  • This study investigated perceptions of early childhood teachers about children of Female International Marriage Migrants(FIMM) and their classroom conditions. Data was collected from 117 teachers of kindergartens and day care centers in Jeonnam Province using a 28-item inventory composed of classroom conditions and perceptions of teachers about the children of FIMM. Results showed that over 70% of teachers' students were children of FIMM. Children's traits included poor language skills, confusion of identity, and socio-emotional problems due to passive interaction with peers. Programs specifically for FIMM and their children are rare. Teachers considered difficulties teaching children of FIMM are due to lack of economic support, hardship of managing multicultural curriculum, restrictions in application of that curriculum, and institutional inertia.

  • This study investigated how perceived social support, self-esteem and parenting attitudes of mothers relates to children's social competence and explored the mediating role of parenting attitudes in multicultural families. Participants were 67 immigrant women and their children aged 4-6. Instruments were the Social Support Scale (Park, 1985), Maternal Behavior Instrument (Lee, 1986), Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) and Social Competence Scale (Doh & Falbo, 1994). Data were analyzed by Pearson's Correlation and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Results indicated that social support perceived by mothers related positively to their self-esteem and positive parenting, and to children's social competence. Mothers' self-esteem related positively to their positive parenting and to children's social competence. Maternal parenting behavior mediated the effects of social support and self-esteem on children's social competence.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse literacy of children from multicultural backgrounds, and identify cognitive-linguistic predictors that can affect their literacy. First, the higher-grade students showed better cognitive-linguistic variables in reading and writing performance. Second, it has been noted that the predictor variable of reading in children from multicultural backgrounds was homeostasis in visual form, which is a sub-variable of visual perception. This implies that detained characteristics play an important role in reading prerequisite. Therefore it can be said that it is more important to recognise features and clues about the details than reading familiar words. Furthermore, learning consonants and vowels should come first rather than studying letters at the first stages of learning Korean.

  • This study examined the relationship between discrimination experienced by children of multicultural families and their psychological distress. As new minorities growing up with bicultural identities in Korean society, children from multicultural families are often exposed to racial discrimination and such experience often acts as a stressor in their everyday life. In order to examine the effect of discrimination on their psychological distress as well as the role of social support, a survey was conducted in 25 elementary schools in Daejeon city and Chungnam and Chungbuk province. Results indicated that children's experiences of discrimination significantly affected their psychological distress level that the more they were exposed to discrimination, the higher levels of depression and anxiety they experienced. Among social support domains, only peer support was found to be significantly related to both the experience of discrimination and their depression and anxiety levels. Supporting the social support deterioration model, the findings showed that more experiences of discrimination led to reduced peer support which in turn, increased the likelihood of being depressed and anxious. Peer support was also significant in partially mediating the discrimination-psychological distress relationship. Implications for social work practice with children from multicultural families are provided.
