments by reproducing the combinations of 8 sound characteristics, each with two levels. Then we defined 8 corresponding response variables to measure the subjective opinions towards the quality of reproduced sound. Finally, we applied the Multivariate Analysis of Valiance to explore the significant sound characteristics which affected the subjective opinions towards the quality of reproduced sound.
Abstract The purpose of the synthetic of monthly river flows based on the short-term observed data by means of multivariate stochastic models is to provide abundunt input data to the water resources systems of which the system performance and operation policy are to be determined beforehand. In this study, multivariate Thomas-Fiering and Matalas models for synthetic generation based on stream flows in neihboring basin were employed to check if it can be applide in the modeling of monthly flows. Statistical parameters estimated by Method of Moment and Fourier Series Analysis respectively were reproduced for statistical features. For comparisons the statistical parameters of the generated monthly flow by each model were compared with those of the observed monthly flows. Results of this study suggest that the application of Matalas model for synthetic generation of monthly river flows can be adapted.
